YAVP - my second ever win :)

Ok I'm getting confused... is this the newer forum, because I saw some pretty recent posts in the other one :( I'll post my thread here, too, because I'm so god damned happy.

Hey, I just got my second win ever! And my first ever caster win!

... and it's a 15-rune HeFe of Ashenzari which only came close to dying thee or four times, because I went full on derp mode, despite being my first ever character to do any of the following:

- cast Firestorm (actually my second ever, the first time I got firestorm castable at all was 2 days ago :) )
- cast Tornado
- cast Necromutation
- cast Controlled blink
- visit any of the following : Tomb, Pan, Hells
- get any of the following runes : Pan, Hells, Tomb
- enter a ziggurat
- use a crystal ball of energy

Ashenzari is (was?) incredibly overpowered, is what I'm saying. It almost feels like cheating, but hey - second win! And I'd never be able to pull it off it weren't for good old Ash. Besides, in the post-endgame content he wasn't that good - just pretty incredible.

Still, though. I had Firestorm castable before my first rune, and Tornado before my second. The branches I did at lvls 20-26 felt the cheesiest, because by that point Ashenzari was completely overpowered. I stopped pretending I was playing Crawl when I was killing elves at Elf:1 by Tornado-ing the flame clouds from Fire Storm around. Transfer knowledge is incredible and if I were a better player I could've pulled off a lot more skills at 27 a lot earlier. Still. Oh, and Tornado can damage enemies through walls, while Scrying lets you see through walls. I killed two of the hell lords that way, because I was so afraid of facing them directly. I fought the rest face to face, though, it was more fun :)

All in all I found the Hells to be the most dangerous, because of the hell effects, which incidentally resulted in me learning the abyss by heart (figuratively speaking). I got abyssed so many times it was mind-numbing. I also had about 60 rotten HP at some point because of a lack of rMut and staying in Lich form all the time.

When I entered the Ziggurat I thought I'd done something wrong, though :) It was a 3k fee one, I skipped one earlier which cost 7k and since the first 10 floors were very tiny and filled with insignificant enemies I thought the size and loot was dependent on the price... oh how wrong I just was. No angel levels, though, thank god - I rolled full lich because of the novelty.

I found Tornado to be much better and easier to use than Fire Storm, so I stuck to it most of the time. I had no mutation resistance till the very end, and rElec till my last rune, I think. I also assumed I'd missed one of the pan lords, because I wasn't paying attention and I kept hitting normal pan levels which I just started skipping at some point, but thankfully I found Mnoleg and his league of mutating creeps. Frankly, by that point I was actually getting bored... And thus I grabbed my favourite items from my stash and ascended.

I'm glad I won, but it feels a bit...cheaty :( Still, it was great fun, and I got to see the post-endgame content without wizard mode or save scumming! So I guess I can take a break from Crawling for a day or two, at last.

Oh, here's the dump, btw :

Welcome to the Tavern! Yes, this is the new forum. All the threads that were created on the other forum before Monday are locked. The rest will be locked soon. :)

Hey, I just got my second win ever! And my first ever caster win!

Congratulations! Ashenzari is indeed overpowered. I managed to create a pretty powerful troll caster, despite trolls having the worst aptitudes in the game. Ash is probably more cheesy than Nemelex, which is surprising.

Thanks for your post and your feedback on Ashenzari. if you want to elaborate, I've created a thread in the design section to talk about Ash.

Re: YAVP - my second ever win :)

I really don't get how to milk Ash for ridiculous skill training like everyone seems to be doing :(
I'm playing a HEWz of Ash atm, and my skills are maybe just a little bit ahead of what they would usually be. I only had 2 bound items until around the time I got the first 2 runes (horrible loot thoughout the early game save for a robe of resistance, and not enough remove curse scrolls to go ahead and curse the crap gear anyway).
Now I'm about to clear Vaults: 8 and only have 25% exp bonus, and its effect is barely noticeable. Certainly nothing like having multiple >20 lvl skills by the late mid-game like some people are reporting. Atm I'm training necromancy to get necromutation castable, but I doubt I'll get it before I run out of places to visit that don't actually require necromutation to begin with
I can't imagine being able to cast two lvl 9 spells of two different elements that early (or at all, really) even if I had the full 40% bonus from the start.
I also don't see how transferring skills is that powerful unless one is switching builds mid-game: usually the skills you have trained are the ones you need, except for those inevitable couple levels in stabbing or similar. Did you train unneeded skills you had good aptitude with to transfer the xp to bad aptitude ones (e.g. short blades -> necromancy).
Is it all down to being lucky with early loot that's worth cursing (and enough scrolls to do so and still be able to switch later)?

Teach how to cheat with Ash :(

Re: YAVP - my second ever win :)

There was a bug which made all skill training very cheap if you started and then cancelled a reskill; it was fixed in this recent commit.

Perhaps the XP boost doesn't even need to be completely removed and it was just that bug causing people to get absurd skill levels.

As marvinPA said, this might be because of a nasty bug I fixed yesterday. It's most spectacular effect was when you cancelled a reskill after selecting the source skill which made skill training much cheaper. Even after a regular reskill, I think there was a little discount, but I'm not sure if it was really significant. Anyway, it's gone now.

asdu wrote:Did you train unneeded skills you had good aptitude with to transfer the xp to bad aptitude ones (e.g. short blades -> necromancy).

That wouldn't change anything. Reskilling transfer skill points, not skill levels. If you reskill from a good aptitude skill, less points are transferred. If you transfer to a bad aptitude one, less skill levels are gained. You can't abuse the system that way.

Yeah, I noticed the bug too, I even should have mentioned it in my first post? I'm sorry if I missed it, I was really tired when I wrote it. Apart from that, well, Ash should still be pretty powerful even without this bug, because getting extra experience and being able to transfer it to a skill you don't even use that often is still a great boost. I'd suggest capping the additional exp at 25%, but I know nothing about game balancing, so I'll just shut up now :) Besides, you guys seem to be doing rather great with the game so keep that stuff up, there are people depending on you for their fix (including me)!

The only thing I noticed that could be addressed at some point is the proportion between curse x skills. Because, Ash, my old friend, I don't really need those seventy-five curse weapon skills, but I could do with something to curse my awesome randart boots I've been using for six hours now and don't really plan to replace, dontcha think?

Oh, and just for kicks, I found my dump from right after I got my first rune. It says 8/8 lair but I got the undead ending and had no rNegative, so I left. Here, bask in my eternal glory :)
