Looking for advice on my current run (DsIE)

So I'm definitely not the best player in the world, I have 300+ games under my belt and not a single win, best I've done is snag a couple runes. This run is looking to be one of my best so far, I've picked up quite a bit of useful gear and spells and am looking for some advice on how I should proceed. Currently I'm in Lair 5, I've cleared the Dungeon to 11 and plan to finish Lair then do Orc.

I started as a mage, and still am but due to my spells, gear, mutations and god I'm quite capable in melee, though my AC could be better. I can handle a 6 headed hydra without too much difficulty but now I'm not sure if I should be focusing on magic (was thinking about getting invisibility online) or if I should be training my fighting/pole arms. I have a ring of wizardry and I can equip a staff of wizardry in a pinch if I need to cast a particularly tough spell.

One problem is Snakes is one of the Lair branches I have, but I don't have any poison resist. I'm hoping by the time I finish Orc I'll pick up at least one pip of it.

So given the equipment and skills I currently have, how would you guys go about progressing from this point? I would really love to turn this run into my first win, I think this character has the potential.

Ran in to an Ice Dragon on L5... put on my Ring of Ice Protection but he still gave me a run for my money so I fled, any tips on how to deal with that critter?

poison resistance really isn't much help in Snake (or anywhere else for that matter). naga magi and nagarajas' venom bolts and poison arrows don't actually do all that much damage, and they have limited range, and nagas are slow, so they're not a big danger. by the way, poison resistance for players is capped at one pip.

Well, I slayed the dragon and managed to clear out Lair:6, now I'm on D12 and I think I finally found the Orc entrance, so I'm going to tackle that. I'm worried about my 15/15 AC/EV though. Here's an update on my character.

I know I still have a ways to go, but I would really like to turn this run into a win, at the very least snag a rune or two. So should I do Snake or Shoal's after Orc? I believe the general consensus is to do Snake?

And about Snake... so your saying pois resist isn't as crucial as I feared? So would it be smarter to wear my +4 Ring Mail with rP+ or my +4 Ring Mail with MR?

there's seriously not much difference, having rPois does make Snake less tedious however (you won't have to rest as much) so I'd do that

I'd probably wear the MR one to avoid getting teleported into the rune vault on Snake:4. It won't make a big difference though, because your MR is still pretty bad.

Yeah, although it's a pretty decent run so far I haven't had much luck finding really good gear. Hopefully I'll pick up something nice soon, or maybe the shops in Orc will have something worthwhile.

It's a risk. I usually go for it, even without rC, but it is dangerous and I am kinda reckless. Be prepared to bail if you see strong demons or ice dragons or a frost giant and you don't feel confident in your ability to kill them.
Really, if it seems a bit too dangerous, then it most definitely is and you should get the hell out of there. Luckily, it is usually easy to bail.

It's always easy to bail. Ice caves always have an exit near the entrance, if you encounter something too hard you can just leave.

Yup, it was easy going until I saw a frost giant, debated with myself for almost 30 minutes :D but in the end I decided to strategically withdraw (i.e run away screaming). Ran a few errands IRL now I'm working on clearing Orc:2

Was reading your spell guide in the other topic (very nicely done, btw) so you don't think Song of Slaying is worth it huh? I can see that, I've only used it a couple times. Think I'm gonna free up the slots for something else.

Do you think it is too late in the game for me to focus on summoning?

I should be dead right now.

Just had a truly epic battle in Orc:2. If it wasn't for Wu Jian and my regen health from death mutation I would be long dead.

So I'm slowly making my way around Orc:2, taking care of what I come across without too much difficulty. Then the orc warlord popped into view, mind you I was already down do 5 magic points. At first I was going to teleport away but I had a few summons out so I said screw it. Needless to say, the warlord make quick work of my three ice beasts and spectral weapon, then he came for me. So I decided it was time to bang a hasty retreat, I read a scroll of teleportation then a scroll of fear and use serpent's lash to give me a good head start before the teleport kicked it.

It kicked in... and dumped me even further into the level, so now I'm completely surrounded by orcs, an orc high priest, orc sorcerers, orc knights and a troll and an ogre just for good measure... and here I am with 25 health and exhausted from the lash. I had no escape options, as I used my last tele scroll, not even so much as a blink or a haste to be had, so I said screw it.

I cast regeneration, infusion and then read my last scroll of fear, used heavenly storm and jumped head first into battle. What happened next was nothing short of wholesale slaughter, with heavenly storm enabled I spun from orc, to high priest, to knight, to troll and after I landed a couple good blows they just started dropping like flies, had my heavenly storm timer up over 20 at one point, after handing out death after death the orc warlord showed up again, by this time my exhaustion wore off so I used serpent's lash again and charged him. Dropped him in about 5 moves.

I think the final death toll was over 20. That heavenly storm is frigging awesome, I'm not even a strong fighter. I have 16/16 AC/EV, 10 strength and none of my combat abilities are over 10, yet I managed to slaughter everyone.

Good times, good times. So I popped back up to Orc:1 to heal and recharge now I'm going back down to Orc:2 to finish mopping up. I shouldn't expect another warlord should I? I'm really hoping I cleared out the majority of "things-wanting-to-stab-me-dead" Here's an update of my character for anyone who cares:

Three things from my personal experience concerning questions above:

  • I don't dare to do snake/spider without rPois (tough players do, I know)
  • I don't dare to do ice caves without rC+
  • duvessa's spell guide and tier lists are really good for looking things up - no matter if you play crawl for some weeks or many years. However, I strongly disagree with the rating of some spells. E.g., I consider song of slaying to be really good.

Snake and spider without rP are basically "don't fight lots of stuff at once, fight things carefully, rest a ton, have some !curing in case of emergencies." It's tedious but actually-dangerous situations are pretty rare.

A few things:

* You've probably figured this out by now, but teleporting on unexplored levels — especially branch ends — is something to reserve for dire, dire emergencies.
* Unless the warlord has a ranged attack (or reaching weapon), you don't need more than a one-square head start. Don't think of it as "running away screaming" but "walking casually away." You can basically walk away from normal-speed monsters all day long.
* Might is really good and probably would have helped you in your huge fight.

So, it's almost definitely too late for this advice, (and you're PROBABLY fine with storm up,) but you can just... walk away from those orcs. The sorcerer poses some threat, but the rest can't catch you if you just walk away, and serpent's lash will let you run the last little bit so they can't even follow you up stairs. Fighting multiple threats at once is inadvisable.

Yeah I know it was silly but I tore into them for a little while, got most of them and one of the Warlords, then made a break for Orc:1 to rest and recover. I think there are only a handful left, with the only real threat being the other Warlord, so I should be ok.

I also found a scroll of aquirement in one of the shops. Any suggestions on what I should ask for, given my characters skills/gear? Because I honestly have no idea what to ask for. :?:

I have no idea what the current consensus on acquirement strategy is, but personally I would go for either weapon (hoping for a demon trident) or armour (you have no cloak).

I didn't plan on really using it, I'm perfectly happy with my +4 venom halberd at the moment, just wanted to know for future reference, but any thoughts on what I should use the scroll of aquirement on?

EDIT: Nevermind just saw the post above. Hmm... armor sounds good, I'll take any AC I can get.

Well I used the scroll and ended up gaining a +2 Helm of Intelligence, so that worked out good.

Also decided to memorize summon mana viper, I hope it is half as useful as it sounds. It was either that, or summon demon. Am I right in thinking the viper is more useful? Spellcasters are a big pain in my arse so I figured that would be more useful then the demon.

I was also looking at Shroud of Golubria, but is it useful in the mid-late game? I'm looking for anything that can help my relatively low AC and HP.

At any rate, I'm cleaning out Orc:2 then I guess D12-15 is next, followed by snake. Is that the correct order to tackle them?

Both are very good: a pack of mana vipers will make any spellcaster pretty much harmless.
Two or three demons will kill anything at this point of the game. However the demon may be hostile - depending on spellpower - so you should use the spell nearby a staircase or in situation where an hostile summon instead of a friendly one won't screw you.

I'd memorize mana vipers, and avoid summon demon for now because being a new player that spell could ruin your day.
Shorud of golubria is like 10hpish so it's always good to use, as long as you remember to cast it. I'd also memorize ozocubu armor if you are in robe\leather.

Yes the order if quite correct - you may do D before Orc, if Orc spawn some nasty monster.

Well, I"m not quite a new player, I have around 360 games under my belt :D I'm just not the best or most knowledgeable player, hence this topic. :geek: Never gotten further then collecting 2 runes.

So, I have ringmail +5 (MR+) so ozocubu is out. I did just score Boots of Flying and +2 gloves (MR++) so I ditched the +2 (dex+4) gloves I was wearing. Also picked up a couple of useful spellbooks (Dreams and Almanac of Clay and Beguiling) but my spells are already all over the place, so although there are some spells I would like from them I dunno if I will be able to split my training much more then I am. But I did go with the mana vipers.

I just noticed the boots cause me to Fly automatically, is there any reason not to fly all the time? Should I just leave them enabled?

Hmmm... runed door on D12... to open or not to open...

Gonna need to contemplate this for a minute and establish a game plan of some sort.

EDIT: Actually, maybe I'll finish the rest of the dungeon then come back to it? But I'm so curious as to what's behind it... I think thats my best bet, hopefully I'll pick up some escape items on the next couple floors.

Just be careful around monsters that can cast airstrike (wind drakes, spriggan air mages, titans, blizzard demons + some uniques), as airstrike does more damage to flying targets.

Basically don't open runed doors unless opening the door is more fun than winning; the loot is not worth the risk. Really, my mantra for winning at Crawl is "never do something risky, because the game is long and eventually the odds will get you." I am bad at following this rule and rarely win though.

But I have mostly stopped opening runed doors until I'm insanely overleveled.

Oh, that's not what killed me. The runed door turned out to be rather anti-climatic. Just a bunch of orcs that I plowed through.

Have you encountered, the er... well, encounter :) , where a ring of humans surrounds you? buncha humans, like 3 uniques, I got beat down, I put up a helluva fight, though. :twisted: I forget their names, I know one's a centaur with a stupid strong fire/poison arrow, he's the one that got me.

I don't know that vault (it's probably listed in your character dump) but I do know Nessos. He's a butthole. He has pretty low MR, though, so a hex wand (paralysis, enslavement, polymorph) will usually work great, especially if you have a bit of Evocations.

Polymorph is nice in this case because it's permanent and changing him into something that can't shoot renders him basically harmless.

I don't use wands enough, but Nessos and Sonja are the reason that Beogh created wand of paralysis/polymorph.

That's probably the vault that imitates the V:5 welcome party. Whenever you see that vault, imo you should go back upstairs and use the one staircase down that does not lead in the middle of the vault.

That's probably the vault that imitates the V:5 welcome party. Whenever you see that vault, imo you should go back upstairs and use the one staircase down that does not lead in the middle of the vault.


I knew off the bat I should of went back up, but I was cocky. If not for that bow though, I would of mopped the floor with the rest of them. I also hadn't noticed my piety dropped a pip, so I couldn't use heavenly storm which really screwed me.
