Elms?

I was reading another thread the other day when i stumbled upon a link to the Elm race
http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=Elm
I wanted to give this race a go just for the heck of it and I´ve tried a few versions between 0.1.0 - 0.3.x but I cannot seem to find in which version the race is available. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Re: Elms?

I'm not sure but one line in the wiki implies they were in .1.9, and it specifically states they were removed in .2.0

Re: Elms?

Yeah, I tried but couldn´t seem to find a 0.1.9 version, only up to 0.1.7 then 0.2.0+. But the Elm race was in none of those. Maybe they were never officially released?

I dunno, I read the page more carefully and it seems like a bunch of nonsense; a joke page. It talks about all these mutations but don't actually specify anything. 6 amulets?? 180 xp apt? tame plants spell? Human Elms? Maybe Elms never existed in the first place.

Oh goodie! Also I would suggest being skeptical of the wiki and anything it says.

The last time I checked, the last person to edit that page is an active developer...

I am probably one of the few people still around to have played an elm (crawl was a wackier game back then), and I am sorry to say I can't remember exactly which version that was.

Re: Elms?

You should query the knowledge bots before putting this off as a joke. Here for instance is proof of the race's existence:

  Code:
<Sequell> 1095. Stabwound the Annihilator (L27 ElCj), worshipper of Vehumet, escaped with the Orb and 4 runes on 2007-08-03, with 1258768 points after 127062 turns and 9:47:18.

Re: Elms?

I'd figured the bots wouldn't work with CAO down.

6 amulets? Really?

Re: Elms?

I made a similar proposal in my first posts here. I'm glad to see that even the "many amulets" idea was considered before me... despite people disagreed.

You can see my tile proposal in my avatar.

In any case, a unified and improved race of Elm or tree humanoid is worth to see: another slow race as Nagas are, but in this case they have to fight as a tank or as a tower. The discussion ended tossing ideas about nutrition: I proposed they like to drink water rather than to eat food, but the availability of water potions or fountains is not as granted as food.

Recently I though about the nutrition problem. I propose that water, fountains or any potion may equal to a food ration, and fruits are also consumables because they have water as well. Bread is too much dry and meat is not acceptable. The hungry clock can be modulated also with the level of metabolism and if necessary, include a small % of nutrition while resting, higher if you are surrounded by mist, clouds or fog.

Not sure how easy could be, because a slow and extremely unstealthy race is going to attract many of the scum at each floor, having to fight more than average races.

If you stay in the same place without moving for a long period, your "roots" can bring up water and feed you. I think this would encourage scumming though...

Re: Elms?

I did dl and try all versions available from 0.1 to 0.8 according to this site
http://sourceforge.net/projects/crawl-r ... ne%20Soup/
and Elms were in none of those. But i´m not sure that´s the full list since there´s no .1.9 (or even .1.8).
Maybe this was Linseys DC version 0.1.9 (before Stone soup)? Anyway, i like to give this race a go if anyone ever finds it.

Re: Elms?

Ok, another thread inspired me to update;
I did find the version of Linley's Crawl ("Henzell wrote: An old race in 0.2" was a giveaway that i somehow missed the first time, thx mageykun) in which its still a playable race at http://www.dungeoncrawl.org/
and more exactly here ftp://ftp.dungeoncrawl.org/final/ (version 0.1.1 and probably also version 0.1.0.3 & 0.1.0.4) but i have no idea what to do with those extracted files. There´s a bunch of Cpp files & H-files and ofc txt files (in part confirming its written in DoS and some bio of Henzell) and one Mak file.

So I´m guessing the Mak file is the equivalent of today's exe files (on PC) and i have been using other Programs to try and open the Mak file without any success.
Someone smarter than me might know how to (or is it the wrong file i´m trying to open)?

Heh, did you try opening it with a text editor? It's a makefile, which is the same thing crawl uses to build the program today. Here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Make_(software)

You should try downloading later versions like 2.3, as they seem to have dos .exes in them.

Oh nice, I've been wondering what the deal was with these guys for years now. I've chopped the incoherent junk out of the Wiki article and put up something that should provide historical data without bogging the reader down with gibberish. Thanks!

I would be very surprised if this were an Elm and not an Elf.
