CiP: Audience Participation Encouraged! (Wednesday Update)

Alright folks, I said I'd do this and I'm nothing if not a man of my word. I'm giving you all a chance to decide how Leif's adventure turns out. Any time Leif comes to an important decision, you'll be the ones to decide his path. Anyway, Leif is a High Elf Ice Elementalist. He has just found the Temple and is awaiting your help to decide on a god! For such an important decision, he'd prefer several of you agree on a deity before he commits his life to their service.

Nah, go Vehumet.
You see here a dire elephant corpse.
You start butchering the dire elephant corpse with your claws.
You continue butchering the corpse.
You are engulfed in roaring flames. You stop butchering the corpse.
You die...

Well, if you must ask us, I think we can all agree that the appropriate choice for Leif here is our benevolent master, Zom.

I'd pick Okawaru, but I might be too late to prevent the vote from ending in the (mostly) horrible fate of worshipping Xom.

Re: CiP: Audience Participation Encouraged!

I think I'm going to write this from the first person perspective now. Unless you'd prefer third person or omniscient? Sorry for the long post time, I'm currently visiting a different city, so the updates will be sparse this weekend. Don't worry, you won't miss any of the action. Anyway, continuing...

These voices... Ringing out... Everywhere... Yet, nowhere other than my thoughts. I'm going to call the voices... the Pantheon of Advisors (that's you dolts, in case that was difficult). They are so disjointed, seemingly at odds with each other. Throughout the cacophony, one voice seems to shout the loudest, though it is but a whisper. CHAOS, it screams, silently.

So be it, I vow.

Image

*the next update will be sometime during the weekend, but they won't be really regular until Tuesday. Hang on until then! Also, any way to put the pics in a spoiler?*

Re: CiP: Audience Participation Encouraged! (Sunday Update)

Ok, I lied. You might get an update, sooner rather than later.

Seemingly as an immediate test for his new disciple, Xom chooses to present me with a challenge:

Image

Nothing I can't handle with the help of a few ice beasts and Sigmund quickly falls.

Apparently, Xom doesn't like cowards. Being swamped by a large group of orcs and an unfriendly ice beast, I choose to retreat and try another avenue of attack. Down the next stairs lies a sleeping Menakaure. Deciding to not test my luck, I try the last staircase. Xom chooses to punish my lack of temerity.

Image

Thanks, Xom.

After ignoring some of the more insane voices in the Pantheon, who demand that I swallow every substance I find in this accursed dungeon, I decide to backtrack and buy a few scrolls of identification. Lucking out, I discover that one of my concoctions will permanently (well, for now at least) increase my dexterity. I have also managed to find a pretty decent buckler.

Now, Pantheon, I BESEECH THEE! I have several questions:

1. I have been using a +2, +2 dagger of protection. Now that I have found the +4, +3 dagger "Ecwur" (stab, Str +1), should I switch?

2. Menakaure is still an unknown factor. Being resistant to cold, should I just ignore the undead king for now?

3. Should I use one of my potions of restore abilities on my Xom-reduced intelligence? It has affected me so that casting Icicle and Ice Beast are now only at Fair levels.

O great Pantheon of Advisors, lend me your voices! Guide me on my path to glory or death!

For this message the author MADDOGmjb has received thanks:

Despite my best efforts to ignore Menakaure, he managed to seek me out. Luckily, my Ice Beasts manage to handle him without too much eventfulness. However, I'm currently in a much, much more fun situation:

Re: CiP: Audience Participation Encouraged! (Sunday Update P

Apparently I was a fool to doubt Xom. I delivered myself from his test thanks to a blinking scroll and a teleport. However, I soon after fell through a shaft, falling to the ninth floor of this damned torture chamber. Once there, I managed to not break my legs, so that was a plus. Outside the entrance to the lair, Snorg managed to nearly slay me. He beserked and sliced through my Ice Beasts like wet paper. Anyway, managed to come back another time and clean his clock. Afterwords, Xom rewarded me for my loyalty with some mutations. Hopefully, they will come in handy.
Image

Once again, Magnificent Pantheon, I entreat you for your advice.

1. Found a book of minor magic. I already learned the Blink spell and Mephetic cloud. Anything else I should pick up from it?

2. I now have cleared the first level of the Lair. I know of the Orcish Mines, the Lair and the main dungeon. What should be explored next?

EDIT: 3. I've now found an entrance to an Ice Cave and also a book of Beasts. The two spells that caught my eye from that are Summon Butterflies and Ice form. Should I enter the portal and should I memorize either of those two spells?

Oh, and at some point, Xom left me with a fart trail. Thanks for that, buddy.

Re: CiP: Audience Participation Encouraged! (Sunday Update P

1. Minor Magic is the starter wizard book, right? Repel Missiles is nice.

2. Lair. I don't know if it's actually true, but the Lair almost always seems to have a higher concentration of spellbook drops than most branches, so I like to go there first when I'm a caster (as you are).

3. Ice Caves can have nice loot, but be ready for ice themed monsters (polar bears, ice imps, ice statues, and sometimes even frost giants and ice devils). Your call as to whether you can handle that. Learning Ice Form might help with it (and it's a nice spell if you're going to do a lot of Unarmed Combat). Meanwhile, Summon Butterflies is popular for spoiling the aim of monsters that shoot at you, or creating a barrier so melee monsters waste turns getting to you. I've never used it much, but others have, so you might see the value of it, too.

Oh great, Happy Corner, one of the highest Gods of the Pantheon, do remember, your advice is not so much advice, as it is commands. Feel free to command your humble servant, Leif as you will.

Also, Xom finds it hilarious if you hit yourself... Use that wand of confusion on yourself since you've been commanded to drop it anyway and CTRL+Arrow until Conf wears off :D

Xom ain't got nothing on the Pantheon.

ice portal would be quite deadly for you. xom would find it hillarious, but you'd be dead, so maybe not a good idea. otherwise, you follow xom, what are good ideas anyhow

Or Xom can decide to help Leif somehow.

Leif, identify your potions. And what this deck of cards do?

Enter the portal. When you see the horde of ice beasts and Xom is not going to help you return to lair. Anyway, it's worth to check.

Re: CiP: Audience Participation Encouraged! (Sunday Update P

I have determined ice portals to be useless unless you don't have any ice magic spellbooks.

The only treasures in an ice cave are items that would help you IN THE ICE CAVE IN THE FIRST PLACE, except for ice-branded weapons.

You get armor and jewelery that are rC+, but you have to have rC+ to earn it.
You get cold spell spellbooks.
You get freeze-branded weaponry.
You get, well, that's pretty much it.

I'd prefer if I got rC+ armor, that I get flame-branded weaponry, but I understand the theme.

Re: CiP: Audience Participation Encouraged! (Sunday Update P

Ok so the Ice Cave did not go so well for me. Not because I had a problem with the denizens of the cave themselves, not at all. In the first room next to the portal, I encountered half a dozen Ice Beasts and a quartet of white imps. I summoned five of my own Ice beasts and we duked it out. We came out on top (with barely a scratch on me).

However, Xom decided to spice things up with some FUN of his own. As we were killing the last two Ice Beasts, he summoned a reaper and an orange demon. Directly on top of the exit, I might add. At this time, I was nearly out of mana and only had 3 friendly Ice Beasts around me. I managed to kill the orange demon without much incident, using all of my remaining mana on two Icicles. This foe being vanquished, I still had a reaper to contend with. After seeing I couldn't scratch him in melee, I decided to make like a tree and get the fuck out.

So ended my adventure in the Ice Cave. (unfortunately, I didn't take any pics. sorry about that)

The expeditions are not over for Leif this day, apparently. I trundled my way down to the fourth level of the lair and what did I happen to find?

Image

So, should I enter or no? Also, Xom further mutated me, giving me carnivore 2 and made me frail. (canceling out my robust mutation) And as a final lol, Xom turned my dagger into a dancing weapon, attacking me. Needless to say, Xom was roaring with laughter.

Carnivore is actually a great mutation.

Anyway, labyrinths are good. There's only one minotaur (and the very occasional hungry ghost or trapdoor spider), and he's not poison-resistant. Just be careful, cause he can hit hard. Also remember that the labyrinth's metal section contains the exit/minotaur/treasure, the stone section is farther from it, and the rock area is farthest.

6 apples, 2 meat, bread, and a banana... You should be fine for the Labyrinth, go for it... But leave some of that gear on the ground before you go in. You'll need room for goodies... Most of those scrolls can be dropped, Restore abilities and Lev Potions can be dropped, Might as well drop the Un'ID'd wands, Curare Needles, Books and whatever staff you don't use.

Alright, I'm going in. I'll report back to the Pantheon once I emerge. I've actually never died in a Labyrinth, so I'm not too worried.

Maybe he's hoping that Xom doesn't read the forums... or that the Pantheon will protect him from Xom.

Re: CiP: Audience Participation Encouraged! (Monday Update)

The Pantheon is powerful indeed. Even though this was the second time this happened:

Image

THE SECOND DAMN TIME. Twice I was on the escape hatch and I was teleported. Once by Xom and once by a ring of teleport. So I had to make my way through that stupid maze 3 times. THRICE I SAY, THRICE.

Anyway, I finally made it out. WITH A BEASTLY +12, +10 sword of JIHAD. Ok, so I've never seen a weapon this heavily enchanted. Period.

1. Where should I go next?

2. Should I become a primarily melee fighter now because of that incredible sword? If not, how should I change my style? (Oh, and you should probably check out my char dump. I have some interesting stuff now. New books, staves, etc.)

Base type is more important than enchantments on weapons. It might be nice to keep equipped for the resists, but you should ID "a twisted jewelled staff" and see if it is something that will be beneficial.

I'd say not to change the playstyle just because of the sword.

I got Jihad once. -- It. Rapes. Everything.
Train for it. Use it. Slay the lords of hell.

Do try to find clarity, though, berserkitis is dangerous.

Where next? Finishing up the Lair is probably best. Then you can go farther in the main Dungeon or take on the Swamp, depending on where your power level is at by then.

Meanwhile, melee is certainly viable with a weapon like that... and your Ice Magic (with Ozocubu's Armor and other spells) will supplement melee well. Carnivore mutation will help keep you from starving to death from *Rage, too.

And speaking of magic, I command you train up Charms (focus it!) so you can memorize that Haste spell and get it online as soon as possible! (Deflect Missiles also should be on your agenda, but you need Haste!)

Re: CiP: Audience Participation Encouraged! (Monday Update P

i would not use the sword without clarity, berserkitis can trigger at the worst possible times, wear off quicker than expected if not hitting stuff and leave you slowed or even paralyzed.
if you have clarity (and don't need rMut) it is a great weapon against undead and demons, and still good against everything else.
Base is Holy eudemon blade, which means -2/14, due to min delay 6 one of the best 1h-weapons available.

i'd say go melee with some spells for support.

Didn't realize it was Eudemon base. In that case I'll put my vote behind hybrid as well.

Yes, eudemon blade got buffed
dam/speed
from 13/13
to 14/12
Probably the best base class 1h weapon now. And Jihad is the best in its base class. Probably.

*Sorry guys, guess I lied. Things are more hectic than expected. Sorry I've been taking so long. I was also having connectivity issues earlier. Anyway, I took the liberty of exploring a bit more of the Lair. Nothing much interesting other than what's below.*

Hello again Pantheon. Not much new to report to the voices. I managed to get my shield skill up to what I think is good for bucklers, and started working on my skill with Long Blades. Other than that, Xom made me a bit smarter and turned me into this:

Interesting... Anyway, I'll clear out the Lair while I wait for advice on what to do after that.

I didn't know Xom could turn followers into liches! That's actually quite a break for you... then again, you can't use potions or that Jihad sword. Hmmm.

When you've cleared Lair, Swamp is probably your next bet if you have a source of rPois (I'm assuming the lichform won't be permanent). If not, I recommend going deeper in the main Dungeon until you find one. (Yes, I am well aware that it IS possible to clear the Swamp without rPois if you're careful, but why make things harder for yourself?)
