Autoexploring while Berserk

Why can't I autoexplore while berserk?

I've killed everything around me.
I have prayed to Trog on the appropriate corpses (if necessary).
I've picked up what I want to pick up.
What's the next thing I do?
Explore.

But I can't auto-explore, I have to do it manually for the, maybe 10-15 walking spaces berserk continues for.

I understand thematically that there is a reason for this, but logically there should be no restriction.

What's the history behind this decision?

Re: Autoexploring while Berserk

Autoexploring while berserk would get you killed. You can be sure to end up slow and exhausted in front of a pack of monsters. So the feature was added as a safety. Rest before exploring.

I disagree. Logically, when only thoughts in your head are:
"KILL! KILL!FUCAAAAAAAGHHKILLLLKILL!! GRRRAAAAAGHH!!!KIIIIIIILLL!"
usually you don't want to go look for items and stairs and what not. Most likely you gonna bash corpses, floor and walls in enraged madness.

Re: Autoexploring while Berserk

Could the game have a flag added to turn this feature off?

I unwisely continue to look for kills to faint in front of while berserk.

Re: Autoexploring while Berserk

It was a hacky fix to the bug where autoexploring while berserk let you stay berserk the whole time you explored, I think.

For me, I care not that I might be left destitute encountering several enemies; when I am still in full rage, my goal is to find new enemies and to me the easiest way to do that when I don't know any enemies are nearby is to hit the auto-search.

If what Marv says is true, then maybe this is an unintentional side-effect and possibly should be rectified. For those who don't want to explore while raging, you can always hit 5.

Can anyone confirm Marv's statement? Anyone vehemently opposed to me putting in a fix request after confirmation?

Re: Autoexploring while Berserk OR Starving

Also, why can't I autoexplore while STARVING?

I mean, let's say I'm Starving and I don't have any food.
I've been stopped by autoexplore to tell me I'm starving.
I can't autoexplore, even though it is just as effective as click-exploring to find some food.

I think autoexplore should have a yes/no check flag when you try to autoexplore while berserk or starving.

Click Autoexplore while Starving
You are starving and may die if you do not eat, are you sure you want to autoexplore? [Y]es, [N]o

Click Autoexplore while Berserk
You are berserk and may faint from exhaustion, are you sure you want to autoexplore? [Y]es, [N]o

Granted, whatever workaround the no-auto-explore-while-berserk patch problem fixed needs to be fixed normally within the code before this can happen.

It's actually not. At all.

Why not? It opens up empty spaces (ok, it's "grab the nearest dark space and go in that direction and then reverse instead of searching for secret doors") to spot food, which is exactly what I'd be doing. Heck, I'd jump down a level and hit it up.

If my character has no food or potions on him, and my character has no stash of food yet built, and my character is starving, my immediate inclination is to start searching empty squares for food (or make a mad dash to the hive if I know where it is) because that would be the only source of food to find.

We are not going to waste our time coding annoying prompts to which only the most reckless players would answer yes. If you want to explore when berserk, do it manually. It's only a handful of turns.

Yeah, berserk ends pretty quickly esp. it seems if you are not hitting anything.

I'm annoyed that it's often a good idea to berserk and then flee to the nearest staircase. It'd be fun if all monsters turned into sirens when you berserked.

Flavour-wise, this is truly a brilliant idea!
Would probably need some balancing, though.

This could definitely really change how berserking is balanced, and would certainly weaken it a lot. On the other hand, going into a murderous, foaming-at-the-mouth-rage and then immediately turning tail and running away really seems goofy and immersion breaking. "I want nothing more than to kill and rend, so I'm going to show that by playing the coward and running for it..."

Perhaps a limited range on the "fixated/siren" affect, so it only applied for creatures closer than 4 squares away or so. In other words, flavor-wise, closer than a certain distance, and you can't help but either hold your ground or charge them, but further away than that, and you're able to master yourself enough to retreat.

This also might warrant the return of the 200% (instead of the current 150%) health increase when berserking, or some other benefit. However you want to balance it, though, berserking *really* shouldn't be usable for retreating in most (all?) situations, in my opinion.

Re: Autoexploring while Berserk

When me and my friend play Borderlands, he uses a Brick character, so oftentimes there'll be funny moments of him in berserker rage mode after killing some guys, and he's just going around picking up ammo and money and other things while screaming his head off. I just imagine he's -really- excited about that $200 and some shotgun ammo he found.
