Constriction made Snake Pit no longer a walk in the park when you got rPois. It's HARD, especially if you're a melee.

Yep, they've always been able to do that. Actually, players used to be able to do that, too. It was pretty strong. So strong that it got nerfed all the way down to melee range, only it was never deemed important to nerf monster spells to go along. Learn Statue Form and you won't get taken surprise by anything; the surprise gets taken by you (and killed)!
