Your spells are a little harder to cast, but a little more powerful.


I started this game out knowing that most players were pretty down on gargoyles, so I was surprised by how easy the game was overall. The early AC boost helped quite a bit - of the regular dungeon levels, only Slime needed careful play, because of the armor-penetrating properties of acid. My overall strategy was to increase Str at every attribute point, and wear the heaviest body armor I could find. I used bows for my early ranged attack. In general, the gear I found was decent but not amazing - Trog was obliging (as he usually is) and gave me an antimagic executioner's axe. I switched from Trog->TSO once I was ready for Pan. A better idea would probably have been to switch to Makhleb directly, but it was nice to be able to brand a spare Exe axe with holy wrath, and to have the option to cure mutations had !Mut been scarce. Besides, TSO wrath is kind of a joke.

In the late game, very high AC, 50% torment damage, and HP refill from TSO kept me out of danger throughout Pan and Hell. Even with the occasional Trog wrath requiring me to burn a blink or teleport, only berserk stone giants and Cerebov could really put any kind of a dent in me.

The key find which made extended pleasant on a melee character was Aura of Abjuration. Without that, I probably would not have attempted Hell/Tomb, and would have stuck with Trog for Pan. With AofA, Tomb was pretty easy, and the one close call that I did have could have been easily avoided by playing a little more conservatively.

I had only done a Zig once before, but since I had found Darkness and Shatter I decided to give it a go. I found that only the Pan, lair (ghost moths and moths of wrath make a nasty team), and slime levels were any threat at all. It was nice to be able to rely on a powerful melee attack and only use MP for Darkness, AofA, and Regen. My play could certainly have been improved - for example, I trained evocations way too late, and I never took any !magic along. Mummy levels were actually pretty trivial since Mummies shatter nicely and nothing drains your MP. I could have kept doing more Zigs but I didn't see the point.

Overall, I would say that GrBe is almost an autopilot way to get 10 runes, and the low hp is not an issue in extended. If you find the right spells, you can count on 5 more and Zigs. Which is nice if like me, you can't stand playing early spellcasters.

For Spider-themed zigg floors, invisibility shuts down ghost moths, but entropy weavers can still be a problem.
