I played through all early game and most of mid game with my hexes+throwing and almost zero meleeing. The arcane marksman spellbook is very strong and a lot of fun -- definitely takes more micromanagement/"work" than any other character I can think of, though. Inner Flame is incredible. I feel like the biggest thing holding me back from pursuing throwing as my main DPS/physical attack is that I simply can't hold more than a couple of large rocks, and there have been very very few javelins this game (I do have the shoals though).

I think I'm going into the shoals next to see how many javelins I pick up -- if I get a ton of steel javs I will probably abort this melee'ing nonsense and max out throwing haha.

Aside from that I had an awesome Sif Muna temple-thing randomly on dungeon level 13 or so. I have access to pretty much every spell I could possibly want (except animate dead.. rofl. controlled blink is in a shop as well). I have statue form in a book, but zero transmutation/earth skill. I also have Silence in a book but too few spell levels atm. Any thoughts on what direction I should head skill-wise?

How bad is ashenzari's wrath btw? I kind of want to swap to Jiyva:P

Finally, there is a treasure trove which wants a +3+7 ring of slaying, and there is one in a shop for 2.5-3.4k gold, should I go for that?

don't leave ashenzari, you'll effectively lose 6-8 points in each of your magic skills. why do you want jiyva anyway?

I think that's too much money to get into a trove, but the slaying ring might be good to buy and keep in the "permanent" slot over magical power.
amulet of faith doesn't seem very good with ashenzari.
flight + ring of shadows + ash clarity should make shoals pretty easy if you're careful.
I assume you aren't always carrying all that stuff, it's just for the dump, right?

I tend to carry too much stuff in order to try and be more prepared for various situations. I know this hurts my rock carrying potential.. and its a pain in the ass when collecting loot. Also the only other amulet in the game is gourmand lol.

Thing is I've ended up basically NEEDING practically every ring I'm carrying at some point in order to avoid dying throughout the game. Also it is a little more expensive to run back and forth to the stash as an ogre (fast metabolism). Still, Ogre handicap or bad play, dunno. What do you think I could trim from my inventory?

Jiyva would give me perfect or near perfect conservation and I could dive in on my inner flame bombs with impunity. Metabolic Englaciation wouldn't annihilate my potions. I'd become some kind of Fire Walking Ogre God of Death. Right now, I have to drop my scrolls in order to do so. Jiyva would also let me tune my resistances better since I would have to be bound in worship to the Cursed One. Right now, I have a big problem with resistances going forward. In choosing Jiyva my ogre could specialize into a pure Hexer/Charmer, which seems like a pretty unique and fun type of character, or I could continue going down the route of "awesome support skills while I smash the hell out of things".

Also cure bad mutations >< There are currently no cure mutation pots in the game (Used one), and I already have blurry vision. Christ Ashenzari's wrath is harsh.. AND I just use a potion of experience crap CRAP CRAP!@!!


PS. check out this guy's proposal (Everyone) viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3901 , would be a v nice addition to further increase depth 'n variety.

Off the top of my head, the darts and the sling bullets. That means the sling can go too. I'd drop the axe as well - why are you even carrying it at all? The spell books can be stashed somewhere too, although I'd probably learn regen first.

Derp, the axe wasn't supposed to be in my inventory, no idea how I even picked it up haha. Good point about T&D; I had forgotten Ash gives bonuses to that.

Well I got bored of ashenzari so I just converted to Jiyva. Those couple of T&D points will come in handy!

I'd really really like to know how the amulet of faith affects Ashenzari's penance. For other gods, it makes it go by faster because they punish more often, but Ash doesn't work that way. Any clue?

BTW I almost got one shotted from 200 hp by an Azure Jelly. I had forgotten to swap back in my ring of cold. Took me to 15 hp.. Was a terrible error that turned into a horrendous situation. Thankfully, blurry vision didn't stop my scroll...

don't carry scrolls without use in combat (identify, Enchant weapon/armour, *curse*, shouldn't be carried, as you just risk them getting burned for no reason
you don't need ring of sustain abilities, probably not sustenance (but maybe for stash runs), most of the wands (just need digging/disint depending on where you are), the war axe, one or both staves, steel darts, 4 of your bread, maybe the deck (when you need alchemist, you won't want to swap to it, and you have no evocations), and one or both spellbooks
identify your ring, if you get spare uses check number of charges on teleportation wand - having that fail mid-combat is pretty bad.
I'm not sure about the sling & bullets since slings skill is so low and you have other things to train (you can work on throwing, soon there should be more large rocks than you'll ever need if not already)
blurry 1 is a bit annoying but should be liveable - keep the wand of teleportation I guess.

Also, needles of sickness, one of your two wands of digging, your enchant scrolls, the ring of fire resistance and that deck. I know you're low on heal wounds potions, but carting around a deck on the off chance you might wind up in a situation where you'd want to evoke a deck without any evocation skill is a little silly. You could switch your amulet to gourmand and walk around engorged enough to cast regeneration every time you get hurt.

Thanks for the convo so far guys. I'm just having too much fun with this character lol. I decided that I would beat crawl this month and take a break from it after that so I'm on a huge 2 day bender trying to get 'er done haha. 10+ runes and dying or escaping with the Orb are my personal criteria for winning. So..


I cleaned up my inventory a lot (well right this second it is full-up because I'm exploring the vaults)

I THINK I'm almost done with ashenzari wrath. My plan to become a fire walking ogre of godliness has worked perfectly so far! Plus Jiyva has given me a ton of great melee mutations just as I hoped. This is awesome.

Although Jiyva's stat shuffling turned out as bad as I expected :/ He put a bunch of my points into dex, which is balls out useless to me. I have 6EV without my+4EV ring on. This needs to be tweaked, why does an ogre with 1 level doging and 75% of his EXP in spell casting need 22 dexterity??

It is nearly time for me to give up my delightful +5AC mace (which is really helpful tbh). I have a scroll of vorpalize weapon. As far as I know my only choices are fire or freezing aura and I have to learn the spell just to cast it onto my weapon, which will be a GSC of course. Will fire or ice give me the most mileage in the post end game? Cold to help vs Demons, since I already have quite a bit of fire damage capability with inner flame? OR should I just blank vorpalize it to be a GSC Of Crushing, so I can smash Executioners more effectively? (A big threat to me I think)

I am loving this character. Lots of fun.

I recently tried 3 different dives on the Iron City, but by level 4 I always ended up getting nailed by tormentors (through rN+++) down to <110 HP and had to leave. So that was rough.. but I didn't have to use too many resources at least. That experience is telling me that I need to be scared crapless of the rest of the endgame aside from Zot until I get Statue Form castable (I am at like 90% fail w/o wizardry). So I've decided its time to go clear out Zot!

This is the gear I'm about to take off towards Zot with. It seems like the morningstar of anti magic is not really going to be worth it (for orbs of fire..), since I like to cast as well.. and the damage hit will be huge. Should I leave that behind?

Any other holes in my gear or things I should be particularly wary of? Do I need an amulet of clarity -- I am Incredibly Resistant to hostile enchantments after all.

Should I be concerned with Orbs of Fire or does my decent HP+maxable fire resists counter that; do I have any other holes? I'm going to annihilate those draconian punks! Jiyva is God! His ancient power will be spread through the lands and dimensions of this universe! No prideful youngster will escape the humbling presence of his mighty disciple!

I cleared Zot upto the approach to the orb chamber prettyyyy easily! When I was done, Statue Form was at a good casting %. I wasn't thinking toooooo hard, got excited, and I took a ton of gear to the Tomb.. so now I have like 10 cursed rings. A real shame that I'll have to use up so many remove curse scrolls, but I'll still have 3 or 4 when I'm done decursing.

But I cleared tomb rather easily over all, and it wasn't too much of a resource drain -- 2 or 3 rations, 1 royal jelly, 1 sustain abilities pot, 1 speed pot, 1 heal wounds, 3 teleport charges, 3 pots of curing and ~8 rotted hp(100% my fault :p). Definitely not a perfect run but I was starting to get semi-bored and rushed since its way, way past my bed time.

Pocketed the golden rune, pretty much no loot to speak of in the vaults though -- I guess my jellies ate it? :P
