Train Fighting.
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, Fighting would be it. The long-term benefits of training Fighting have been proved by Crawl scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.
Enjoy the wonder and beauty of Crawl. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the wonder and beauty of Crawl until you're jaded. But trust me, in 20 wins, you'll look back at your early games and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how much of a noob you really were.
Don't worry about GDR. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to win an argument by using listgame stats. The real troubles in your game are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you like a pack of caustic shrikes when autotraveling through Depths.
Fight one unique every game that scares you.
Autoexplore.
Don't be reckless with other people's robins. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.
Lure.
Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.
Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Keep your old morgues. Throw away your old ttyrecs.
Hold down Tab.
Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your character. The most interesting characters I've played I know didn't know by Zot what skills they wanted to train.
Carry plenty of evokables. You'll miss them when they're gone.
Maybe you'll win, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll get abyssed, maybe you won't. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.
Stairdance, even if you have nowhere to do it but D:2
Read the learndb, even if you don't believe it.
Do not read CYC. It will only make you feel ugly.
Play a Felid once, but stop before it makes you angry. Play Gozag once, but stop before it makes you greedy.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
But trust me on the Fighting.
