I'm well set up but unsure where to go next. Given that my aim is to get my first rune, and anything else is a bonus, should I tackle the swamp (found)? Or should I try to complete the Lair, or find the Orc Mines first? I have poison resistance and a flaming weapon (god gift), but no electrical resistance yet, unless it's in the unidentified potions.

Skills - I've been concentrating on axes and armour almost exclusively since I got reasonable unarmed, throwing and fighting. Should I broaden that from here?

This and any other advice gratefully received!

Re: Help - where next? (MiGl)

First off, if you're using a weapon, unarmed combat does not help you in any way. It doesn't improve your headbutts or auxiliary attacks. For future characters, don't train it.

You should be using that chopping battleaxe at all times, unless facing a hydra. It's significantly better than your flaming randart axe.

Skill training: I'd back off axes until for a bit. More skill won't help much until you get an exec axe. Get traps+doors to 5, invo to 8, then raise armour and fighting some more. Swap to plate mail when you can - splint isn't very good.

General game order that can be used by nearly every character: dungeon to lair -> lair 1-8 -> orc -> d to vaults -> v 1-7 -> crypt -> d to 27 -> get 3 runes/do elf -> zot

Re: (CiP) Help - where next? (MiGl)

I'd say finish lair (though stay out of the end vault if you're not sure you can handle it), then orc. Ranged might be nice for this character, just remember that with 2.6 in any ranged skill you start getting ammo gifts. I'm also a bit surprised; I thought most Minotaurs went for dodging instead of armor due to the headbutt retaliation?

Re: Help - where next? (MiGl)

Switch to battleaxes immediately and your damage output will jump dramatically.

Unarmed Combat is a waste unless you're going to fight without weapons. It doesn't help your headbutts.

Electrical resistance is very rarely needed. Keep identifying your potions and checking out randart armour and weapons, but don't stress over it unless you actually run into Nikola or something.

Finish off Lair. Keep in mind that Lair:8 will be harder than the previous 7 levels, and be prepared to save it for later. Orc is usually a good place to go next, but can be difficult compared to Lair. You should be able to pick up a plate mail there, and that will be a better option for you than splint. If Orc starts kicking your ass, go back to the main dungeon for a while and keep doing that until it starts getting hard, then try O again.

Regarding armour / dodging, you need a good armour skill to negate the EV penalties of heavy armor so that you can actually dodge attacks and retaliate.

Ah - I thought UC was helping my headbuts! Okay.

I have some nice plate but the splint is my source of rPoison.

Actually, I've had trouble choosing! I got a god gift axe pf venom (and more) too. Is chopping the best of all the ones in the char dump?

Re: (CiP) Help - where next? (MiGl)

Yes, the chopping battleaxe is your best by far. It's enchanted enough that you probably won't find something better until Oka drops a freeze/flame exec axe. Venom is decent in the early game, but why poison dudes when you can just chop their heads off?

rPois, like rElec, tends to be overvalued. Even places like Snake and Spider are perfectly doable without it. You can keep it if you want, but personally I would never use rPois splint over even vanilla plate.

Re: (CiP) Help - where next? (MiGl)

If you have a nice plate, you should really use it instead of the splint mail. The latter is a very bad type of armour while the former is very good. Furthermore, like eeviac said rpois is high overestimated - outside Snake and Spider is almost useless, as long as you have at least 1 healing pot in the inventory.

Oh, even if you wear a plate mail, as Mi you can train both armor and dodging, as long as you put all your bonus stat point in dex. In that way a 3-runes game MiGl can reach something like 30 ac/30ev, which is awesome.

Drop that pot of cure mut in your stash: it's very valuable and very rare. Drop that ring of sustenance too, it's almost useless and it's better to use any other good ring (if you have). Drop the -1 gloves too, they are useless too and maybe Oka will be generous and gift you some nice randart.
screw it I hate this character I'm gonna go melee Gastronok

-1 gloves (and hats, boots and cloaks) are only mostly useless. They still help mitigate acid splash damage. That said, they also can become a target for curses which can prevent you from swapping your rings.

Re: (CiP) Help - where next? (MiGl)

The -1 gloves are giving about +0.5 AC to the character in the original post (+1 base, +~0.5 from armour skill, -1 from enchantment)--I am not sure how rounding works in the armour calculations. Wearing them is better than not wearing them, assuming the character has no other gloves available.

I had no idea Armour skill affected non-body slot equipment.

Wearing them is better than not wearing them, assuming the character has no other gloves available.

I agree that is better, for a normal character to, wear them - just for reference, you need 17 armor skill to get a +1 ac with them.
However I've suggested the contrary because for a follower of Oka is better to not wear them, to increase the chance he will gift something (usually awful :D ) to cover the empty slot - or has this mechanic been removed?

Isn't this supposed to be 22?

This mechanic never existed. Acquirement weightings use the stash tracker, not what you currently have equipped.

I've checked in wiz-mode, with 17 skill you gain +1 AC.

I wonder where I've read this bad information, I'm pretty sure I haven't invented it - oh anyway, sorry for the bad advice, there's no need to take off that gloves! (unless you're scared by death curses :D)

Wearing gloves gloves without AC bonus or other effects can kill you if they get cursed and you need to swap rings. Okay, it's rare, but it happens. (Of course it can kill you even if the gloves are nice, but then you have an excuse for wearing them. ;) )

If you try this wearing only the gloves, you will see that you need 22. This is because the bonus of sklev/22 is not multiplied for each piece of armour individually; actually, the base AC of each item is added together first, and I guess the rounding makes it complicated.

However it is safe to assume that they will not only be wearing gloves.
What made you happy today?

Ouch, I thought skill's bonus was calculated on every single piece of armour and not on the total - you're right, to get +1 AC with only gloves 22 points are necessary  Well, it seems today I can only contribute to badforum entries :D
