I am not happy with this. Nemelex already had a rework, didn't it? What exactly was wrong with it, and was it so broken that it required disabling? If Nemelex was broken in the version, one should see a lot of Hellcrawl wins with Nemelex worship.

The only thing which I can imagine people might find "broken" is getting a deck very soon after joining. This is not fundamentally different than other gods which give you perks immediately after joining. And it can be "fixed" by simply delaying the first gift.

I know many people don't like to play with Nemelex, but there's a simple way to fix this "problem": don't worship Nem if you don't like it.

Quick halloween update:
  • You can play as a skeleton. Limited time only! They don't have a cool player tile yet; if anyone wants to design a good one and submit a pr it would be much appreciated.
  • Fixed damage display for pain and disintegration, improved messaging for dispel undead damage.
  • Merged skill targets. The merge was kind of messy so there might be bugs.
  • After a 10,000 year struggle against the demons of the void, I got zip files together for people who want to download and play offline. They are available on the releases page. If there are any problems with them, please let me know. I should be able to make them more regularly in the future. Big thanks to Implojin and Gammafunk for helping me fix some of the problems I was having.

For Nemelex I want to replace stack 5, rework some card effects (especially pentagram and some of the boring cards from deck of destruction) and increase the impact of invocations on power. I might take a stab at goldifying decks too. I don't think the balance is that far off; you're probably right that disabling Nem was overkill. I'll try to bring it back soon.

Another god rework idea I've been kicking around is merging Hep into Yred. This would finish the transition away from having a god of permanent ally spam. Yred would let you enslave a soul about when you start to receive permanent gifts now, the soul would respawn like Hep ancestor until you replace it by enslaving another one, and Yred would keep the existing non-ally-focused abilities. I need to make sure it's feasible to implement before I make a decision on whether or not to go with this though. Feel free to tell me it's a bad idea or give alternate suggestions, but I do feel like Yred is in a pretty bad spot design-wise atm so I'd like to do something there.

Skeleton feedback: 1) please keep bonus AC/SH for longer. Perhaps lose -1 each time you are hit or something. It tends to vanish very quickly otherwise. 2) please give like +8 stealth apt so I can scare more monsters

PM me as much info about the crash as you can. The morgue file might explain why it's crashing. I couldn't reproduce it in like 2 minutes of testing but I'll have more time to try and get a fix out later today or tomorrow.

I think you made a lot of early uniques appear too deep. They're too easy now and there's never a risk where they force you to skip a level.

Was WJC removed? If so, any plans on putting him back in? His skills seem like a good fit for hellcrawl given that things like heaven on earth/wall jump are more effective with more enemies to fight, and you're more likely to fight multiple enemies at once with no upstairs.

WJC never got merged. I don't have any immediate plans to do so but I'm willing to reconsider if there's a good idea for what WJC "should" look like in a hellcrawl context. The current trunk version felt underwhelming outside of heavenly storm (which is an extremely powerful and pretty cool ability), and I was not personally a big fan of the old trunk version either. If there's a lot of interest I'd suggest digging up the old WJC threads and/or asking SteelNeuron if he's still around. Chances are there's *some* variant of WJC that I'd be willing to code or pr in.

Got it, I don't know how a "hellcrawl flavor" WJC would look like, but ditto on heaven on earth being cool. Hopefully SteelNeuron can check this fork out.

I have some feedback on deep water (sorry if it's been mentioned already, did a quick search): depending on the layout it will occasionally allow you to heal to full by being unreachable. This might be fine considering the lack of upstairs and also going back on solid ground usually means running into the same enemies you ran away from. I also noticed you could use wands still, not sure if that's intended.

In a recent game, I found exactly 1 (one) potion of magic after clearing D, Orc, Lair Branch, Vaults, Slime, Elf, Depths and Zot (I found it in Zot). By contrast, I found about 10-15 heal wounds potions. It didn't matter much since I was playing a DESu of Sif, so I wasn't exactly short on MP often. But I don't know if I was really unlucky, or if the weights are somehow wacky.

Sif piety gain is still quite slow (or maybe it decays quite fast?). I never reached 6* (160) in my recent DESu game. Though I did use channel magic fairly often starting in Vaults (is channel really meant to cost just 1 piety?).

A random suggestion: perhaps make the piety gain based on kills instead of exploration? I don't really know why there are two kinds of piety gain mechanisms anyway. Vaults:$ was quite rough on a Su, but since you kill a ton of monsters, the piety gain using the former mechanism would likely get it all back. Sif is pretty good anyway, so no real issues either way.

Sticking to Berserker only feels like you run into a brick wall around Depths/Zot, permabuffs are a huge benefit that compensate for the lack of XP and difficulty spikes later on.. it could be fun to do berserker and then try abandoning for another god though.

Yeah, almost every character wants to get permabuffs in Hellcrawl.

I'm having a lot of fun in Hellcrawl with both casual and speedrun mode. I've even won casual a few times! (It's pretty easy):

I had a CPA on and yet it was still worth training for four charms:

Sometimes it feels like surviving an entrance to a new floor can be almost entirely up to luck, specially early on (picture spawning into a spot where you're cornered and run into an orc pack with a priest on D:3 or something), so I had an idea regarding entering new floors: what if you had an XCOM2 style concealment at the beginning of each floor? The way it'd work is you would be invisible for a certain amount of time, but the only action you can do is move around, and even then you could break concealment if you move adjacent to an enemy or something, in which case it reverts to doing a normal stealth check. The game would warn you if you're about to break concealment, once per floor doesn't sound annoying. The purpose would of this would be to give you some breathing room to scout a bit, take a better position and decide what course of action to take. Concealment would work regardless of how stealthy you are.

You could also have a base amount of concealment turns (maybe 5?) and make it scale with stealth skill since it makes sense flavor-wise, I'm not sure if stealth needs a buff though.

The Orb could disable concealment since you feel badass with the Orb and you're no sissy that needs to hide anymore.

Speedrun mode is pretty fun, I wasn't specifically aiming for minimizing turn-count, just focused on not dying. The XP bonus helps a LOT, I can see this being easier than normal difficulty in some cases but a doom clock with rotting meant I could try trading off some HP for additional loot/kills.

I don't like that pan exists in hellcrawl. Pan isn't particularly dangerous after depths, especially if you forgo the boss vaults/runes, and by doing pan you make zot/hell easier. It's the same branching problem that existed in mainline crawl: Choose 1 - a longer game with lower mean difficulty (but more opportunities to die) vs. a shorter game with higher mean difficulty.

This isn't a fun question because the first option is all-around more tedious and less intense. Pan would perhaps be okay if the portals were located under the runes (so you are forced to brave the vaults) but even so it is kinda lame that characters strong enough to deal with pan are rewarded with a comparatively underwhelming endgame.

(The same is true of slime)

How about adjusting Orb run difficulty according to the branches you visit and/or number of runes you have? If you do this and remove Pan, you could just use a random Pan level (or multiple ones) as part of the Orb run, and/or scale spawn rates accordingly. The incentive for making the game harder this way would pretty much be score though (and doing more content if you feel like it).

Edit: Some more feedback incoming:

Speedrun mode makes orb run considerably easier due to Hell vestibule's portal being visible on top of all hell levels, not sure if that's intended.

Cigotuvi's embrace seems really strong for a level 5 spell, granted I was clearing Zot's floors entirely but once you get the ball rolling I was getting my total defenses to 50-70 AC and SH *each* (Cigotuvi was adding 30-40+ to each? Forgot to check), most of which you can carry over to the next floor which made me practically invulnerable save for some extreme hubris:

Jiyva piety seems pretty bad I didn't get to 200 until V2 using a amulet of faith the whole time since getting altar on d4 or 3, but I think 4.

In the dungeon overview (control + o) there's a line that says: (use Ctrl-F "altar" to reach them and ?/G for information about gods).

With the removal of upstairs, isn't it impossible to go back to altars not on the current floor? I ask this partially for my own information and also partially because the line is a (minor) lie now...

If you find an altar on the current floor, it will show up when you search 'altar' in ctrl-f, and it would indeed auto-travel you to it. So it's not technically a lie but at a (now) basically pointless feature.

Xom is a little too powerful right now I think (as dumb as that sounds), due to timed portal areas and Pandemonium not being affected by doom timer. Basically you can wait indefinitely for Xom effects and the only really dangerous effects you can get hit by are getting abyssed and maybe some hostile summons while you're too underleveled, and it's not too hard to get a rough idea on what you need to avoid dying. On the other hand the good effects include massive good mutation sets (near omni-resistance and robust 3 for example), more gold than you'll ever need and a bunch of random acquirement-tier stuff well before you enter orcish mines.

An easy fix could be to just enforce a doom timer on every level and it'll probably be fine. You can "juice" a current floor by pressing "5" until doom timer hits 0 but it's not nearly as good as having unlimited time to scum.

I dunno is this really all THAT strong. I mean I kind of doubt even the rather nice set of mutations you mention is actually stronger than the ability sets of some Gods. For example even though its controversial and some people hate him I still think a correctly setup Qazlal is stronger than what you mention. Now both gods have a significant downside, so for the sake of argument, let's just say the craziness of Xom and the noise of Qaz are roughly equivalent in negativity. I would still say the upside of Qaz is stronger. I think I would say the same of Sif, but there is no downside.

I agree it sounds kind of dumb, but I am not really convinced a nice mutation set is actually all that OP. Maybe the equipment is I guess I am not that sure on that, I guess if that had a clock similar to other gift giving gods it wouldn't matter.

This was at the end of the game after getting hit by bad mutations from orbs of fire, cacodemons, etc. so I started out a little better than that.

Everything else is functionally infinite gold and item acquirements just for idling; Xom stops being able to kill you through idling pretty early on. Plus, if hellcrawl is pursuing the idea of doom timers then it should be consistent and have them everywhere, I think that's uncontroversial..

So I finally took the plunge and made a serious attempt at a hellcrawl character, and made it to vaults:3, but man did I feel underleveled for that floor.

I had just barely gotten statue form going, and as a result my physical skills were still a bit low (I would have been raising them next, but well, died). I'm not entirely sure if there's any point to "finishing" training statue form since it's now perm, I should probably just cast it once with wizardry, and then go immediately back into training unarmed/fighting/dodging? I noticed if you take off wizardry it does update the amount of mana that is reserved, but this character didn't care if more was reserved as statue form was my only spell. It would limit how many Chei skills I could use, but so does piety.

I'm mostly wondering about branch order and choices of what areas to go to - it seems like lair is completely removed? I did dungeon -> orc -> spider -> vaults. When you get to vaults 3 it offers slime again, so I'm wondering if that means you can skip vaults:3 and do slime to come back, or if you don't get the silver rune then you never will? Does Zot actually require a certain number of runes or is it possible to skip runes and just get the orb?

As far as progression goes, if you're about to skip a branch and/or rune the game will notify you before proceeding. The branch order for a "full" 9-rune run is Dungeon->Orc->Lair sub-branch->Vaults->Slime->Depths->Pan->Zot but you can do stuff like Dungeon->Orc->Slime but that's obviously a lot more difficult since you'd be skipping out on a lot of XP and loot.

Found the lack of upstairs to be very, very brutal, but I suppose that was the intention. Vaults:3 (or 5 in main crawl) is a level I almost always stairdance. I did end up teleporting around the sides, but never quite managed to get enough time to heal - I was never completely alone. I think some source of regeneration is pretty crucial for prolonged fights like V:3, innate troll regeneration helps but he's also dealing with armor restrictions so you want an extra source usually.

I like using magic mapping because occasionally one of the quadrants will have a decent design to treat as a killhole. Barring that clustering enemies together and using immolation+slouch repeatedly or even facetanking a few explosions will overall buy you some time to retreat and recover a little despite all the noise. If that's not an option either a surprising amount of enemies are susceptible to wand on enslavement or other hexes (tengu reavers notably good targets), and if you've picked up vulnerability along the way you'll be able to enslave a lot of tanky targets giving you a bit more meat shields and breathing room. If you found any distortion weapons this is a good time to use them too.

As far as background choice, skalds are really strong in hellcrawl with the lack of upstairs since all of their starting spells are good for mitigating the disadvantages and they're all permabuffs. Song of slaying doesn't make as much noise as before and spectral weapon won't share damage so they're unlikely to inadvertently get you killed.

Lastly the exit to depths is always an option; it sucks to miss out on a bunch of loot and XP but depths is almost guaranteed to have more favorable terrain.

I tend to not use "G->" anyway, but it is more dangerous in hellcrawl because you can't go back up. However, there's no harm in making a shortcut for people who want to live dangerously, or want to save a keypress.

The message about the portal ("quiet chatter", etc.) about Elf is in the "normal" color, and is hard to distinguish from the background messages. Perhaps make it bright yellow like the other messages.

had a really strong ds here with both aug and powered by death. quaz is really nasty in the endgame, his abilities ravage everything on screen and piety is more or less refunded on disaster area. takes a while to get him off the ground though. i remember sitting on ** or *** till orc..

[This can be done in DCSS as well, but I thought I'll suggest it here first.]

Direct-damage spells usually have damage of the form: Xd(Y + power/Z). The way I see it, all direct damage spells should be some kind of distribution (binomial or normal or whatever you feel is appropriate) with these parameters:

[*] Dependence on power and, for the current power:
[*] Minimum damage
[*] Maximum damage
[*] Some measure of concentration around the mean.

It might be a good idea to make all damage spells follow this scheme, and show this data in the "I" or "M" screen instead of showing the spell-power, which is often meaningless. It can perhaps also be shown on the x-v screen for monsters. Hellcrawl has already gone in the direction of showing more numbers, so might as well make them more meaningful.

First the big picture: perm transmutations/charms are wonderful and totally awesome. Thank you. That said - I wonder if some minor tweaks to the numbers might improve specific spells.

The general case: with statue form at 14% and red miscast, I feel like I'm moderately cheating the system by being able to have statue form permanently when I would be going through red miscasts in the normal game. Actually I'd be swapping in that staff of wizardry, but you know, if I was actually casting statue form over and over I'd eventually have a chance to malmutate myself here. I am paying 8 mana to keep it up instead of just 6, but I wonder if maybe the reserved MP formula could be a bit more harsh - I feel like I'd want my character to be paying 10-12 mana at this point to emphasize that I'm getting away with skipping red miscast chance. If hellcrawl doesn't mind being a bit more forgiving than mainline crawl, I'm okay with that as a player, it just didn't match my expectations.

Specific feedback about regeneration: Low level charms are a bit of an interesting case - since regeneration is only level 3, any decently high level spellcaster who has around level 10-15 spellcasting and decent int (20-25) can probably cast it for 3 reserved mana with 0 charms/necromancy. It's essentially a free spell, only limited by finding the book, and that you are no longer in the early game. My above character has it at 11% fail (reserves 3 mana) with only 7.6 spellcasting, 33 int, and no charms or necromancy. I noticed hellcrawl compensates for this by making it only .6hp/turn, roughtly half of main crawl's regeneration. But I wonder if it'd be better to solve the "free buff" by giving it the haste treatment: Keep it as strong as it was (1hp/turn) but make it considerably higher level. Like haste is now level 9, make regeneration a level 6 spell, but put it back to 1hp/turn. It isn't free, but now if you do have charms/necromancy, you can turn on pretty powerful healing.

TL;DR: I would have expected the reserved mana formula to be a bit harsher, but it's okay if you stick with the current one too. For regeneration specifically consider making it like haste: stronger effect, much higher spell level.

A lot of the perm spells are definitely too good for their level, but it should be a minor numbers issue for most of them. Song of slaying is a notable exception where it seems to not make any noise, and that's definitely too strong for being level 2 *and* permanent which is already a big buff to the spell since it was designed so that the slaying bonus resets at some point no matter what. I'd make it so song of slaying makes noise constantly but not as much as DCSS.

That said, a lot of these perm spells being as strong as they are is quite welcome since it counteracts some of the nasty difficulty spikes present in hellcrawl, some just need to be less of a instant win. For example: Book of Unlife gives death channel and cigotuvi's which combined turn you into a nearly unkillable o-tabbing machine and they don't need much investment, making the rest of the game pretty underwhelming (though Zot and berserked GIAGGOSTUONOs or enough hellfire+torment can still catch you sleeping).

As a followup to the whole branch order thing, once you have the orb, you have to go through hell with it? Is hell mandatory? It seems very long - I'm in Gehenna now and it's still 7 floors? Do I really need to wander through 28 floors (4 hell branches) for a full victory, or is is shorter than that?

There's only one hell in each game. The exit is on the seventh floor next to the rune.

EDIT: I do think hell is too long. The orb run is a real slog.

Keep in mind that the casting say, blade hands, with a staff of wiz wielded no longer works too well. Because your wiz staff is immediately melded (or you need to unwield it), and the cost of the form is recalculated each step, you'll end up spending a higher MP cost. Also, keep in mind that the MP reservation for buff/forms hits some characters harder than others. Transmuters can basically ignore it, while caster types have a bit more problems.

I don't know if the red miscast matters or not. Statue form lasts a long time anyway in normal DCSS, and you can cast it well in advance of a fight.

As for the orb run, I don't find it a slog. Most of the time is spent on the last floor anyway, and the other floors are either very short or not easy (maybe because you get swarmed by a pan lord or two). The latter case can introduce tricky and interesting situations. It is true that 7 is an arbitrary number of floors, but so is any other number.

Btw, anyone who doubts that no food and permacharms are good ideas and make a HUGE difference to quality of life, should try Hellcrawl for just these features.

About regeneration: the spell itself is badly designed. Either it is a free spell (except for the opportunity cost), or it permanently deducts 3 MP -- which just means that you want to turn the spell off when you reach full HP, which just moves the tedium from the start to the end (there is indeed some reduction in tedium due to not recasting the spell again and again, I'm not denying that).

I suggested a possible fix here. Essentially, you tap your MP to replenish HP. This solution has the disadvantage of removing or reducing the synergy with sublimation of blood, which I use often.

Or you could just get rid of it, I suppose. This is probably not a good idea.

That seems much more fair. That said, if lair sub-branches are 3 floors, vaults is 3 floors, and lair got completely removed...I'm surprised hell is still 7 floors. Make it 3 or 5? Some of the floors have been quite a grind - a combination of hell effects, orb spawns, and taking the longest possible route around. The floor had a vault with all the stairs in one place and I made a slow circle around it until I found the entrance, basically fully exploring the entire level by the time I was done. This isn't everyone's experience but man did it feel long.

That's why you save a couple of magic mapping scrolls for the orb run. You should ideally have lots of consumables for the orb run. Anyway, the situation which you describe can almost as easily happen if Hell is 5 floors long.

The justification for cutting Lair and other floors is to reduce the XP in the game to make the difficulty curve tighter. By the time of the orb run, XP does not matter: you are trying to get out ASAP.

Like bel said, you wanna save on magic mapping. Heck, it should specifically be labeled as a yellow/high value scroll.

The difficulty on the last hell floor varies a lot though and could be adjusted; Cocytus can easily be a dead end since large gaps of deep water is a recurring theme, and without enough teleport scrolls or flight you're stuck swimming on deep water which is basically suicide.

I didn't have 7 scrolls to map each floor - I hadn't really used many of them before hell but I'd say I probably only generated around 5-8 scrolls all game long? Not sure. I did map two Gehenna floors, including the last one. The escape stairs were not near the rune though - after picking up the rune I had to go back across the floor to leave. I don't think they were there at first - is the hell boss now mandatory? Or at least ninja'ing the rune, that is.

You don't have to map each floor. And you don't have to pick up the rune. Runes are just for scoring: you can win with zero runes if you want.
