It seems to me that my equipment is just TOO GOOD. I mean, I didn;t get in danger for what seems an eternity, apart from some bad decisions in elf:3 and that required just a single scroll of blinking to get out from. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup version 0.21-a0-351-g38363bb (tiles) character file.

Re: Owerpowered Gear

There are some nice items in here overall, but mostly this just looks like the dump of a new player in the late game to me - in love with resistances and randarts and so on. The boots are probably worse than regular +2 boots and the rpois randart ring is possibly worse than not wearing a ring at all. The war axe might be good enough to win with but it's not that great because it's just a war axe.

Not really. I intend to go Tomb next, and I need RN+++ for that. Honestly, even +Fly was useful a few times. Besides, I've stashed a ton of Jewellery in depths, and I tend to buy stuff on the run. As for the boots, I might buy those +2 boots of running in
some shop in U:5, but I am still hoping I will find a better randart. As for heavier armor, Gozag prevented me from finding Gold Dragon Armour, and I have been using a +8 vampiric eveningstar, but for Crypt and Tomb i will go back to my personal bazaar (10 or so shops), by the temple and buy Undeadhunter unrandart. Of rings, I have at least a dozen, and I see no purpose in carrying them on me at all times. And yes, I tend to play patiently and farm my gear with Gozag, stacking strength and resistances.

Paste your dump between <code> tags (with brackets) to prevent it from taking up the entire page and also to have a monospaced font. Your gear is overall good but that's also part of the point of Gozag, you collect gold and you call shops to get better than average equipment. And even so your AC is 30 and your EV is 13, so I wouldn't even say you have very good defenses. High AC/EV are the best way to survive mistakes/dangerous areas; SH is also useful but certain things can disregard it, so it's usually considered a secondary defense.

The scarf isn't really all that great but I suppose a source of MR isn't terrible and you don't seem to be using any spells (but you should be). I do really like boots of regen, it's a shame they're only +0, but I'd still use consider them to be good. But they aren't +2 boots of running good - those are much better.

So my main body armor is +6 gold dragon scales - which could go all the way up to +12, but I didn't have enough enchant armor scrolls (this is a common problem with GDS). Even missing that 6 armor, I'm at 43AC/24EV, which is about +10 to each over your character, without Gozag for shops. I am notably missing rN, but that's only a problem if you're doing extended, and really isn't that big of a issue. My SH is lower since I don't have your unrand +10 shield, but that isn't too big of a problem either, the shield I have is quite good despite being sadly +0. Two resists, regen, and +4 strength with no downsides is a pretty lucky item find.

Strangely enough I also ended up using a war axe, but a broad axe is considerably better when going 1H axes, I just use 1H axes so rarely that I didn't remember which was which. Since mine had the elec brand, it was good enough anyways (elec is a great, great brand).

I have impression that some experienced players overvalue Str and tiny damage/AC increases and I am not sure what is worse.
In this specific case I am especially confused because you blame {+Fly rPois rN++ Str-3 Int+3} as worse than no ring and at the same time blame +2 pair of gloves "Lewkishu" {*Corrode Str+4 Dex+7} too.
The character has Str 35, it can take the -3 Str hit for both body armour and melee damage without any problems, while rPois and rN+++ make the character very comfortable to play, it uses +10 vamp war axe (relatively low base damage by the way so Str is less important than with triple sword, for example) and has crazy defense (AC 30, SH 37).
Corrode is bad indeed yet this character has +2 slaying, +10 weapon, Str 35 (4 of those come from the gloves) and again AC 30. Also SH helps a lot to block attacks and the character has normal speed and can retreat when needed.

+2 boots of running are really great with characters who don't need resistances and your character is one of such. The boots might save you the scroll of blinking which you used in Elf, for instance.

There is an obvious counterpoint: would you use boots of running or boots with rF++ in Zot 5 when you have no rF+ otherwise?
Also I'd rather use boots with MR+ in Orc 2 (paralysis) and Vaults 1-4 (banishment and door lock)
As an experienced player I can run away at normal speed before I am dead (unless there is nowhere to run but then boots of running don't help either)

I would use boots of running in zot regardless of my resistances. As an experienced player, I know that they vastly simplify luring, and make running away a matter of quickly leaving most monsters out of LoS which makes a huge difference. Things are much less likely to go suddenly south, if you only have one or two monsters on screen instead of a pack.

First I would be really interested to see a morgue of your winner who didn't have rF+. No matter with boots of running or not. I mean I have many wins without boots of running but I have none where I didn't have at least rF+.

Do you remember what we are discussing? Boots of running are good only for character with resistances. You said you would prefer boots of running instead of boots with rF++. Do you believe boots of running will allow you to run away from orb of fire???
What are you going to do with that orb of fire? I might even assume that you are mummy/formicid to make the question harder :)

What precautions? Will your quaff a potion of resistance before turning around every corner and opening every door? :)

Also let's not forget you can enter Zot 5 and immediately see an orb of fire (hopefully it won't be adjacent), electric golem (no rElec), ancient lich (low MR) etc. I would rather have some resistances instead of useless rRun+.
By the way is running ego even useful for stairdancing?

Edit. It seems you still miss that character without rF+ can be killed in less than 1.0 turn (2 attacks of orb of fire who has speed 15, each attack can deal 129 damage, it means you open a door or turn around a corner, see an orb of fire 6-7 tiles away and your next action is reading "you die..." message).

Tbh, I am going to do some training in the abyss while training only spellcasting and translocation, want to get at least blink and a few more things online. Armor and Ev are on their way, and I have found a rc+ slay +6 ring which i am not sure if i should use. This guy is probably going extended, in time.

I'm not entirely sure myself if getting strength bonuses are more important for characters with big heavy weapons, or ones with light weapons. Because while light weapons certainly recieve less final damage from multipliers, they also need more damage to get through monsters with AC. If you're up against a hell sentinel (25 AC) in extended with a base 11 damage weapon, you're going to really, really want all the slaying/strength you can find. OP said they intended to do extended, so I think it's a fair comparison. Also note that vamp won't do anything against it, so the +10 war axe of no brand starts to look pretty bad. Still 11 base damage is a lot better than a quick blade, so you can punch through the armor, it's just not as ideal. That being said, I usually avoid the enemy AC issue by just using very heavily damaging attacks, often unarmed, but otherwise something else capable of heavy damage. A war axe isn't really heavy damage imho, even at +10.

In the big picture, OP doesn't have bad armor, and the character looks decent enough, it just isn't the kind of equipment that I would expect to start an "overpowered gear" thread. I'd think the character would have at least 60+ AC+EV, if not 70+. Maybe I'm spoiled by chei dodging, but my last three wins had AC+EV of 86, 62(was out of statue form), and 89. I tend to prefer tanky characters because I'm lazy and I like to tab. I wouldn't be able to just hold down tab on OP's 'overpowered' character.

Personally I would blame autoexplore, not luck. Who autoexplores Zot? I want to encounter as few monsters as I can, not as many as possible.

That said, I would also take the rF++ over boots of running for Zot. I'm a good player, but not as good as crawlnoob apparently: I'd rather have a little buffer for mistakes, since I will make them even in Zot.

I certainly dont autoexplore ZOT, and as said, running makes luring enemies out sooooo much easier. If I was worried about getting one-shotted I would just go hit up abyss or something first and find a source of rF, but honestly its a pretty damn rare game if you can make it to zot and you dont have a single pip already anywhere-

I guess you have just proven how right I am :) I almost always autoexplore all Zot (except putting an exclusion to autoexplore rest of Zot5 before entering lungs area) because rF++ allows to laugh even at multiple orbs of fire (ignoring mutations here). I love when I meet several oofs in a corridor because I am still not in danger but can use a single potion of might and speed to kill them all

Whatever man. I can't even remember a time I did NOT take boots of running, I've never been one shotted by an OOF, and I always explore ZOT manually no matter how strong my character is because ZOT can go south faster than many other areas. For the record, I've almost never died in Zot, either, and I almost always clear it completely. Good play at that point in the game puts it in the bag.

I would take boots of running on pretty much any character that did not have rF except maybe a spriggan (low hps, speedy already).

I would take boots of running without a second thought for any other zone or situation in the game, period, other than Cerebov's castle.

You pick out one special place in the game, with one special situation, and get all sure of yourself? What exactly are you bragging about, again? Boots of running are phenomenally powerful.

Now I clearly see you are not reading my messages :( First you answered a different question, now you ignore Orc:2 and Vaults 1-4 which I mentioned also. I discussed Zot 5 and orb of fire in detail because it is the most obvious situation where boots of running don't help that much. By the way I might mention Depths 1-5 and Crypt as well (MR+ is more important than running away because of paralyze), also Snake (teleportation and most monsters are slow anyway). Of course boots are not that great in water branches so that means I would use the boots with character without resistances just in Lair and Spider.

At what point have you shown that I don't prepare to danger in advance? You haven't. All you have shown is that you prioritize differently, and clearly I disagree with your prioritization. I would argue that you value resistances too highly, and you severely underrate the deep effect that high movement speed has on a game of crawl, where movement speed is singly the most powerful and universal method of avoiding danger.

But I don't get all haughty-taughty about it. Get off your high horse, why don't you. Spamming emoji's and repeatedly declaring that you are right doesn't actually make you right. And you can be killed by ANY NUMBER of unfortunate chain of events which are all severely reduced in chance by being able to move quickly. You do your best to mitigate them, just like I do my best to mitigate mine, for example by not stepping around corners blindly and by destroying doors from a distance, but more importantly simply by carefully luring the entire floor while taking advantage of superior speed. It comes down to chance. How often does an OOF pop into LoS and get a killing shot in in the first place, compared to how often do you get mobbed by everything else? On the other hand, how many other things that can kill you on ZOT do so with an attack that is checked by rF?

As I can repeatedly clear ZOT and not die, I obviously have better control over that chance than you are willing to attribute to me.

Probably I was not clear enough. I'd like to see a situation when boots of running can save you while I will die without them. I mean I can run away from speed 10 monsters exactly like you do and it is not like 111% speed is that important when monsters with ranged attack are in view.

Edit. My main point is that 90+% monsters have speed 10 so you don't need speed advantage to lure them. It's not that hard to lure monsters even as Naga of Chei (ok, mostly joke :))

If you have speed 10 and a monster has speed 10, you cannot keep it out of LOS simply by walking as it catches right back up, especially if you have to take any action other than walking directly away from it. This is compounded when there are more monsters, and when monsters first come into view if they are not at the edge of your LOS (corners etc), and if you are distracted by killing another monster as they walk up, buying them actions. Now those monsters can use one or more actions including ranged or smiting attacks (and possibly fall out of LOS) to attack you. It adds up.

Boots of running totally changes that situation, you can lose an entire pack in only a few steps. If used correctly, you wont ever even see a full pack. You can afford to take extra actions. You can dramatically simplify just about any situation in a minimal amount of actions and without using consumables. Frankly, they are so overpowering they shouldn't even be in the game (along with perma speed boosts on species). At least with rF, you still take some damage. Dropping a monster out of LOS reduces its threat to exactly zero for as long as it remains in the black, irregardless of the monster or its abilities.

Why is it important to keep monster out of LoS? Because it is banisher/paralyzer? I would rather have extra MR.
If the adjacent monster with ranged attack attacks me, the distance between us is increased (7 attacks with running instead of 8 without, is it really big difference?). If the monster just chases me, I will use stairs to escape.
I can see how running ego can help to survive an adjacent dangerous melee only monster like Ogre or unique but this is not a big problem after Lair, you would need bad luck to get into this situation and even then you will always have enough time to teleport and move away waiting (let's ignore Fo here, boots of running are really great for it because paralyze is not a threat and teleport is impossible, though still I would rather use boots with rF++ in Zot over running, especially as Fo).

By the way, I won't see full pack without boots either. I will retreat several tiles after noticing first monster and will wait for the monster to catch up (around corner if I don't have ranged attack and the monster has).

Getting a monster out of LOS is 100% MR rF rC rPois rElec rN torment immunity AC EV and whatever else I missed. Damn straight I would prefer applying that to the majority of all monsters and taking a small risk that an OOF manages to one-shot me, than shoring up my ability to not die in that rare one hit situation (which if it does roll that kind of damage is going to put me at serious risk regardless of rF) while accepting increased threats from the rest of the monsters and a reduced ability to simply leave a situation if I am in trouble.

Guys... your argument is getting out of hand. Besides, I have pretty much all the resistances, 5 pips of MR, and still get paralyzed from time to time. As for running, I am going to learn haste if it is that important, and try to acquire RF+ footwear.

Also, there's several ways to be paralyzed that do not check MR, and cannot be resisted. Chaos branded attacks and giant eyes are the two I can think of off the top of my head, there may be another.

If you have adjacent normal speed monster with ranged attack, it will take 80 (!) turns to get out of LoS if monster just moves all the time. Of course it will never happen really because the monster will not keep chasing you for so long time, it will use its ranged attack instead. So in most cases you will be attacked 8 times without boots of running and 7 times with boots of running. If this is the difference between life and death, something is wrong with player's tactics.
If you have non-adjacent monster with ranged attack, it becomes even better for "no boots of running" character because in many cases you will be attacked the same number of times (basically once for every tile you increase distance).

So you would use boots of running to farm Abyss for source of rF+ while having boots with rF++ in inventory? Really?
Because if you wouldn't, then I don't see why you are still arguing with my "boots of running are great for characters with resistances".

It's OK I guess, you should swap out that scarf for a +2 cloak, boots for +2 boots of running, and the (f) ring for something better... maybe the gloves too. the main thing you should do is train dodging and armour
