Current plans:
Get Passage of Golubria down to 4%, train for Deflect Missiles, at some point learn Air Strike and forget Force Lance. Some questions:
Is that sound? If Vehumet offers me Firestorm, should I learn it before extended? Are my Fighting and Dodging ok for Lair 2? When should I train them some more?

You can do Lair and Orc with the starting FE book. There's no need to branch into other schools right now. And it's way too early to worry about Fire Storm.

I would train more Conj and Fire (to get more spell power on your main offensive spells) and in general, Fighting, Dodging and Spellcasting (for generally stronger character). A bit of stealth also helps, but is not necessary. The order is up to you.

People say it isn't necessary to do level 9 spells before extended, I really like firestorm, it is a lot of fun to blast stuff with it, the earlier the better. With De aptitudes & maybe some enhancers, it isn't too bad to get, just realize it is still a LONG way off. I say go for it if you enjoy big spells as a long term goal. It is much easier to justify if you find some lower level fire spells along the way so you can get those online while building (bolt of fire, ring of flames, ignition).

I'm not sure why you are branching into air at this point. I think you might get more mileage out of improving the spellpower of your fire spells (e.g. train conj & fire). Increase spell power will allow you to one shot things that might have taken two, or two shot things that might have taken three. It allows you to fight longer without resting & keeps bad guys further away. Fireball should carry you through Lair & Orc while on the lookout for the next thing. Maybe shorter term goal of adding # or ## to your fire spells that aren't maxed out.

Also, don't neglect fighting & dodging for durability - you don't want to get damage spiked if something wanders close to you. I really like to see my EV in the 20's at this point. Spellcasting is an easy one to train for De. At some point soon, you will have more books & you will want the slots for to give yourself more options on spells. More options means more ways out of dangerous situations.

Lastly, you can probably add ++ to stealth with pretty minimal investment. I like 4-5 pips as medium goal. It is subtle, but it really helps suitability. With +3 aptitude, this is an easy pick-up.

Thanks for the advice guys! I was training air because I heard Deflect Missiles was really good. My plan was something like 16 charms/ 8 air. Is it really not worth it?

Too early to train for a lvl 6 dual-school spell. Concentrate on lower-level offence and defence.

Agree with previous poster, focus on getting lower level kill dudes really reliable (good spellpower & enough MP) and shoring up some basic defense. Deflect missiles is branching off in totally different direction that will eat up XP that you really need to get into your fundamentals. I don't find that i have much of a problem with enemies shooting me till yaktaurs in vault & maybe archers in elf. Even then, sometimes it is easier to just blast them with something strong before they can shoot you much.

Level 9 spells are offered as a batch of 3 right at the end of your rewards and never time out, so there's no need to worry about this decision.

Also, LOL at the +8 spear STR-5.

As far as spells go, you need to worry far more about getting a non-fire (earth or pure conjurations are best) spell of killdudes that is around lvl6 or more. Iron shot or OOD are both very reliable. If you dont have a way to patch up your offense agains elementally/fire immune enemies, you are gonna be boned long before you can even think of getting Firestorm online. It's also very nice to get bolt of fire as well, Veh won't always gift it so keep an eye out in the spellbook drops.
