A Veteran’s 0.28 Dive Character #1
In this series, I will attempt to win a game by playing a randomly generated character. In this series that I am starting, the number before the hyphen signifies the attempt that I am playing, and the number after the hyphen signifies the goal that I have finished. In this case, the character has cleared D:11 and is ready to tackle the Lair of Beasts. I will be playing online for these challenges under the same name (wizard44). The milestones will be roughly the same as that of my previous “Complete N00b’s Journey” series. For this first character, I randomly generate a Vampire Hedge Wizard. for my first character. With that, I bring you:
A Veteran’s 0.28 Dive: Part 1-1
I begin by training just the Fighting, Spellcasting, and Conjurations skills, with a focus on Conjurations. I find a +4 ring of protection and a ring of protection from fire on D:1, and also learn Call Imp upon reaching level 2, prompting me to train Summonings as well. I also pick up a Trismegistus Codex on that level. D:2 had a ring of resist corrosion, and I learn Mephitic Cloud and add Poison Magic and Air Magic to my training, with emphasis on the two schools as well as Conjurations. I also find a staff of poison on that level. On D:3, I fall into a shaft into D:4, but luckily find the upstairs back to D:3, where I run into Robin. Robin quickly goes down to summoned imps, and I get her helmet. I learn the Blink spell and train Translocations to get the failure rate down to acceptable levels. Upon reaching level 6, I turn off Summonings training in order to focus on my other skills.
On D:5, I learn Freezing Cloud, turn on Ice Magic training, and remove emphasis on Poison Magic training. I also find a weapon boutique that has a randart +3 quarterstaff of Liamap {freeze, Int+3 SInv} that I initially put on my shopping list, but eventually remove since I would eventually primarily use my staff of cold or staff of poison. I descend to D:6 and find the entrance to the Ecumenical Temple. I then switch my focuses to only include Ice Magic as my emphasis. I then run into Sigmund the Dreaded, and use Mephitic Cloud, Call Imp, and Magic Dart to take him out. I next enter the temple and choose Vehumet as my god, as Sif Muna was not available.
After choosing my god, I then turn on Dodging training, and head to D:7, where I learn the Ignite Poison spell, and turn on Fire and Transmutations training. I take out a deep elf pyromancer using Freezing Cloud, and kill a kobold demonologist using Mephitic Cloud and Ignite Poison. I also clear a fortress of orcs using Mephitic Cloud and a nearby moat. I also get the +2 randart flail “Ecepto Igue” {freeze, +Blink Dex+4} on that level. D:8 had a two-headed ogre that I deal with Mephitic Cloud and Ignite Poison, and an amulet of reflection. It also had a Book of Frost, which prompts me to turn back on Spellcasting training and switch training emphasis from Ice Magic to Air Magic.
D:9 had an entrance to a bailey, and I use a scroll of teleportation to escape from a killer bee swarm and a group of goblins and wights. I find the bailey entrance and enter it in time. I also get Vehumet’s aid to destructive spells there, which allows me to emphasize focus on Spellcasting and to train Dodging and Evocations in place of Conjurations, Ice, and Air Magic. Clearing the bailey was simple enough, thanks to Freezing Cloud. D:10 had a book of Storms and the entrance to the Lair. I take out an eight-headed hydra using Freezing Cloud, and find a book of Decay. Another two two-headed ogres easily fall to Freezing Cloud, and I find a book of Conjurations and the randart +1 ring mail “Otemu” {rElec Str+2 Int+2} which I immediately put on. I train up Translocations again to try to get my Blink failure rate back down to the single digits.
D:11 had me learning Lightning Bolt, and turning back on Conjurations and Air Magic to get the spell’s failure rate down to the single digits as I clear the level.
So, I believe that I will not be using any weapons, as the staff of poison and cold are too valuable for me to pass up at this point. I might train Staves to mindelay as soon as I get the failure rate of Lightning Bolt to an acceptable level. I should be covered for Lair, as I have a leather armor of poison resistance, and have Lightning Bolt and Freezing Cloud to take out the hydras.
So the next goal for this character is to clear the Lair of Beasts and D:12. The big question is whether I will be learning any future spells in my library, as there are several spells such as Hailstorm, Frozen Ramparts, and Fulminant Prism that I could see myself learning if the scenario is correct.
