Tasonir's .20 tournament report!

So as with all reports on multiple characters over a week since the tournament ended, these notes are subject to the limitations of my memory. I hope I got most of it right! I'll be going in chronological order, talking only about notable games, of course, and not d:3 splats. I'll be posting mostly just the very top of the morgues (basically up to the % screen) for space limitations, follow the links if you want to see skill training/notes/etc.

Since combo points are locked in on character creation, I decided to start with MiBe for some easy points. Found wyrmbane, decided to have fun with it, and 1h polearms works out pretty well when you also have a +6 slaying ring for a final total of +24 slaying once wyrmbane was powered up. Pretty straightforward berserker, and this was my first character of the tournament, so I now have a 100% win rate. Don't worry, it won't last :)

So nothing easier to follow up a win and ensure you get a streak than a troll, right? In theory yes, but well, it's still not a sure thing. This character was absurdly powerful all game long but had severe problems finding resistances. I finally found an rF++ ring before extended, but was going around with no rC except for ring swaps. Possibly I could have put on rC full time, but giving up a +6 ring of protection hurts a lot. However, it would fix problems like this completely botched fight immediately after entering pan. Basically I autopilot-tabbed through several fiends that I really should have taken more carefully, and then a titz-whatever (shadow fiend) shows up in a doorway several spaces away from me when I'm down to ~60 health. I handled the new mutation roulette terribly and I've got blurry vision, so I can't just blink out of range. I could kill it quickly if it gets in melee range, but I can't afford to run up to it, or wait for it to approach me. I think I ended up trying to quaff heal wounds and gain some health in hopes it would walk towards me, but it instead decided to do it's optimal move and blast me with a bolt of cold for 68 damage, which was more than I could handle. This broke the streak, of course, and on a character who really was above and beyond the power level needed to clear extended. I hate juggling resistances, as I frequently forget what I'm not resisting, and combined with blurry vision...Ouch.

I don't play Beogh characters all that often, but I like to get a Beogh win for the tournament as it's a very strong god and isn't won terribly often. Of course you don't get all that many points for either HO or Gl, but them's the breaks. I have also never used 1h axes that I can remember, so I wanted to try out everyone's favorite axe base type: the broad axe. Of course, I find an electric war axe instead (base damage 11 instead of 13) and didn't even realize it was the wrong base type until after I had won. Honestly, with elec branding, it might not really matter. That, or it's all those allies with polearms. I was a bit less good at keeping them all alive through most of the late game - my warlords got massacred on V:5, although I managed to have one or two with me for zot. As I escaped, "You could see the friendly Margrim the orc warlord", so at least one buddy made it out with me.

After this game I accidentally fired up a DgNe when I had meant to create a VSNe, so I quit the Dg and lost the streak possibility. Oh well, the first VSNe died as well.

So I started playing some odd characters, things that were either worth a lot of points due to their combo, or as in this case, were nemelex choices. CEFE is a bit of an odd start, but I had more or less fully converted into a standard melee + bows centaur at this point, even with a pretty nice +5 slay armor. It had horrible actual AC, but I figured as long as I kill everything at range first, that wouldn't matter. I don't recall exactly how I felt going into spider nest, but apparently even with rElec, a spark wasp was able to finish me off after being worn down by a berserked emperor scorpion. I might have had great damage output, but those scorpions are still huge tanks, and you can't kite a berserked one... This death was immediately after reading blinking, so that wasp bolted me from max range apparently. I'll miss those 75 bonus points, RIP.

VSMo is a hugely powerful combo and I was get a 15 rune victory as I hadn't done that yet. This VS found an impressive chain mail so I was torn between using that or learning statue form, but as I wanted to get 15 runes I wanted to get statue form for rTorment and the +30% hp, which is huge on VS. It's entirely possible I should have first trained slightly more fighting/dodging, although at the point I died I had only just begun to train for statue form, so isn't like I had lost a lot of experience to that at time of death. It was mostly just a botched fight vs a thorn hunter, which are always deadly when you're at 84 max health (although with 23 mana) in swamp. I had been taking a lot of damage from a hydra and attempted to step from time to save me, but sadly the enemies didn't really move all that far (or at least wandered back) and was blasted by the thorn hunter on my return to the flow of time. Rest in peace, poor plant, you were killed by one of your own.

Despite the background switch this is basically attempt #2 at the above character, and got a bit further, but for some reason I ran to do slime instead of Vaults:5. I don't think this was a conscious decision (I always do Vault:5 first), so I think I just forgot I didn't have 3 runes yet. This may indicate something about my mental state when I just forget to go do zot entirely and head off to kill TRJ instead. I did manage to kill TRJ, but all the summoned slimes and the building level of corrosion was just too much for me to finish off. Why I didn't give myself an escape route for after killing TRJ I can't say, but then again I can't even explain why I was doing slime before Vaults:5/Zot either, so who knows. At least I killed one of qw's ghosts, right?

So troll statue form characters are certainly stronger than ogres, but I rather like new ogres being decent at magic, and this was a nemelex combo, so that bonus 75 points was entirely worth it. I wasn't really intentionally speedrunning this character, but chei statue form characters are generally turn efficient, and a 67.5k turncount for 15 runes is good enough to get a pretty good score. This ended up being the species high score for Og, so all you other ogres need to step up! It was also the start of me winning the admittedly meaningless CAO-server-only high scores. But hey, when you consistently break your streaks with overpowered troll deaths, you have to make yourself feel better somehow.

So I don't know how this character ended up feeling weak, but I was having a hell of a time in spider. I remember having to escape from several fights and teleporting around trying to get the level under control. I could marginally cast statue form, although I had brilliance potions if I needed to get a reliable casting; I had blinking and teleport scrolls left in my inventory. I was waiting for a teleport to kick in when I died, not sure why I didn't also throw in a blink so I could have survived until I teleported. Likely a large amount of player fatigue here, but on another note, ever since when did entropy weavers wield glaives? I didn't know they could use weapons, is this a recent thing or am I just not paying attention as usual? And yes, that is a character dying with the ring of robustness and a +6 slaying ring. I'm as disappointed as you are. I believe this was also a streak candidate after the OgEE; trolls just didn't work out for me this tournament.

At the time of character creation, Op was the highest value race, and Ne was the highest value background, so this was literally the highest scoring combo I could have chosen. Cheibriados was far from the highest scoring god, but I wasn't about to try to hunt down a jiyva altar, so it'll have to do. Took a few tries, but eventually got one off the ground and found some really nice equipment like the hat of pondering and amulet of vitality, so the run went pretty smoothly once statue form was available. It's also really nice to have literally all your resistances covered, although I didn't find quite as many rings of protection as I would have liked (only one +3), I did at least have those two rings of evasion at +4 and +5, so my defenses were quite good. This character learned shatter and necromutation to do a Zigg for the clan points/bragging rights, and I got tornado online while I was in there, although I only cast tornado once since the zigg was pretty much clear by the time I got it online. Speaking of which I only used necromutation once as well, probably some mummy level or something, and used statue form for everything else. At least I cast shatter 45 times, so that's saying something. Despite running an entire zigg, I still came in at just under 67k turns, so this was another high scoring 15 rune game. It didn't get the species or background high score, but it is at least the OpNe combo high score.

Having lost so many VS to stupidity, especially when they are such a powerful race, I knew I had to win a VSVM when it was selected as a nemelex choice. Honestly I'm surprised more people didn't jump on the chance, it was pretty late in the tournament but it was up for a few days and only had 6 wins. The new poisonous vapours spell is very, very powerful, so the early game is a breeze and you can transition into anything you want, you're a vine stalker. I played the early game carefully but after getting established this is the only character of the tournament I would consider an attempted speed run - I started trying to cut turns where possible. I still autoexplore out of laziness and am not trying to set any sort of <30k records, but my goal was <50k turns, and at 46649 turns I'm rather happy with how it turned out. This was the VS species highscore, VM background high score, and of course that means it's the VSVM combo high score as well. Really I'm just kind of surprised no one else did a faster VS speedrun. Having the robe of vines on a VS was funny, but it was mostly melded all game long, so didn't really make that much impact.

Conclusion
Overall, I was pretty happy with my results, although there were some painful splats (mostly the two trolls) who died to nothing other than my complete carelessness, and maybe in the first case a bit of unfamiliarity with the new mutation system. I felt like I didn't have enough mutation potions* as I was constantly trying to clear bad mutations like berserk, but even when you're running low on mutation potions, if you have even just one, cure blurry vision. My main regret is not getting any streak credit, but 5 wins is pretty decent for how much I played, so overall my score puts me at 59th in the tournament, which is about what I expected. I won three 15 rune wins, two of which were nemelex combos and the third was OpNe, the then highest value combo, so that's at least some bragging rights. I'd have had a lot more points if that blasted troll didn't have blurry vision, though...

* Edit: Apparently that particular troll had 18 mutation potions and could have cleared blurry vision, I probably just felt too powerful to need to worry about it. I did experience a lack of mutation potions and having to use them frequently on other characters, so that point is still true, just NOT about the streak-breaker troll who died in pan.

IMHO +0 ring mail is never worth it for Na/Ce who have deformed body mutation, it gives just +2 AC and has significant EV/casting penalty. Use a robe or maybe even leather instead.

Yeah it was basically a slaying ring, with the premise that the best defense is a good offense, and my bow was pretty good so it mostly worked. And due to the +4 barding, my AC wasn't even that bad, although you're right the body armor contributed very little of it. Given the problems I ran into with the berserked scorpion, it's possible that having more AC would have been the right choice in the end, to survive longer until I eventually teleported.

Can anyone confirm I'm a fool and that weavers have always wielded glaives? I feel like adding reaching to them is pretty cruel. Or point out when they got changed to equip weapons?

Did you notice the change of transmutations' damage to not depend on character's stats anymore? How big of a nerf to Chei is this?

I did notice it, and it is a fairly significant decrease in terms of absolute damage. However, transmutations is generally such high damage that as a percentage, it isn't that extreme. When a fighter with a great mace is hitting for 30 damage, your statue form damage going from 70 to 60 is a nerf, but you're still overkilling mostly everything. Also to be fair I mostly use statue form, which had somewhat lower values picked for its damage - blade hands and dragon form seem to be using higher assumed strength.

For example, I managed to kill an orb of fire in a single hit on one of my statue form trolls. And then got that character killed later, which should underscore how careless I am. It'll still take 2-3 hits on average to kill an orb of fire (even with troll claws), but it's at least possible to do with some lucky die rolls.
