User ranks

Hey all,

I want to use custom ranks on this board. So far I've just created one, "Dungeon Dipper", for anyone with more than one post, but it could also be something like "Novice", "Tourist", or "Wanderer"

Other ideas for ranks, or a theme for the ranks are welcome. Some more brainstorming from me:

Barfly
Aspirant
Loremaster
Ascendant
Temple Guardian
Spelunker
Crawler
Lair Lurker, Lair Tamer
Beekeeper
Vault Keymaster
Zot Lord
Initiate
Accolyte
Pandemonic
Mine Sweeper

Also, there could be special titles for Devs, because it can be helpful to know if the person who's talking knows something about the source code or is just repeating something they read on CrawlWiki.

Not only devs know the source code.

Re: User ranks

Good point.

I'd like to (if others agree) give special ranks to those who have deep knowledge of the game, whether they are devs or not. I don't know who all those people are though - I'll take nominations. Some names I recognize by now as either devs or very involved reporters from Mantis.

Very knowledgeable reporters could be "Rune Reader". Devs and vault designers could be "Dungeon Architect" or even "Dungeon Master".

You'll see I gave myself the rank of "Barkeep".

In terms of ranks based on posting, I see different possible themes:
- roles of people in a tavern, e.g. the stranger, the bard, the bouncer, the barfly, the regular, the elder,
- levels of progression in the game - tied to different depths in the dungeon.
The earliest ones would be something like:
Temple Trespasser
Mine Sweeper
Bee Tamer
etc.
- Based on monsters / uniques - e.g. Rat Bait, Hydra Happy Meal, Sigmund's Snack, Ogre Hors d'oeurve,

I like that last one because it plays on the many ways this game likes to kill you.

Temple Tourist 5
Mine Marauder 15
Hive Hopper 30
Lair Lounger 50
Swamp Surfer 75
Pit Partier 100
Vault Vamp 150
Crypt Cruiser 250
Tomb Trespasser 500
Zot Zoomer 1000

Re: User ranks

You could just use "Zot! Zot! Zot!"

Not only do you hear it in the game, but it's the end of the UC Irvine Anteater cheer...

"Give 'em the tongue! Give 'em the tongue! Zot! Zot! Zot!"
  Code:
Jory screams, "No, no!" before exploding into a cloud of blood!

Agreed!

Where would you prefer to surf? in Swamp or Shoals? :D

Re: User ranks

Not all the devs (me for example) know the source all that well either! A "dev badge" is probably a good idea nonetheless.

edit: Yeah, that's a good postcount theme. Swamp Surfer, Shoals Sunbather?

Re: User ranks

I forgot about Shoals - I rarely survive that far and I've been playing 0.4.5 until recently.

I also don't have Dwarven / Elven Halls, or Pandemonium, Abyss, or any branches of Hell. I think it will be a long time until anyone gets to 1000 (actually, I was at 240 on the other board already, but that's just sick me)

The order is hard to judge too - Elven Halls are tougher than Orcish Mines by a long shot.

But let's see:

Abyssal Adventurer
Pan Prancer
Shoal Surfer
Swamp Stomper

For Devs: Dungeon Designer? Rune Reader?

Re: User ranks

For devs I suggest dungeon demiurge,

Demiurge the deity responsible for the fashion of the physical universe and the physical aspect of humanity in some belief systems

Orb Operator? ;)
... and forgive us our YASDs,
As we forgive our developers,
And lead us not into the Abyss,
But deliver us from Sigmund,
For Thine is the Roguelike,
the Orb and the Victory,
now and forever.
