Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

They both have very situational uses for which other things can fill in quite well. You need rElec twice:
1) Nikola
2) Electric golems, maybe black draconians/storm dragons

In case 1, chug a pot of resist. In case 2, chug a pot of resist or cast insulation or swap a jewel in, et cetera.

You need sInv a few times:
1) ghost moths
2) more ghost moths
and it can be a convenience against things like unseen horrors, ancient liches, etc.

They're two of the most overrated things to have, right up there with rPois and rN.

If by overrated you mean situational then every resist is overrated. Everything is overrated. Crawl is precisely a situational game. Having rPois rElec rInvis on default is choice.

So, in a normal 3 runer you plan to meet only 2 monsters combined you want to have rElec for? Because that IS what you wrote. And rElec artifacts are not quaranteed. If you are looking to wear GDA, like the the guy with the nice armor, you probably aren't doing casting so much (of course it's possible).

Let's look at the broader perspective: rF is also very situational: you only really need it against a few uniques, dragons, some draconians, gold dragons, lichs, fire giants, hell knights and OOFs (you did not mention deep elves, so I don't have to either). Of these, gold dragons and hell knights are very rare, uniques you can usually skip and lichs don't necessary even have fire bolt IIRC, depending on spellset. Against draconians you can use invisibility etc...

rCold is even more situational than fire. rPois and rN have already been proven useless by the great minds of these forums. Spells are really situational too. Actually they are worse, because they are useless: I have won games without them and even cleared a whole 27 levels of a ziggurat without them. You really only need spells if you have low (max) HP, so kind of situational. This also apllies to haste: I have done a spelless 15 runer without berserk or haste while killing all the lords and uniques encountered.

My point: I'm sure zot can be cleared with just rF+ without any other resistances. Maybe you don't even need that. However, telling to AN AVERAGE crawl player that this and this resistance is not useful, as it has happened a lot in these forums, is usually not sound advice. Possible and probable are two different things and EVEN MORE SO for not-so-good-players.

GDA has 12 base AC. (CPA has 14)

If you find +11 GDA with rElec and see invisible you will not want to waste 12 enchant armour scrolls on a regular +0 GDA to get an extra point of AC (or 13 scrolls on a gold dragon hide). CPA is great alrite.

It's reverse stealth.

Normally, stealth works by moving quietly so things don't notice you.

Bagpipe stealth works by producing an overwhelming tsunami of unwanted, distracting, and painful noise that makes it much harder for monsters to pay attention to you in particular. It's like communications jamming. Only instead of filling the air with incoherent EM, you're doing it with bagpipes.

Those sleeping monsters you see? They're actually huddled up, hands/paws/tentacles over ears, desperately trying to block out that infernal sound. Wandering monsters are pacing around in distress, too distracted by that infernal noise to notice the adventurer sneaking up on them and killing them.

I just found this ring with my DrBe, easily the best I've ever found:

  Code:
 n - the ring "Zeyxonne" (left hand) {MR Str+3 Dam+5 SInv}
   (You found it on level 8 of the Dungeon)

   [ring of protection from magic]

   It affects your strength (+3).
   It affects your damage-dealing abilities (+5).
   It enhances your eyesight.

Hey guys, I think my Ogre just found a reason to do the crypt next.

  Code:
c - the +7,+7 great mace "Undeadhunter" {god gift, rN+}
   (Trog gifted it to you on level 7 of the Vaults)

   It protects you from negative energy.

   This weapon is imbued with magic that can counter and disrupt the magic
   holding undead together, inflicting great damage.

Henzell wrote: A +7, +7 "great steel mace" (base type great mace) with rN+. Has its own effect similar to the old disruption brand instead of holy wrath: a 2/3 chance of up to quadruple damage, with an average of 2.5x damage, but only against undead.

I dunno, a +7/+7 great mace regardless of special properties would do a number on most demons. (Unless you're saying one of its properties is that it literally does no damage to demons.)

J - the +23 crystal plate armour of Analysis (worn) {god gift, Str+3 Dex+2}
(Okawaru gifted it to you on level 7 of the Lair of Beasts)

It affects your strength (+3).
It affects your dexterity (+2).

Not only is it incredibly overpowered, but the strength bonus facilitated its immediate use (rather than a YASD before sufficient level-ups in strength).

Well, here is my contribution to the best armour in the game discussion. I just found it yesterday via a scroll of Acquirement.

the +22 crystal plate armour of Sionem {rElec rPois rN+ Curse}
(You acquired it on level 10 of a ziggurat)

It insulates you from electricity.
It protects you from poison.
It protects you from negative energy.
It may recurse itself. (like i would ever take it off!)

I assume the parts where he hasn't trained evocations, already can cast blink and flight, is hopefully killing everything from afar to protect his fragile, crystalline hps and doesn't therefore have much chance to appreciate regen, and he really wants to wear a =fire or two.

Well, yeah, blink and lev are situational at best, but regen is very very good for absolutely anyone that can use it (especially fragile dudes), and rC offsets rings of fire nicely.
