Version Questions

Trunk is different to dev and stable versions right?

What happens if you are playing a trunk or dev version and an update happens on your playing server?

How has the latest trunk version changed the gameplay meta?

Re: Version Questions

Trunk/dev is the latest version of the game, usually it is stable enough.

You will continue the game in your version, but when you save and load it, you will get a prompt to upgrade to the latest version. Sometimes (or is it on some servers) your game is stopped automatically and when you load it, it is automatically updated to the latest version.

Who cares about meta, it is a SP game where there are very hard and very easy combos.

Re: Version Questions

So with regards to this page:

https://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/howto

released = stable

and dev = trunk

If you choose a server running released version does that mean it is not updated as frequently? Or are all servers updated fairly regularly?

Most servers run more than one version, a typical server will run trunk plus several prior releases (some include offshoots or "forks" as well), I don't know if there *are* any released-version-only servers, if they exist, they would presumably update less frequently (the released/stable version is updated roughly once a year) trunk versions are often daily.

Well, somewhat closer to twice a year. (Isn't the devteam's goal twice a year? Or am I making that up?) The longest recent gap between releases was between 0.23 on 7 Feb 2019 and 0.24 on 24 Oct 2019. But yeah certainly not remotely as often as trunk.

Re: Version Questions

For major releases (0.X) it's twice a year, but there's also minor versions: 0.21.1, etc. With those, stable is probably updated closer to every 1-2 months. But yeah, it's infrequent compared to trunk.
