NaTm^Chei to squishy

I'm trying a naga transmuter of chei and now in early lair I'm finding that in the few turns before my enemies are torn to shreds, they do an uncomfortably large amount of damage. How do I reliably increase my resilience?

Would The Shining One be better?

No; poison spit and spider form are both very good. A multitude other gods are good, the best are Okawaru and Makhleb in my opinion. If you prefer Elyvilon, Fedhas, Nemelex Xobeh or Yredelemnul though, these are all viable choices.

Get a load of dodging to reduce their chances of actually getting those few hits in.

Normally that's not really that easy, but +15 Dex at least helps.

I'd suggest you go malkheb and train up stealth to 5 or 6 in the early game along with your other stuff so you can choose your fights better. Spiderform can help you run away, but sometimes its better to just sneak around.

Or with Okawaru, get +5 to Dodging—and to every other combat skill—whenever you want, and still be able to use the Haste spell/potion/wand, the most overpowered effect in the game.

Re: NaTm^Chei to squishy

I generally solved the problem on my nagas of chei by going heavy armor and shields - both of which are terrible for spellcasting. I focused much more on physical skills first, and then only after lair, did I start raising armor/shield enough to negate penalties and start training magic after that. Many people around here consider that stupid but I really liked the progression...of course most of them just hate chei...I wrote a guide on my style which is found here: http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?t ...
