Ooookay... it's not perfectly clean, but it's set up now, and FD should be playable off this.

I think the easiest newbie caster is deep dwarf, not gargoyle.

I think that the best noob caster right now is hill orc. Deep dwarf might be easier in theory, but it's marred by an unappetizing health mechanic.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

I think the best noob caster is draconian , mostly because, when I was a new player, the main problem with building a character with magic as their main offence was:
A: Having to balance AC/EV/Armour Skill/Magic schools against spell failure rates
B: Stuff like DE have bad defensive apts and no 'Plan B' offence if their mana ran out.

So Draconian alleviates issue A and B, considering they can't wear armour, they have +10% more HP, better defensive apts and can melee pretty well(and the breath weapon is okay for 0-mp emergencies in the early dungeon.)

Progress so far : OpFi, OpGl, OpWn, OpAr, OpCK, OpMo, OpBe, OpHu, OpVM, OpAM, OpWr, OpFE, OpEE, OpNe, OpTm, OpSk

Interestingly, the first game that I ever won was a DgFE. I still don't know why. I have never won a Dg since.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

For what it's worth, the Simple/Intermediate/Advanced distinctions were initially explained this way:
  Code:
The groups I chose for V1 are based on the difficulty for a new player to
learn the species, not overall species power or other attributes. I tried
to rank by relative ease of learning within each group as well.

This is somewhat subjective of course, but the general rule of thumb I went with for Simple was "extremely durable and/or great skill aptitudes, no significant rule-breaking, doesn't require much knowledge to leverage effectively". Non-standard move speeds and frail species didn't qualify. This species as proposed does not fit into this "simple" bucket in my opinion.

I think the most interesting part of the proposal is the mp regen / mp discount; the rest feels similar to a conjurations-focused spriggan, or a speedy deep elf.

Thanks for this Lasty.

I agree the initial proposal in the OP fell short in some of the ways you describe, most notably in the 'extremely durable' category because I was initially overly concerned with comparative balance to other species, instead of making sure it was appropriate to really meet the goal. Many pointed this out, and I already changed HP to match Halfling and Gargoyle, and the initial defensive stats are already significantly better than Gargoyle, which makes for a very defensible character. There were also some scaling concerns with the initial proposal that are helped by changing to 'small' instead of 'little' and gaining back access to all non-body armour slots.

Regarding rule-breaking, unquestionably this species does that in multiple ways - no body armour, slightly faster movement, and especially MP cost reduction - are all non-standard traits. But all three are targeted in a way that gives the player guidance (e.g. don't worry about encumbrance and armour skill) or smooths out the experience (e.g. it's not an emergency 100% of the time a scary enemy is adjacent, and you can always do something with magic and thus feel less pressure to know the comparative value of weapons/skill early on).

If the benefits don't outweigh the costs, perhaps another path is to have a species that is much more directly a Minotaur but with weapon apts and spell apts inverted + a ton of bonus mp + defensive stats. Still, with that approach I wonder if there would be enough guidance and help with things that seem to typically ail newer players, and it might not be different enough for more engaged players to welcome the addition. It's certainly possible that my perspective and philosophy sometimes mismatch current crawl's (and that's okay! It's just a proposal after all, and the discussion helps give me more insight for the future). I tend to highly value the element of fantasy and then rally/balance around that starting point whenever possible. Here that manifests in appearing at first blush to match the common thought of a "glass cannon" (clear spellcasting focus, some HP penalty, described as 'small', etc.), but have other attributes that make it not actually glassy at all and/or meaningfully compensate for it.

Ultimately I'd love to determine whether or not even the proposed goals have merit, and then if yes, whether or not this is a starting point worth iterating from to reach a design that meets them.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

I stumbled into this from UV4's channel, and I gotta say it's interesting to me. I'm not really suited to contribute as far as balance goes, I think, but as a scaly and lover of Dr I'm quite happy to see this and try it out. It's got lots of flavour that I like ^^

Might come back after playing it some with comments on it, but yeah, neat idea.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

I like this because it is a new way to play caster, especially at low levels which for newer players is 90% of the game. Specially the -1 mana cost on spells. The only other thing that I think is important is that it be somewhat obvious to people who just read the name of the race that you are a pure caster somehow.

Creating new unique ways to play is what DCSS is all about. So awesome job.

Mike.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

The MP reduction is awesome and could even be bolstered to make the late-game not terribly hard (if we're still afraid of this being a weak late-game species) - for every 3rd spell level, spells cost 1 MP less, rounded up. Levels 1-3 are 1 MP cheaper, 4-6 are 2 MP cheaper, and 7-9 are 3 MP cheaper. You could even slightly reduce the Spellcasting aptitude in this case to make the early-game slightly less easy.

There's been a lot of concern about this in this thread, enough that I briefly considered making a 2nd and 3rd rank of the reduction mutation to unlock at later levels... but based on the feedback I'm getting from playtesters of various skill levels, the base level is 'plenty' - it significantly modifies the experience on the earliest floors, and remains impactful enough to be a strong bonus throughout the game.

I don't want to bait-and-switch newer players, so the hope is that a player's experience with Faerie Dragon will leave them better off when they move on to magic'ing on other species. For more advanced players, the hope is (and playtesting seems to indicate) that the species' relationship to many spells compared to the norm is different, enough to sometimes shake up the experience by influencing spell choices and tactics.

For anyone speculating on late-game weakness, please playtest a bit (link below!) all the way through a game or two if you can, and let me know how it goes, so that I can get a better handle on whether or not the design intent being aimed at is getting hit - it's possible (likely) that more iteration and tweaks will be necessary.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

Currently, I have an AE game in the end of lair, so I now I know how the early game feels like on Faerie Dragon . So far, it's felt quite simple and noob friendly, the 'complexity' of the design only seems complex on paper.

In practise: you don't need to worry about encumbrance or developing/using other styles of combat(0 MP level 1 spells means no 0 skill dagger swinging or sling shooting in the early dungeon.) which means you can focus entirely on playing around with magic, and only magic. This seems to fit the intended design goals, at least for the early game.

Also, you aren't punished as heavily as a DE for positioning mistakes because of the insane starting defence. This also seems to be very noob friendly, because they don't know how to manipulate LoS or don't want to lure monsters into safe spaces, like corridors, which usually causes them to fight more than 1 enemy at a time.

This character is currently absurdly strong, my defences are 25/30 (with Ozo)... in late lair as a 'pure mage' character and I have Freezing cloud + Irradiate + lightning bolt all castable and at decent spellpower. The book of the Sky is available so I'll probably end up getting Tornado/Chain lightning as the endgame(possibly late midgame considering FD's aptitudes.) bread and butter spells.

Part of it's strength also comes from its quick movespeed and being able to completely disregard speed-10 melee enemies, but I feel like, as an experienced player, I'm more used to abusing that sort of stuff. Another part of it's strength comes from me knowing which spells are strong and which spells aren't, which a new player won't know.

It feels like a Deep Elf / Tengu / Draconian hybrid on crack, and it feels quite good to play :D I wish I had this species when I was learning how to play magic-using characters, it took a lot of trial-and-error with alot of failed DE's and Draconians. Playing FD would have been a much smoother experience.

I'll try and finish this game up as well, I'm quite curious about how it functions in the later parts of the game.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

Oh yeah, having Ozo's Armour would definitely fix your low defenses into fairly solid ones. Not a new revelation for a caster, but the high evasion combos particularly well.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

2 runes in (though on the outdated 1.1 version, dunno if I can transfer it over to 1.3). I feel like I got pretty lucky with my equipment and such so far, and I'm having fun using only three spells to destroy the world ^^

Xom was the first non-melee altar I saw, and I don't regret it (yet), been a pretty good time. Getting access to a book of power early on was nice, and +3 Conj got things strong fast.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

In my comment above, I didn't notice the speed aspect either. My other points remain the same, but I am now even more negative about this race. Since the OP has generated a lot of interest, perhaps I should lay out my criticisms in more detail.

Let's compare the idea to Be, in particular MiBe.

Berserkers are simple because you can simply ignore one aspect of the game (magic and MP), and Trog provides good panic buttons. Also, weapon selection is simplified with MiBe because they're good with everything. Playing MiBe teaches you the basics of crawl combat: positioning, stairs, luring, dealing with exhaustion, allies, MR. Also you still have to train skills sensibly (though there aren't many skills to train).

None of these aspects are true for this species as the "magic" counterpart to MiBe. Magic is inherently more complicated than melee because you have to keep track of two things (HP and MP). The species as it currently exists is just a "strong" species, and rather degenerate mechanics. The MP discount together with the high speed means that this species has infinite "ranged ammo" and thus allows indefinite kiting. I do not think that it is a good thing for newbies to take away. At least Hunters have limited ammo at the start.

If you want to help newbies play magic characters, the way to do so would be a normal-ish character, with good MP and some good panic buttons. Neither Vehumet nor Sif Muna, which tend to be the default "magic gods" have good panic buttons. Kiku does, but I don't know if it's popular with newbies (I rarely if ever played with Kiku when I started out).

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

Based on the char dumps above I have strong impression that main point of the species is crazy high EV while having good enough HP (EV 41 with just Dex 14???). Has anyone tried FDBe?

Based on how the species is playing out, it seems like it might be fine -without- a speed bonus, and too crazy with it.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

First, I really like the proposal, and would love to see it ironed out and put in the game.

That said, I think that 0-cost spells actually takes away from the stated goal of the race. When new players ask about stabbers, what's the number one complaint? "Why can't I sneak past stuff more?" People want stealth to be Thief-style "I can sneak up on and assassinate everything in the game with a little preparation." Now, that's not really what stealth is, and stealth is very powerful despite the fact that sometimes stuff wakes up and there's not much you can do about it. (Also, stabbers are hexers and that's just kind of how it is right now.) But if I'm a new player wanting to play a blaster caster, MP management feels like it SHOULD be part of that. What's the difference between a melee character and a blaster caster? Casters sacrifice survivability and staying power for versatility and damage. I think changing the MP reduction to "-1 MP (minimum of 1)" is a relatively minimal change that accomplishes two things: one, it allows players to get the feel of running out of MP without being really meaningfully different - you start with enough MP to kill most things easily on D:1 anyway and running away is both obvious and easy, but two, it's a more invisible way to get players into good caster habits. I think surviving to Lair with one of these guys as is would take some of the wind out of my sails as a new player. "Sure, I got to Lair as a blaster caster... but does it really count?" I don't think I'd have that worry if none of my spells were free.

IMO, if FD were to become more newbie-friendly and balanced then: (based off of my first impressions playtesting it.)
1. The speed bonus may need to be removed( and HP buffed)
2. Nerf dodging apt/ make them normal-sized.

(Although, I'm fine with FD as it is, but I'm a little biased because I quite like playing with OP things.)

That's taking away part of the core point of the race. Of course, reduced cost on lv2~3 spells would still be pretty noticable, but -not- having to resort to weapons is supposed to be a key feature of FD.

Also, lv1 spells mostly suck. Especially if the speed is removed (I think it should be), you're gonna be in a bad spot if you don't kill things before they reach you and you just keep casting lv1 spells at it. This can be true as early as D2; granted, this race still isn't likely to die so early as any offensive magic backround. But well by the time you hit lair, you need to be mostly using higher level spells a lot or you're gonna get wrecked, so MP management is still important. Just... you aren't gonna get to 0 mp and go "crap, all I have is this spear with 0 polearms training". And you'll have to fight, because it's got ranged attacks or >10 speed.

Also I definitely lose plenty of casters on D1. It might be because it's a jackal that I can't -just- run from, but EVEN MORE LIKELY, it's because there's barely any map explored; the only place to retreat is either into a corner, or into the black where more enemies are waiting that -will- kill me. So I walk back to the entrance, cast my lv1 spell one more time, the monster still doesn't die, and I have to awkwardly punch it with my fists (maybe a club if I found a weapon first).

Anyway, re:speed, I think they should either lose speed bonus on flying, or flying is not permanent and costs exhaustion. The latter still allows them to escape, but doesn't let them just kite things around a bunch.

0 MP freeze, pain, shock and flame tongue are all really good for early D actually

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

The species is very powerful without any magic too. EV 30 on Lair 2 without any bonuses from gear is OP, I have already killed 3 hydrae as Berserker. It's just too easy to heal while running away from almost anything and then berserk near stairs if needed.

For awhile yeah, but by the time you hit Lair they really don't do much. Freeze is still decent actually, but it's melee.

One fireball is better than 5 flame tongues, isn't it? Louder, but. 1/5th the casting time ontop of that.

Of course, at 0mp they still have uses. It's just, being free isn't giving you some free ride to Lair with no mp concerns.

It's actually a bit less than 41 EV in the case of my game, as they have an EV boost due to flight. Taking off my EV gear and ignoring the mutation, then stopping flight moved me to 35 (though the only time I can think of you'd ever stop flying is Airstrike)

even assuming this is true, 1 conjure flame and 0mp flame tongues is better than casting fireball even once

I've been trying it out, one thing I found is that you can't tab your spell at 0 mp though you can still cast it though z .

They currently have the same flight as Tengu which is both a speed bonus and +20% to EV.
Rather than nerfing dodging apt it would probably suffice to replace this with gargoyle/blackdraconian style permaflight, which doesn't come with any of those crazy extra bonuses.

Yeah, tengu flight should probably stay on the tengu; it's their own special race ability, after all. Small and +2 dodge is already enough EV and the speed is what's making the race Too Good.

Make some spell macros! Your casting life becomes much easier.

Why would you stop flying when calculating EV??? I had EV 38 on D:13 in my game when my character died due to boredom/easiness, that was XL 14 as far as I remember (Dodging about 12 and Dex 26).

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

38 EV at XL 14 is pretty insane, and shouldn't be possible anymore, unless you're playing on one of the earliest implementations. Since we're throwing our current character stats around, my current one is also XL 14, and has 23 EV (9dodging, 12dex).

I more recently pulled back quite a bit on overall power (basically everything, you can check 1.5 from the github link if you're curious), and while I want Dodging to be good (it's their only comparatively positive scaling defensive stat), the numbers I'm seeing in the most recent build are nowhere near what some are reporting here. I'm not terribly worried about specifics of EV values though, since hopefully all the finer points of tuning can get ironed out over time.

I'm hoping the implementation is clean enough and, even if some iteration is still warranted, hoping is worthy of consideration for wider playtesting. I submitted a pull request for it, so we'll see if that goes anywhere =)

I know about macros, this is just an observation about casting your first level spell through tab with this race, which is one of its special features that stops working if you are at zero mp, which is often when you want to use it.

I downloaded release yesterday, it was 1.4 as far as I remember. Dex 26 is a lot (I would have "just" 20 without gear)

Edit. I see you removed Dex from levelups 6 hours ago.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

Tab (automagic) not working properly at zero MP with your -MP mutation also means there are going to be other problems with spell_mana(), [if I'm parsing the code correctly, I think your current implementation won't work properly with mouseclick-casting on local tiles?], you might want to implement your -1 MP cost as an actual mutation, give the mut to your species, and check for the mutation being present in spell_mana(), instead of just checking for SP_FAERIE_DRAGON and hacking the cost down as the spell fires.

Also, although I'm loathe to bikeshed, I think that there's a lore problem with theming a player species as full-blown Dragons. Allowing players to repeatedly splat a species with the same name as existing high-end monsters risks giving unspoiled players a misleading impression of relative power levels should they eventually reach lategame.

This species sounds like it has promise, I like that you're trying to more explicitly fill the design space of newbie-friendly* spellcasters. Neat work. :D

*(I think that the game could strongly benefit from more attempts like this, including continued UI cleanup; Stone Soup is an alphabet soup mess of gameflow breaking modality shifts when it comes to not-tabbing.)

By the way the species still can be quite stealthy, at least I stabbed several things in Lair without training any stealth, one ring of stealth was enough. I think the species can be very powerful as Enchanter with Confuse/EH spam, it does not care about hunger unlike Sp and it has better magic aptitudes than Ce.

Is there like... a changelog for versions somewhere? I looked on the GitHub page for the fork but I don't see anything other than its 1.5 now.

...oh huh. I didn't even realize that was a thing!

edit:Okay, now that my internet is back up on my computer I can actually see the changes on the github >_> That part wasn't appearing on my phone.

Definitely definitely do this. (Also appropriate transmutations should suppress said mutation)

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

I am playing Enchanter at the moment (latest release, 1.5) and again I believe it is better to nerf EV in a very significant way. What's the point of spells if I have AC 12/EV 20 and have easy time meleeing Komodo Dragon before Lair?

I loaded the character in wizard mode. Vs Komodo Dragon:
  Code:
           AvHitDam | MaxDam | Accuracy | AvDam | AvTime | AvSpeed | AvEffDam
Defending:     11,8 |     34 |      27% |   3,2 |   100  |  1,00 |      3,2

If it hits me before it's dead, I just retreat a bit to restore HP.

Mouseclick casting seems to function fine. There are different checks for spell fail across the code (the known bug right now being with the lua automagic script) and they seem to look at different things somewhat arbitrarily (why??), so I or someone will have to track them down and either continue to hand fix it all, or figure out a better way to do it. It's unfortunate that the simplest implementation is insufficient, but I admittedly am coming at this from a place of relative ignorance.

I think it's great that expert player knowledge and skill can be leveraged to overcome things like -2 short blades, -3 stealth, and an initial stealth penalty... while this is possible and fun for some players to go off the beaten path, I don't think it will be the general use case. Why bother with spells? Because you'd be much better off for doing so.

If you recall, there was a lot of pushback early in the thread against over-the-top negatives, because it could too strictly limit options in a way that is unfun. It's not necessarily a problem that someone can find a way to succeed doing the less-good thing. But I have a hard time believing +3-4 EV is making enough difference to to trivialize the game, or else Rings of Evasion would've been nerfed ages ago.

All that said, if you believe it should be even more of an on-rails guided experience than it currently is, I'm open to it, I'm just skeptical for now. There are currently a lot of nudges that point in a direction, but very little heavy force.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

(This is for version 1.3 btw, so it's roughly up-to-date except for the very latest nerfs to conjurations and dex.)
Originally, I'd post this when I finished up my FDAE game, but I'm at the stage where my lategame character has stabilised and now it's just a matter of either winning the game or dying stupidly, so I'll post my observations about the FD lategame:

- FD overall feels a lot stronger than DE/Dr/Te/Dg at all stages, that's not really a bad thing, but if the intended goal is to dial down the power towards the end then that may not be achieved in practise.

- My lategame defence is 25/41/15, which is 81 in total, . This is on par with a heavy-armour melee guy(Those may have their defence distribution skewed towards AC than EV/SH though.)
FD defence, in general, has always been pretty good throughout the game. I think it's a good thing that there is a magic-using species(with high aptitudes.) that isn't stupidly fragile like DE/Te, however if FD are meant to be a little harder in the lategame then it may be worth reducing the ways the player can stack EV. I recommend, as suggested above, to remove the 'Tengu' flight and just give them normal flight without the EV bonuses or fast speed

- Fast speed is very forgiving, and I understand why FD has it. However, the Devs dislike fast species(or at least that is my impression.) and probably don't want to add more to the game. So, if fast speed is removed, it may be worth just bumping up the HP and fighting apt of the species, just a little, to compensate. This is useful from the newbie-player point of view as well, because fast speed isn't going to be as explicity useful to them as better HP.

- I got level 9 spells usable a little before I got my first rune in snake, if this is intended then I think that's also good for a new player trying out magic because they can pretty much get any spell they find online and ready to use. There's a lot of excitement in casting high-level big AoE spells like Tornado, which may make playing with magic a better experience for the new player.

Core features that need preserving:
= -1 MP on all spells (most unique feature that made me try out the species, and is the biggest differentiator between FD and other magic-focused species.)
= Inability to wear armour (No encumberance makes the mage experience a lot better.)
= Starting defence (Helpful for new players who'll need the defence, as they won't have built up good tactics and good positioning habits.)
= Strong magical aptitudes across the board (spells get online quickly, and gain power quickly.)

Everything else can be scrapped or changed.

This FDAE has been pretty fun to play. It got pretty absurd post-snake when I started spamming Tornado/Chain lightning at everything, that was great because I normally play species with lower magical aptitudes and only tend to get level 8/9 spells in the endgame. I'd like to see this in trunk, so I hope the devs do give this species a fair shot and let a wider pool of players playtest it.

I don't believe Lasty was correct in this assertion:
Lasty wrote:This species as proposed does not fit into this "simple" bucket in my opinion.

It's very simple, in actual practise. However, if it needed to be made to be conventionally 'simple' then bumping up the HP and making FD a normal movespeed would probably achieve that. That hypothetical change may make FD superficially similiar to draconians but the -1 MP cost on spells and better aptitudes(+worse melee aptitudes.) definitely set FD apart.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

Played a 4 rune FDFE in the most recent release and I essentially agree, it's like deep elf but good. Had less defenses than the above character because I opted for double enhancer firestorm but the principle is the same. Fast movement should probably get cut imo. There are a lot of species that have fast movespeed already: spriggan, centaur, felid, vampire in bat form, tengu (past xl 5). Fast species also tend to lead to kind of crappy gameplay re: kiting things a lot, but FD in its current form is strong enough that I didn't feel the need to kite that much in my game. They'd still be good at speed 10 though.

Would also advocate keeping the bad stealth unless starting stealth actually gets removed from mage starts (I don't expect this to happen). I am indifferent to whether this is done via aptitude, mutation, or both, but one alone is probably sufficient to turn new players off from training it.

For this message the author Hellmonk has received thanks:

Hey Hellmonk and Vajrapani, thanks for the feedback from your full games.

I'm starting to come around on the movespeed thing, and at this point I think it's likely to get removed, but before I finally relent at least let me make my peace.

The reason I've been reluctant to remove the movespeed bonus has been because of something I'd seen (and going back far enough, personally experienced) on things like Deep Elf where any time you're low on mp from D4-D9ish, every dangerous monster that manages to make it adjacent (like a 2-headed ogre) is an emergency that newer players struggle to resolve and often ends a run. I wanted (and still want) FD to be a species that, much like MiFi and similar, doesn't punish every small mistake early on. The bonus was also part of the "not strictly better at every stage of the game" intent; later in the game Boots of Running is less 'broken' since enemies aren't all 10speed melee dorks with no abilities. Removing it will likely warrant compensation in more raw power that might disrupt the current dynamic and threaten to make it harder to balance in a way that isn't strictly better by comparison. Maybe that's okay, as long other things still catch up somewhat, even if not quite all the way.

If you have any commentary on the above, let me know, and unless the unlikely happens and everyone is suddenly convinced, I'll be removing the bonus soon.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

While the species having good EV is fine, it's just that small+tengu flight scales too strongly. It grants +5 more EV off the bat on top of the small bonus (iirc? Might be merfolk) and later it bypasses the EV stepdown at 30, letting you easily hit 40 without equipment bonuses.

You nerfed EV by reducing dodging apt and dex but those scale better both early and late game. So basically, you did the right thing, but with the wrong method.

Cut by speed etc. You're not wrong, but this species is already far less likely to run out of mp and has much better defenses early, so it's already better off against those early threats. For true problems, people just have to learn to read tele scrolls.

If losing both is an issue the species could maybe come down to -10% hp. At that point it truly would be Simple, imo.

That can be an issue, 2h ogres and monsters like it are a pain when you're adjacent to one, but I feel like normal movespeed is the way to go because:

1. Raw power increases(perhaps in the form of increased HP or scaling AC/SH with XL or even better aptitudes or something else entirely) as compensation , after removing fast speed, still won't ever be as exploitable or as strong as fast speed. For example: Gnoll has made into the stable release and that species is incredibly strong and versatile(but still speed 10.)

2. It is probably more likely for FD to be put into an experimental branch(or trunk) if it aligns with the dev idea of a 'simple' species.

3. DE have low HP and low durability and also have no ability to cast spells at 0 MP. If we reverse condition 1(low HP) to normal HP then that will probably alleviate this issue.

I also have a very dumb idea to counteract this: FD can have an active ability that blows enemies a few tiles away and then exhausts them.( IIRC the white draconian breath sometimes does this.), flavour it as flapping their faerie wings very vigorously. This may allow limited escape options, but I strong suspect that FD will be more than strong enough to handle being normal speed and may overlap with Dr's active abilities a little.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but isn't it closer to +2.7 EV at the start? Can you elaborate on where you are you getting +5 from?

Tumalu wrote:letting you easily hit 40 without equipment bonuses.

Vajrapani's game is an example of barely hitting 40 EV without equipment bonuses, and even that should be much harder to hit now. When I get home I'll do some wizmode testing to get a little more informed about how it shakes out in the current version.

Tumalu wrote:You nerfed EV by reducing dodging apt and dex but those scale better both early and late game.

Considering -20% HP, no opportunity to train Armour, and small size's relation to Shields... it seems appropriate to have one defensive aspect that scales well. The aim is "very good" but not "godly", so if you try out the current version and then have related feedback, that would be super helpful.

Tumalu wrote:people just have to learn to read tele scrolls.

True, but imo that sentiment is unfortunate, and looks like it will remain true. Anecdotally, I was helped a great deal by playing Spriggan a lot when I was newer, and thus got to see what monsters were about without every small mistake creating an emergency. I was hoping to emulate that to the least extent possible (boots of running equivalent), but it's looking like it's not meant to be. Being more sturdy in general serves a similar purpose, but I think it's not all upside.

Tumalu wrote:If losing both is an issue the species could maybe come down to -10% hp. At that point it truly would be Simple, imo.

Losing either is likely an issue, and the movespeed drop may trigger the HP bump. Still evaluating the EV concerns, but you're right that it may very well end up needing additional adjustment.

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

The flat EV gain minimum might be merfolk instead, I'm phoneposting at work and can't reference properly. After being bumped to Small they already have better AC and SH than most mage characters will, though; and small with good dodge apt also means more EV than most, so they win in all three categories.

Some sort of two tile "dash" ability would also allow escape from adjacent monsters. This mightbe uncomfortably close to Barachi though

Re: Species Proposal - Faerie Dragon

I'll sound a discordant note again about this species and also address Ultraviolent4's question: "why do newbies prefer DE to Dr, even though Dr is objectively easier"?

I haven't been a newbie for years, but from what I remember, I virtually never had a problem with dying in the early game. If I died, I just restarted. It was only after I discovered Tavern that the thoughts of "winrate" or "early game difficulty is the only difficulty that matters because the game is won if you get to Lair" even entered my mind. Therefore, I dissent from the one of premises of the species (in addition to the various other criticisms I made above, if one accepts the premise). Let me try to illustrate it by looking at DE.

As I said, my first win ever was with DE. I still like DE way better than Dr. There are many reasons:

(a) Fantasy tropes, obviously.
(b) DE is a glass cannon, and I actually like playing glass cannons. In MUDs and MMOs, I would often pick glass cannon spellcasters. I doubt that I am alone in this preference.
(c) DE has great aptitudes in almost everything, so it's good no matter what you train. And you have so much XP to spare that you can train "suboptimally" and still be ahead of the power curve.
(d) DE has high spellcasting apt, so lots of spellslots to learn everything. Newbies want to try out different spells.
(e) DE very rarely runs out of MP in the early game (or late for that matter) -- and it's a huge difference with Dr and other races. (If you want a reminder, try doing a speedrun with DE and with Dr, and see how often you run out of MP on each.)
(f) DE can wear body armour (in practice, it's usually robes). I realize that removing armour choice might seem to be "simpler" to you, but "simple" does not equal "fun", otherwise Felids and Dg would be played much more. If you experience a DE with Archmagi or some other great robe, going to a much lower power Dr experience can be jarring.
(g) DE retains its power well into the late game. In later game, with high-level spells, DE can destroy everyone with spells, without even allowing them to hit you. In my first DE win as a newbie, I killed almost everything with spells. I did train weapon skills, but it was almost useless in practice. Who needs weapons when you have Fire Storm?

As I said, I don't remember clearly anymore what it was like to be a newbie. Newbies do want to win, but they also want to feel powerful, try out new things, and have fun.
