Metroidvanias

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

Re: Metroidvanias

Well just to put it out there: play the Metroid and Castlevania games.

I really like Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow...Dawn of Sorrow is good but it's annoying to draw seals if you play on emulator.

I'm not sure Iji can be called a "metroidvania", there's ten levels and you can't return to the cleared ones. The later levels can get pretty expansive, though. Also, version 1.7 soon!

Re: Metroidvanias

Seconding Untitled Story, Iji, Cave Story.

Dust: An Elysian Tail is good, it's not exactly deep or hard but the combat is silly and fun (you can literally fly anywhere you want by mashing the attack buttons in the right way), it has the best-animated main character of any video game I've seen, and the voice acting is right out of a 4Kids anime dub

Guacamelee is great all around, excellent music, and it's like, the only game that realizes Spain and Mexico are different places

Does Psychonauts count? Because you need to play Psychonauts

Honorable mention: Knytt Underground for successfully capturing the frustrations and fears of atheists, disabled people, and lesbians (albeit not always in a very nice way)

Re: Metroidvanias

Metroid style exploration games are such a flawed concept imo, the only one i played and finished was castlevania circle of the moon, after that i tried playing Symphony of the Night and super metroid but it just didnt work for me.

Re: Metroidvanias

This thread is 8 posts in and only minmay is mentioning anything remotely recent

Stand the fuck back, I've got this

In addition to everything mentioned upthread, especially Cave Story, La-Mulana, and the entire classic Castlevania/Metroid libraries:

Axiom Verge
Rabi-Ribi
Environmental Station Alpha
Odallus: The Dark Call
Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight
Castle In The Darkness

If you're counting Dust: An Elysian Tail, you might also want to check out Valdis Story: Abyssal City

I'd be remiss not to mention Ori and the Blind Forest, although that game isn't personally my cup of tea

Honorable mention to the entire soulsborne series for being a modernized take on the concept

I'm probably forgetting a bunch of games, there's been a resurgence of quality classic-style metroidvanias in the last few years

If you like one that's a bit lighter on the "this area is gated until you get double jump" and also a roguelite, Rogue Legacy is WAY more fun than the trailer implies. It's one of my go-to depression games haha

Re: Metroidvanias

I think you have to be pretty hardcore to enjoy Valdis Story. If you don't carefully minmax your character the boss fights take forever and you are permanently penalized for not getting an S rank on bosses (which means killing them quickly, not getting hit much, and not using any of your life potions) so you're incentivized to retry them over and over, and there are also some items that are arbitrarily shut off forever if you don't do things in the magical "right" order. The fast travel is also woefully inadequate.

evilmike was a level designer for Ori and the Blind Forest, btw.

evilmike and minmay are like lovers meant to be together in a corny movie, except they don't really love each other, but their internet paths will keep crossing no matter what, eventually culminating in both of them waking up in the same alley behind a Tim Horton's at 3:00 AM, after two completely unrelated drug incidents, after which they'll run away in opposite directions, not recognizing each other, and never realize the cosmic purpose behind their meeting

Yeah, but really, what is the definition of a roguelike? When you think about it, it's not really well-defined. Like we could talk about the Berlin definition and of course the now-ubiquitous "roguelights". Indie game developers have really been expanding into new areas of the roguelike design space recently with such innovations as metroidvanias and roguelikelikes. But then you just have to go back to the original Rogue to see how it all fits together, you know? Please discuss!

Re: Metroidvanias

I really wish we as a society could just call them metroid style games instead of metroidvanias, both because it sounds stupid and also because open world 2d exploration is like every metroid game's thing while mainline castlevania is linear level based platformers. SotN was good but it's more of a side thing to what definitive castlevania is

Re: Metroidvanias

Thanks for the suggestions guys. As of now I've gotten through Cave Story, Axiom Verge, Momodora, Guacamelee, Ori, Rogue Legacy, and Psychonauts, with some of the Castlevanias up next. I'm kind of depressed that I have almost entirely consumed the genre considering I've played all of the metroids and most of the games tangentially related.

Another Metroid 2 Remake (AM2R) was supposed to be pretty cool. Of course, Nintendo issued a cease and desist on it, so it may be difficult to acquire and the legality of doing so may also be questionable.

Also, here's a link to everything on Steam with the Metroidvania tag, sorted by average user reviews:
http://store.steampowered.com/search/?s ... &tags=1628

There are several titles listed there that are pretty good and haven't yet been mentioned in this thread. Shantae jumps out as the most obvious, but I'm seeing games there as low as 80% positive that are totally worth playing.

Wings of Vi is another game from the above list good enough that it should be mentioned, but it's also an extremely hardcore precision platformer that you may or may not enjoy.

environmental station alpha was good although i remember one buggy boss battle that was very difficult (serpentine monster encircles you and if it attacks from a certain angle it will circle you for a while at extremely small radius and unavoidably kill you)

Re: Metroidvanias

Resurrecting this thread because I had to post about Hollow Knight:

It was released 3 days ago, and it's absolutely fantastic. It's like Metroid and Dark Souls had a love child, and abandoned it to raise itself in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind's setting.

It's more polished than Momodora: Reverie. It's gorgeous. It doesn't feel like it's dragging on with backtracking.

Play this game if you like metroidvanias.
