Let's Brainstorm a level one spell for Warpers

Every other book start has a level one spell.

Warpers are one of the least evocative and interesting classes anyway. Let's at least give them a starting spell like everyone else. (Preferably something useful on D:1 this time!)

Spell that strips the weapon from a targeted enemy. If you have empty fists and can wield the weapon, you equip it. Otherwise it's dropped at your feet. Resisted by HD, so it's pretty bad against Orc Warriors and useless much beyond that point of the game.

A charm-type thing where if an enemy hits you for damage they blink.

Not something you'd want on all the time, but could give you a little breathing room to throw your tomahawks of dispersal or head for the stairs.

How about if you take damage, *you* blink?

Would it really hurt to make blink level 1 otherwise?

I never thought of it, but it would help warpers a bit and it wouldn't really make life much easier for non-warpers. The main barrier to learning blink on most characters is just finding a book with it, rather than making it castable.

Imo blink should rather be level 4. Make shroud level 1 instead and nerf it somehow so that it actually would become useless at some point.

Blink should be level 3~4, not 1 or 2

Dimensional Pin: Pins an enemy to the space they are currently in, resistible by HD, and wears off after 1-3 turns. While pinned, the enemy can fight or cast/use ranged abilities as normal, they just can't move. Pinning an orc priest, for example, might actually make them more dangerous. Additionally, even at high spell power (which is probably the spell power cap of 50), monsters with an HD of 15+ are going to resist this generally all the time, so it's only useable on low HD targets. Displays chance of success similar to hexes.

Re: Let's Brainstorm a level one spell for Warpers

A Lvl 1 Shroud of Golubria.
  • Translocations only
  • Creates a "Shroud" status that times out based on spellpower.
  • "Shroud" interacts with the next instance of physical damage. If the damage amount is less than a spellpower-based amount, it is completely prevented. Otherwise, the damage is not reduced in any way.
  • Whether it works or not, "Shroud" goes away after a single damage source.
  • Casting Shroud causes exhaustion, and it cannot be cast while exhausted.
Won (52). Remaining (15): 5 species: Ba, Fe, Mu, Na, Op; 5 Backgrounds: AM, Wr, Su, AE, Ar; 5 gods: Jiyv, newNem, WJC, newSif, newFedh

And while we're on the subject, Tomahawks of Dispersal are not particularly useful. Get rid of 'em, please.

They miss so often! The solution is to train throwing, b-but my weapon skills.

Yeah, exactly. They're not reliable enough to be useful at whatever Warpers basic throwing skill is, but if you build up some throwing you almost certainly have better options.

And the removal of Portal Projectile and addition of Warp Weapon is moving Warpers more toward melee fighters, anyway.

Re: Let's Brainstorm a level one spell for Warpers

Put Apportation in the starting spell-book, but call it telekinesis . Make it identical to magic dart except smite targetted, translocation spellpower instead of conjuration, and 1/2 damage. A useful pulling tool, a little pre-melee damage to the target, and decent thematically. Still acts as apportation if cast on an object.

Not sure how easy/difficult that would be to code.

Favorite suggestion in this thread. The flavor sounds pretty sophisticated though for a level 1 spell. Maybe just "Pin"?

Level 1 blink is castable by every character, some with no skill investment, and becomes a no-brainer at 1mp.

Re: Let's Brainstorm a level one spell for Warpers

Level 2 blink is also castable by every character and requires pretty much the same skill investment
The difference between level 1 and level 2 spells practically disappears after the early game, so if warpers absolutely must have a level 1 spell it makes more sense to lower the level of one of their existing spells (which won't affect other characters significantly) than to add a new one when there isn't any design space for it.

"Pin" would be fine by me. I was mostly thinking of dimensional anchor (the -tele effect) and figured we could borrow a word.
