Good computer games?

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

Good computer games?

I know this is a question regularly asked on forums and answers boards, but I'd like your opinion on this. Before you proceed on bombarding me with titles of random games, be aware that I've experienced quite a bit of what the market has to offer and I may already know the things you suggest. I'm looking for obscure gems on which you stumble upon only by chance. Maybe you know something that I don't know. Also, I don't care if the game is in Alpha or Beta or finished. Great indie games are appreciated most.

I'm looking for any sort of games that go by one or more of the following definitions:

Dungeon Crawlers - Whether it is a rogue-like (do mind that I've experienced quite a bit of those -JADE, ToME, Dungeons of Dredmore- though and DC:SS is far superior so I'm probably not gonna bother with any unless it's something I've missed) or a DIablo clone -Torchlight, Din's Curse, Sacred- or anything else that fits here. I'm mostly looking for this category at the moment since I'd like some mindless grinding for items. :P
Sims with RPG elements and vice versa - Preferably with no RTS elements.
Any sandbox games with or without RPG elements - Minecraft is an example but its on a plane of its own so other, lower awesomeness stuff will do too.

On a different note, does anybody know when Desktop Dungeons Beta is going to come out officially? I don't wanna see the unfinished product but the wait is killing me! I loved the Alpha. If you know of other games similar to DD feel free to suggest them, though I'm guessing that list would mostly be Minesweeper variants.

Virus Invasion -- It's a series of cruddy and boring platformers with a tiny cult following. I'm quite a fan. http://sandbox.yoyogames.com/users/blublub

Shape Quest -- An okay clone of An Untitled Story. http://sandbox.yoyogames.com/games/36642-shape-quest

Luna Game -- Suffers from a complete and utter lack of substance, but is guaranteed to scare you s**tless. http://www.lunagame.net

Magic Planet Snack -- A silly pseudo-shmup. Extremely fun and has nice music. http://lazercatz.com/snack.zip

These look like fun games but not really the genres I asked for. :P

Thanks, though.

Re: Good computer games?

Well if you want a dungeon crawler,
Verlies is just out, It,s a solo, shitty graphics, realtime and totally random (level, items...) dungeon crawler. Still young and need some polishing (and a linux version 8-) ), a demo will come soon, the last one has some nasty bugs. http://www.indiedb.com/games/verlies Around 6$
At the opposite you have Grimrock. Sqad based, realtime, predefined levels dungeon crawler with *really* nice graphics. But it still in development, should come out this year. http://www.grimrock.net/

As for Arpg, if you liked Titan Quest, you will get an infarction with Grim Dawn. Made with the same engine, by a part of the same team in a "victorian steampunk post-apocalyptic universe". Still in early stage of development, but they communicates a lot via their forum, and you can buy to support/have an access to the beta/alpha. http://www.grimdawn.com/index.php
And more unfinished, Kenshi. A Srpg (strategic role play game) in a feudal japan post apocalyptic world. It would take a lot of lines to explain this game, but you could go on their site, watch the videos and try the *demo*. http://www.lofigames.com/ It also remind me of Caravaneer http://www.kongregate.com/games/SugarFreeGames/caravaneer?acomplete=caravan.

For roguelikes, THE reference is http://www.roguetemple.com/ and http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php/Main_Page. But I do recommande to take a look to Cataclysm, a openworld post apocalyptic (again...) survival roguelike http://whalesdev.com/forums/index.php.

For Sandbox games, do I have to present Dwarf Fortress? http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/
Their it is also Terraria, I'm not a fan myself but it's a 2D minecraft with lot of items (and loot). Can be played online. http://www.terraria.org/
In development, Cube world. It look like Terraria in 3D with more RPG elements. http://wollay.blogspot.com/

Re: Good computer games?

First of all, thanks for your trouble linking all this stuff! You mention some games I don't know of at all.

Is Titan Quest really that good when it comes to Diablo-like games? I've heard of it but I've never found it on any game store before. When did it come out? Will it play on a crappy GPU? My laptop is having some issue with its dedicated gaming GPU crashing and I'm running it with the 64MB alternative one atm (it's for saving energy and non-graphic intense jobs). I can play Diablo 2 just fine, but that's a very old game anyway, so is Titan Quest high in GPU requirements? I can also play LOTRO with very low graphic settings if you need another reference as to what I can and cannot play.

When it comes to Diablo-clones; I've tried Loki, but honestly it didn't impress me at all. I also made the mistake of buying Sacred 2. Thoroughly disappointing. Torchlight gets very boring for some reason after u run the first few dungeons. I may have become too picky in my gaming preferences with age, I guess.

On Sandbox games, I play Minecraft which is fun but after the first couple of times I started a new game it got "same old, same old" and its saving grace is multiplayer with friends or not and of course it's for those people that like making pixel artwork and magnificent structures and such, a member of which I'm not. Terraria gets similarly boring very fast.

I know of the mammoth that is Dwarf Fortress but god damn it, you need like a week of playing to learn the basics. And I haven't found any tilesets that make the view easier. If you know of any, feel free to suggest. I've recently encountered a game called "Towns", which I tried out, you can find videos of it in youtube. It's in alpha atm. Dunno what to say. Seems to be a blend of Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress. Or you can say just Dwarf Fortress, I guess.

Anyway, Dwarf Fortress could "easily" become an insanely addictive game to a wider audience if it got changed but as far as I know, the creator is pretty old fashioned. Argh, maybe when I'm 50 years old it may be much more user-friendly. Hint: I'm 23 atm. Or shall it remain a realm of the elite only for ever? Who knows. :P

No one mentioned DoomRL so far - you may want to give this one a shot (from a BFG9000, preferably ;) ). Here is the download page.

This game stands out a lot but it's not what I'm currently looking for. Plus, ASCII graphics tire me. Altough they do spark one's imagination, allowing you to give monsters and items the "tile" you want in your head so that has always been argued. I get confused. There may be tiles for it out there, I guess. :D Call me superficial but these days I can't play games without a mouse. :P

Its an older game but Wizardry 8 is pretty fun. It is party based and allows up to 6 characters with 2 addition slots for NPCs. The classes are all pretty even and they all have benefits.

Re: Good computer games?

The Avernum series. Well, they're not specifically dungeon crawlers, but they have many short to long dungeons you'll be crawling through. I've completed 1-5 out of six (not including the remake of Avernum 1 they're doing) and it's an amazing set of games from Spiderweb Software. They're party based games with four members (though you can go with as few as one if you prefer) and, like Crawl, the various classes are all just starting packages. And that's assuming you don't pick the "Custom" class and design from the ground up right at the start. You can pick difficulty levels ranging from very easy and casual to frustratingly difficult and can change it on the fly if things are too easy or hard. Should note that Avernum 4-6 play a bit differently from 1-3 as they use a different engine and some mechanics are added, changed, or removed (battle skills, combat actions, and a traditional world map, respectively).

Spiderweb Software also does Geneforge in which you can create lots of monsters to do your bidding. I never really got into that series though, probably because I don't have the funds to go buy five games (despite how cheap they are compared to any big name offers). And there's also Avadon, which I don't own yet, but the demo was very fun. That one's a bit less flexible on the customization in that your class affects everything, but it still has multiple skill trees and such. It's also a 3-man party game with 4 possible classes, so you're forced to choose what class to do without.
The best strategy most frequently overlooked by new players for surviving: not starting a fight to begin with.

I've tried the Avernum series before. Didn't really get into it. Looks like Fallout a lot, and not only because of the isometric view. The way you customize stats and skills, feats and perks is quite similar. The main reason I didn't give it a chance is that nowadays I'm never in the mood of reading through walls of text in game, and I'm more interested in the game mechanics and character development. These aspects were pretty interesting but something about the game just didn't click for me.

Some additions to my top post:

I also like space-sim rpgs, where you can choose your path in the galaxy(-ies) and become a fearsome pirate, a guard of freight ships carrying valuable cargo, or a (mostly) pacifist planet explorer. Preferably while being able to customize your ship a lot, by buying parts from planets or even salvaging foreign technologies and stuff. Does anything like that exist? :) I recall a very old SEGA game that allowed you to land on planets and explore them with a land vehicle. The planet's atmospheric composition and temperatures could be scanned before landing and that gives you a hint about what climate zones you'll encounter, whether you can breathe without supporting equipment and If/what flaura and fauna lives in the planet.

Also, I said this on the first post, but I love games like Desktop Dungeons a lot (wish I knew of any other than it). I like the feeling of unlocking stuff that can be used (and abused :P ) later on in my next runs. I like how playing with a specific class unlocks the "better" version of it if you beat the level boss.

Since I think I'm giving you quite the informative wall of text, please try and suggest stuff that you think I'm gonna like. :P Thank you for your time replying in advance everyone!

Re: Good computer games?

The Geneforge series is very much worth those twenty bucks. The first two games are possibly the best RPGs I've played since Planescape: Torment. The rest are weaker, though the UI improves a great deal. 5 crashes to desktop quite a bit but the others are stable.

Space sim, Evochron http://www.starwraith.com/, X3 terran conflict http://www.egosoft.com/games/x3tc/info_fr.php, Shore of Azeron http://www.hazeron.com/, Wing commander Saga (a stand alone freespace 2 mod) http://www.wcsaga.com/news-archive-2012/there-is-indeed-a-light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel.html, Faster than light http://www.ftlgame.com/, Ascii sector http://www.asciisector.net/, prospector http://code.google.com/p/rlprospector/, Frontier Elite II http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frontier:_Elite_II, zigfrak http://zigfrak.com/, Spaz http://spacepiratesandzombies.com/, Aurora http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php and certainly lot more.

I won't describe them one by one, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I know Dungeon Desktop is fairly unique (an addictive), what come in mind for similar addiction is http://www.realmofthemadgod.com/. The binding of Isaac also have the unlocking mechanic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Binding_of_Isaac_(video_game).

Both games have nearly the same specs, so it should *work* but it should be lot better on a real GPU. I bought Titan Quest in a store (localized), then the golden Edition with the expansion Immortal Throne (box too), then I bought in online at nearly 5$ (10$ on impulse now http://www.impulsedriven.com/products/ESD-IMP-W118) and finally I bought it in the THQ mega pack. I do have no regrets and even bought Grim Dawn when I know it will be released only in a year or two. For me TQ:IM is three time better than Diablo 2 and a bit better than din's curse. The main problem with this game was the lack of communication and the fact that it's too slow paced. But now the word of mouth makes that this game sell more and more each year (was out in 2006), their is still people online. But the real advantage is the modding community, you can have better graphics, more enemies, more difficulties, a better pacing, more skills (underlord mod...) and even a new campaign (lilith)!

And anyway, with the Humble Bundle I gave you, you should be trying to unlock 100% of Super Meat Boy, not looking for other games. 8-)

Ah yes, thank you so much yet again! I bookmarked the link to the 4th bundle page which had my codes and stuff and when I visited it on a whim I noticed they added 5 more games from the 3rd bundle to it, which I could download! Pretty neat. :P

I can't decide which is worse, failing several characters in Crawl or the madness that is SMB? xD

I think the game you're thinking about is Star Control II, which can be found on the internet for free now, and legally too.

As for a suggestion in that genre, Escape Velocity Nova, full stop. It's about ten years old now, but will run on modern stuff just fine (or mostly fine in a few cases). It's a downloadable, $30 game, but you can try it for free for 30 days with a few restrictions on what you can do (for example, no capturing disabled ships, some stuff is unbuyable, can't complete major storylines, can't use plug-ins (aka mods), etc.) While there are six major storylines, you're pretty much free to do whatever before, in between their missions, and afterwards. Or ignore them completely. Whether you want to slaughter everyone, trade cargo peacefully, dominate the galaxy, or just be a galactic taxi service, you can do it. Lots of ship customization too, though there isn't any scavenging or crafting.

More importantly though, EVN has thousands of mods. A couple of the most notable are full, and legally free, ports of the previous games: Escape Velocity and Escape Velocity Override. So, you really get three games for one and, if you use Windows or Linux, it's the only way you can play EV and EVO without emulating OS9. Other mods do things from changing the starting amount of cash to completely replacing the in-game universe with an entirely new one, essentially giving you a whole new game to explore. Some those are quite good, though I might be a little biased since I made one of those total conversions (among a fair number of other mods).

On the downside for you, there is a fair bit of text. Each planet, outfit, ship, and bar has a description, though you can safely ignore them as they're largely flavor. The storylines in vanilla usually have some decent chunks of text, but they're well written (by a pair of novelists even). Those you'll want to pay more attention to so you know what's going on. But, you'll still spend the vast majority of the time trading, blasting, or whatever it is you want to do even if you read every bit of text that comes your way.

Space Rangers 2.

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/space_rangers_2_dominators

Though I'd suggest to wait for Space Rangers 2: Reboot (or buy it somewhere else if available).

Its bad side is translation quality (it was created in my country); its good side is everything else.

Don't you miss this gem, Druid, don't you miss it.

If you want to buy it, wait a bit, it is often 50% on gog and even 80% off on impulse.

So many suggestions! :D Gonna check on those links soon! :P
But for now I'm playing Prospector. :)
Thank you all for the help! Be sure to repost if you remember anything else you think would fit the bill for me.

By the way, I downloaded the demo of Dangerous High School Girls In Trouble yesterday. It's a sim/puzzle game with some rpg elements (there are stats which can be increased to give you an advantage in puzzles) and some inventory management. The game is so much fun. And even better, it can be played in short bursts over the course of a day. Though the demo was pretty short unfortunately. :P I recommend you to check it out.

Well, if you have a Transfactor Beacon (don't know how it is called in English version) and the nearby systems are not owned by Kelleroids, you can ask the blue tech bots to investigate the area. The factions love to fight with each other, after all: this might be the time to find the nearmost battle station and order a collaborative strike. =)
And the forces of Keller are usually the easiest to wipe out if you have at least two ships under your control -- or when you have one or two Multiresonators (they strike enemies adjacent to the hit victim, too!). But you need to live until them...

By the way, what is that Impulse? Does it have SR2:Reboot?

Re: Good computer games?

Space Pirates And Zombies - this is a space sim / RPG - haven't played it yet myself, but it's on sale on Steam for like $4 or so this weekend :)

Dominions 3 - not sure if turn based strategy is your thing, but it's got RPG elements, and you get to be a demigod, which is cool...

edit: oh, a roguelike that I've been playing recently is Sil - it's based on Angband, but heavily modified - no town, simplified stats, new skill system, new combat system...
The Ed draws near! What dost thou deaux?

Re: Good computer games?

Was just about to mention Space Pirates and Zombies. It's more shooter than sim. It's fun, but gets repetitive.

There's also Triangle Wizard, a roguelike shooter. http://trianglewizard.webs.com/ It also can get repetitive, but it's kind of a cool way to mix genres.

Ok, in my last game, everything is on ULTRA HARD! Even before I gain the first rank, the dominator busted the last battle station. The only way I can survive is with the fastest ship (because the last two system aren't adjacent). I also use missiles luncher, because it's the only way to gain XP, but now every rewards pay my ammo. :x But still I'm trying to liberate a system alone, I just need a free weekend to succeed. And on Impulse, wait a bit, it often have 50 to 80% off.

There is also a new game in space/rpg/str. http://www.cryptstone.com/star_prospector.htm If anyone try it, please give me a feedback, it seems interesting.

Also thank grimm, Transcendence look like good (but I don't have access to Windows now).

Ask in your closest game shops. 1C organized some sort of a sale.

I do have Transcedence in my computer since I found it out in a cd with a bunch of games from some magazine years ago. Very nice but it doesn't exactly deliver what I want. It does get close though.

Yes it should. And even if you get lag, most part of the game is turn based.

Re: Good computer games?

Two radically different suggestions I enjoy the most aside from the RTS genre and roguelikes:

- Revenge of the Titans from Puppygames. A real-time tower-defense 2D game based on stopping hordes of gargantuan retro-style aliens by deploying cool towers and hi tech buildings.
- Penumbra trilogy and Amnesia (not played yet) from Frictional Games. Survival horror first person with abuse of darkness, thrilling music, continuous disturbing feelings and zombie-like monsters. Ah, and no weapons, so you have either to hide or run!

Re: Good computer games?

Personally, I'd class Revenge of the Titans as an RTS, since Tower Defence originated with Warcraft 3. Still, a pretty good game until you get to Titan itself, whereupon it becomes ridiculously, insanely hard.

Strange Adventures in Infinite Space is pretty fun. It's like a Desktop Dungeons set in space. I think it's abandonware or free or soemthing.

Re: Good computer games?

Ok, so let's update grimy games :
Now availlable : Legend of Grimrock an oldshcool dungeon crawler. It lack of randomness doesn't cut all replayability if you consider how long the dungeon his and how many secrets it contain. Great puzzles. nice combat, but I would prefer them to be harder.
Now on kickstarter : Grimdawn a frantic ARPG. Not yet finished, but they do a kickstarter campaign to get more full time developers and to ensure enough content in the final product.

And one new game : Age of decadence, a pure RPG with hard combats. Set in a post-apocalyptic roman-like era, with a really meaningful choices and character development. They have a public beta and are listening their player base to fix every flaws.

Thanks for sharing Sil—I've been playing it non-stop for the last two or three days! Really a well-made game, and deserves greater recognition.

Solium Infernum: http://www.crypticcomet.com/games/SI/So ... ernum.html

TBS where you play as a Baron of Hell. Aside from the gorgeous artwork, what makes it stand out is that war is played as a great game where deceit, justifiable causes, diplomatic insults etc. are all part of your strategy.

Mount and Blade:

Medieval RPG and combat simulator with the best horseriding and ranged combat in any game I've ever played.

Re: Good computer games?

Worse than that- the scrolling dialog pauses between every sentence. Even the option to make all the text appear at once ignores this! Very frustrating considering the density of text it starts throwing your way. Pretty much anything you check has a multi-line response. When I started out, this stuff was funny. 5 minutes in, and I'm frustrated by the slow text, and by the sense it's taking forever to get anywhere. I mean, I'm an rpg player. I'm used to talking to every object in town. I'm not used to a 20-30s response each time. This really slows you down!

This only gets worse when you pass the first plot point and lose the ability to save (I assume you get it back later, or save points are introduced). Also weird- not all the responses really make sense for a person-who-went-through-the-plot-point-he-just-did-iac (...the things I go through to avoid spoilers. :p). Then it railroads you past a bunch more dialog, another scripted scene, and strait into the first dungeon, still without saves. Yay! I quit at that point. (Seriously. Always give people the opportunity to save after scripted scenes, or at the beginning of dungeons. We want the ability to quit when we want to, and we don't want to do that stuff over.)

I will say the battle system (well, what little I got to see of it) was very well done, dynamic, and fast. Unusually polished for an rpg maker game, really.

In general, I usually can't maintain interest in comedy rpgs, or ones with a jerkface protagonist. I mean sure, they start funny, but it wears fast. Whatever it is about an rpg that grabs my attention and gets me going is sacrificed for gags. Not that you can't be funny, or have a mean hero. I mean there's lots of games where it's worked (Tales of Phantasia, for one, manages to be very funny despite the normal nice people save the world plot. Or Disgaea- where most the cast is defiantly jerkface, but the game remains awesome and hilarious) but the fan-made games seem to stray too far or something. Dunno. :p

It is, of course, completely possible this review is superficial and insufficient if I give the game more of a chance. But if future-me decides to like this, that's his problem. He's a jerk anyways. Present-me isn't interested.

On top of what mageykun discusses the game ran for me in a tiny window with no obvious way to make it larger. I probably just missed something but added to the molasses pace I gave it a miss. It's probably best approached as an interactive cartoon not a game.

Try alt + enter. That toggles rpgmaker games from windowed to full-screen for me at least (if you've got a mac, or a different keyboard layout, the shortcut could conceivably be different).
