CiP: FoAK with unused Obsidian Axe

I've cleared Orc & Lair and now have a weapon conundrum since I've found/bought so many artifacts this early on!
I've mostly been using the first two with the war axe finding limited use due to Animate Skeleton providing such a great defensive buffer.

    the +3 arbalest of the Everdark (weapon) {speed, rElec}
    a +6 trident of distortion
    the +9 war axe "Fios Nykev" {drain, MR++ Str+3}
    the cursed +14 obsidian axe {chop, +Fly SInv *Curse}
I haven't used the obsidian axe yet and I'm wondering if I should use it as my primary/sole use, now that Loguno's Enter the Abyss is at 4% for the lower levels when I can't Shaft.
Doing so though would likely require me to modify my skills training strategy greatly, and any advice on that is also welcomed.

Btw, my plan before questioning the use of the Obsidian Axe was to get Venomous Bolt online and continue my abuse of Animate Skeleton for Shoals and switching it to Animate Dead for Spider Nest.

This character is spread pretty thin. I think I would probably turn off everything except crossbows until like 12+ crossbows skill (arbalest of speed is really good) and pick up pproj, looking for either heavier armor or to find ozos eventually. I can see an argument for just mindelaying the trident and killing everything with spectral weapon distortion trident instead though. I would probably train defensive skills after that. The exp in stealth and poison magic is basically wasted imo.

Well, Venom Bolt with skeletons is fine too and there is Animate Dead in the library.

Book of Frost was avail in a shop (and is one of my favs as a starting book) so I got it.
Didn't realize the synergy of:
    crossbows + pproj, and also
    Lugodu's Bend Space + Ozo's Armour
I assumed incorrectly that Ozo's Armour would deactivate with the recent changes in Trunk.
Thanks for the suggestions. I would not have thought of these two.

Ya, I know. I have a tendency to forget my skills training until the end of a level or branch...so I often start more skills training when some are about to reach their target. The way I justify it is: I'm aiming for the long game! lol
In the case of the Stealth and Poison skills, I simply forgot to set a target. My bad...but the latter one allowed me to quickly bring Venom Bolt online.

As for the Obsidian Axe, I did some searches on the Tavern & Reddit and the consensus seems to be: Don't Use It! ...unless you're looking for a totally different experience!
Ironically, this is what I got in Shoals using a +9 Trident of Distortion; it felt like Merfolks were jumping spiders! lol

As for spells, I ditched Meth Cloud for Sticky Flame since it works well with Bend Space+Ozo's when there's no option for a protected killhole.

I've now cleared the Dungeon & Shoals ...and heading to the Spider Nest where it's usually easier to create 1-on-1 killholes.
I'll post an updated Char Dump after that branch if...

My FoAK made it out of Spiders with just one scare that required 1 Potion of Heal Wounds as a precaution while they were all burning thanks to a Scroll of Immolation in the rune's vault!

I totally see Hellmonk's point about concentrating XP on a few skills as I still don't have mindelay on my trident of distortion, and neither have It made it to Hellmonk's suggested level 12 for the arbalest.
At least I now have the following spells below 10%: Ozo's Armour, and Sticky Flame (which came in very handy in Spiders)
..and Bolt of Magma is at 11%.

Now off to Vaults 1-4...but it's the farthest I've ever been with a FoAK.
For the CiP dump, I've temporarily added in inventory any interesting items. The only notable is:

YASD: FoAK on U:5 with a useless Bazaar

After V:1-4, I attempted the Depths.
All was going well until I went down to U:5 with a Bazaar in reach but with a mob swarming.
I made it to the Bazaar with almost $2K in hand, only to find nothing very valuable except for a scarf of cloud immunity for a measly 70aug!

After I exited the bazaar at full health, I used Bend Space many time until I could position myself with a doorway separating me from the mob.
Using many BVC, the crowd was starting to thin but I hadn't notice that my mana was now below 10; preventing me from using Lugonu's Enter the Abyss.
I decided to close the door and Bend Space away from the crowd instead of quaffing my sole Potion of Magic.
Sadly, I didn't notice that the door was reopened before I selected Bend Space...and landed in the middle of the crowd.
A few more stubborn Bend Space only made it worse leading to YASD!

RIP FoAK lv22 ...until I cross pass with your ghost!

Huh...can a ghost use BVC on a player?!? :shock:

RIP. Have you considered using Corruption? It is a great way to deal with swarms.
Underestimated: cleaving, Deep Elf, Formicid, Vehumet, EV

I've used it, just don't feel comfortable yet using it on a lower level.
Sometimes, I get knocked around too much by it and I've resorted to shaft myself.

Any idea if the Corruption will have dissipated if I use it on a lower level and resort to Lugonu's Enter the Abyss as an emergency exit?
Sometimes I get the feeling that time stands still (almost) on some level when my character is on a different level/branch for a bit.

Corruption is great — the way neutral and hostile monsters interact is counterintuitive in your favor. A mob on u:5 is about the best place for it. Just remember it's an opener, not a panic button.

Corruption should be used at high HP/MP (optimally at max) so you can use Bend Space and take some damage while trying to run away. Don't leave the level (shafting included) as I believe it stops attacks of the neutral monsters.

I used Corrupt in O:2 for a Ghost vault after the rest of the level was cleared.
I expected it to be an overkill tactic and it was!
My goal was to experience Corrupt ...and I can now report that the "neutral" monsters don't disappear when leaving the level.
Some of them even lingered for well over 100 turns as I healed above on O:1.

That does not prove they are killing monsters while you are on another level. As far as I know no activity happens on other levels except Jiyva eating items and there is special code that does it.

True!
Since I've had such a bad streak using Bend Space to got out of the action, I now feel more comfortable starting Corruption on lowest levels when I'm standing on a staircase going up.
That way I can quickly go up a level and shaft myself down so that I'm (likely) not in the middle of the action.
