CiP> YaVP: DeCj^Veh (3) (Staff of Wucad Mu)

I've rarely gotten this far with a blaster caster. 2 runes from Swamp and Spider. Cleared down thru V:2 so far.

Picked the Staff of Wucad Mu out of the Wizlab Monastery (accidentally skipped down to V:4 and there it was). The Wiki made its handicap side effects sound scary. I have no SustAb and restore potions are gone. How does one use this staff? The Wiki also says it is somehow related to a staff of Energy, but does it have any passive MP effects? Or is it more, evoke in desperation when low on MP?

The rings and buckler are great so far, but there's very little shopping in this run as yet. The only other possibly interesting item for sale would be a Cloak +0, rC++, MR -1, Regen+, Str+2.

There is mottled or swamp dragon armor around, but kind of liking my EV.

Pondering how much to rush Fire Storm. Could also take up lower stuff from the Book of Flames again. Other books now available are Enchantments, Power, Warp, Earth, and Necromancy.

You can use wizard mode to find how many skills in fire/Conj you need for Fire Storm. My estimate is about 19-20 each, with Vehumet, Int 40 and that wizardry ring. I would stop training spellcasting for a while in any case.

Oh, and is there any cap on training bonuses? Just picked up the Manual of Spellcasting from the lab. So, does the total +7 actually work that way?

It's the best channeling item when you need MP quick. Unlike a crystal ball of energy, it can restore MP from 0.

It's been a key item in my best zigbuster build. The main drawback is that it might confuse you, so Clarity goes great with it, but the amulet of Four Winds is rare. However, confusion in non-lichform can be cured in a single turn with a curing potion, so it's not a big deal.

I think most, if not all, of the miscast effects of Wucad Mu are gone, particularly the Int draining. (I.e. the wiki's out of date.). I have probably been using it mostly with clarity recently (zigg runners), so confusion might still be there, but I haven't noticed a miscast effect in a long time. (I still mostly use a crystal ball for MP, but that might be habit from when Wucad Mu was more dangerous. I also prefer to wield a real weapon by default, and switch to Wucad when the crystal ball drains my MP.)

Can anyone confirm?

Finished Depths 3.

Fire Storm is online. Fire Magic still at 15, Int still at 40, 4% fail around 19 Conj and 3% at 20 Conj.

How much MP exactly does the Amulet of Magic Regeneration feed? I haven't kept track very well, but also picked up an Amulet: rF+ Regen+. Wishing for some auxiliary armor with elemental resists already...

Also a staff of Conjurations 8-) and an Iron rod.

One-shotting some giants and dragons with Orb of Destruction and Poison Arrow is fun! Spriggans are frightening but clouds wear them down quick.

I don't have much experience with Wucad Mu, but the relevant code seems to be in art-func.cc. As far as I can see, Wucad Mu invocation has a chance of divinations miscast, which means a chance of confusion, int drain and MP drain (spl-miscast.cc). So nothing seems to have changed.

Cleared Depths and Elf. Poison Arrow (with stealth) and Fire Storm (in the final chamber) just trounce Elf.

Gained one very temperature resistant amulet... And books to carry out of Elf. Now I have too many choices. 4 scrolls of amnesia. Could get:

Aura of Abjuration
Poisonous Cloud (is there a point when you have Fire Storm and Freezing Cloud?)
Blink
Wall of Flames

Not quite sure what to trade off for them.
Does Dazzling Spray work very well in Zot? It's been a while since I used it there. I think it worked some, but not sure. I didn't use it much since early Depths, but it does have very flexible targeting.
Could probably dump Mephitic Cloud... Haven't used it much lately either.
Regeneration is nice in a pinch,but not sure if it's worth the slots. Mixed on Fireball -- It's much more useful for small-scale fights than Fire Storm but still, 5 slots there too.
I've seen people do amazing things with Wall of Flames on an elf eventually, but I don't think my melee defense is up to relying on it too much yet.

There are also a couple more wands lying around elsewhere (Disintegration, Lightning, Digging, Confusion, no "super" utility wands yet) -
Have hardly gotten to wands though. Have more offensive rods now. Maybe time for a little more evocations soon.

wucad mu/crystal ball;

once you got the evo skill required (20++) i would use both in combination, use crystal ball only >40% mp, and wucad mu only to get from 0-40%. crystal ball restores more mp than wucad mu, but wucad mu works from 0mp. this is often not worth it outside of zigbuster builds but well a deep elf lvls this stuff quickly enough for a normal extended game i guess.

you can mostly use a better staff or weapon then. it also helps to get more max MP from items, around 70 is great for CBOE in my experience, since fail rates are percentage based and you spend less turns channeling with more MP.

both got the same divination miscasts afaik, and i think with the removal of sustat stat restoration through gaining XP was improved, so the only way you'd run into problems there is if you get other massive stat drain additionally (like 1-2 mummy zig floors while using the items i guess)

Did Slime. Fire Storm makes it pretty easy, except maybe for those packs around stairways. :D

Not much in the way of loot apart from still more gold (artifact Dex rings, free crystal ball, couple odd Fire/Ice/Summon spellbooks)... But, no malmutations yet (firestormed those eyes right quick!) and brings up the option skip V:5 for now.

That rapier is a +3 flame, rN+. Not super but an alternate source of rN for the moment.

There is a pair of +2 gloves in one of the Elf shops: Int+4, *Corrode. Not sure if I need to add Int that much. Even after getting drained in Slime (wore-ID'd one bad ring, oops), Fire Storm is still at 6% miss. Oh and there was a Staff of Wizardry too.

Evocations still low for the recharge items, somewhere around base 16 yet. Getting that up high on an Elf is a bit of a pain, with so many tempting spells to power.

Zot:3. Still going strong.

There's quicksilver armor all over the place but... Even with almost 11 Armor, I would lose 3 EV. Is 12 Str too little to wear this stuff without losing EV? Would a little more armor skill probably cut it?

I imagine there's a way to check in Wizmode, but I'd kind of like to keep my score for posterity (not that it'll likely be anything special but anyway).

If you want to check in wizmode, you can dump your character (type '#'), start a new character in wizmode and load the dump (type '&#' and enter the filename).

In general, quicksilver dragon armour isn't worth wearing at that stage in the game.

I tried in the client. it says "Which dump file?" but it does not allow you to paste or to choose a file from disk. If you start typing in a URL but minimize the client, the entry field gets mixed up. I don't know what file folder it knows to look in for character files. I'm also not sure whether copying and pasting the data from the website would result in a format that it can read in my own new text file.

If you are playing offline, the file will be in your "morgue" folder.

If you are playing online, and have an offline copy to run wizmode, you need to download the character dump file from the server and then load it. It's a simple text file, so any simple text editor like Notepad (I don't know what OS you use) would work if you want to copy-paste.

If you can't get it to work, you can simply load a new character in wizmode and set the relevant parameters (Str, Dex, Int, armour/dodging skill) yourself to the values in your character dump.

When you hit # in the original character it should say where it is dumping the file, you could write this down (or copy/paste it if you are in a console window) that makes it way easier to load with &#

I'm also thinking about whether to take this one further.

Have good resists except for low rN and only a hand weapon with rElec, which would bop off the staff of power again.

Most of my offense has been fire, Mystic Blast, and Orb of Destruction. (A touch of Freezing Cloud here and there for attrition.) I could get Icicle, Iron Shot, maybe Crystal Spear but those slots... Is it necessary to take up some Earth magic for the more extended stuff?

I could see doing possibly Abyss and Crypt (though somewhat scary with silences/drain/torment), just maybe Cocytus at the outside (? it's pretty tough), but not sure about the rest yet.

abyss can be risky with noisy casters if your defs/hp/mp restoration arent good enough.

Haven't done Vault 5 or Zot 5 yet.

I can add a crystal ball for the more ongoing struggle areas.

There are 4 scrolls of amnesia available now. Lots of books, most anything from Fire/Ice/Earth and Annihilations, mid-level Summoning stuff.

Actually, Iron Shot / Crystal Spear / Aura of Abjuration would all be easily castable - so tempted to add on some of those. Maybe time to dump Fireball and Dazzling Spray after all...
Those two earth attack spells are both looking around two pips short of max on the preview. Funny as I have zero Earth school training.
Simulacrum, O's Refrigeration, Bolt of Cold are also doable if slightly less strong until Ice comes up.

i would delete some of the conjurations(yea dazzling, iskernderuns and fireball are candidates here), and take more utility spells which increase your survivability. you should be able to cast firestorm and other high level spells non stop with your MP restoration now

that are mostly translocations (like passage of golubria, cblink, dispersal/discjunction maybe) to escape,
necromancy (borgnors, death channel, control undead etc),
summons - especially malign gateway is great in extended because you get it from translocations and it cannot be abjured and you dont care about more noise. aura of abjuration is also worth it


dont know which books you got though and you dont have the XP for everything of course


otherwise probably cheap to get staves as melee where your high evo skill also helps (staff of fire to melee popcorn)
and more dodging!

branch wise i would probably do crypt now and put XP into dodging and fighting for V5 and abyss.
if you approach those carefully they should be doable, in abyss just teleport early enough if it looks like you get swarmed and lost HP, in vaults dont be afraid to use consumables like agility/haste all the time

there you can work on one of the higher investments i proposed like translocations, if you got the spells. with translocs (cblink mainly) i would go pan after crypt/abyss/vaults/zot

the first 10 lvls of a ziggurat should also be doable to refresh consumables a bit and gain more XP, and you also play in 0.19 but dont have any of the yellow wands?! any of those would help too and might be in a zig or V5

ozocubos armor is also decent if you stay in steam dragon armor

Yeah, Controlled Blink is around if I can get the Translocations going for it. Expensive slots but I suppose it's powerful stuff...

Do you have to wield the Crystal Ball like a rod, or do you just evoke it freely without hands? (I like the boost from Staff of Power; that's a lot of MP.)

This is my first time getting this far with a Conjurer (not to mention an elf), so I've never really worked with the channeling and high level Necromancy. Honestly I'd be pleased just to get through Vault 5 (seems possible but actually doing it without mistakes/random ugliness may be another matter) and into someplace that's more routine.

Checked wands again. Nope, no yellows so far.

There are still plenty of digging, lightning, iceblast. Some acid, confusion, paralysis, polymorph if you like it (I've really hardly touched the ones that came around - just firing spells and low on Evocations til recently. I rarely use polymorph, but sometimes have had luck with it in a pinch.)

The potion stock is also just what you see on me. Same for scrolls, except I could enchant up a blue weapon.
(This Dungeon was not too generous with shops. I have lots of gold...)

Not sure how important the Buckler is going to be in a while. Have occasionally blocked high level spells with it, so leaning toward keeping one... But if I were to give that up, there's a Lajatang of Fire too. (Although Staff of Fire is also about - not sure if they compare?) On the other hand, I want to keep Int/EV going from this level and I kind of wish a stronger artifact buckler would show up too.

yea seems i confused you a bit with my first post ;P i said "evocations 20+" if you go extended so in hindsight it would have been more wise to level this later, and go for better defenses/hp and utility spells earlier. then you wouldnt have been so low on consumables now. sorry ;) i was just explaining the mechanic

you dont really need more damage spells imo, forget about nado and chain lightning. chain lightning is best used at close range versus single targets without rElec, which your char doesnt want to do because youre too squishy. you also dont have rElec atm (make sure to switch it in in zot vs electric golems,storm dragons,black draconians)
if anything, take iron shot or LCS. but usually orb of destruction does the job already. not sure if youre using your servitor but it is better if you dont have so many weak spells and just load it with orb of destruction/lcs

i see you are struggling a bit consumable wise, thats why i mentioned the zig, thats probably the thing i would do after crypt. but if you dont feel comfortable with that, might as well try to go win or just do crypt and vaults or abyss. i wouldnt do vaults 5 now with so low consumables and without a little more XP, that seems quite tough.
you got some tele scrolls so abyss is more realistic, just dont fight there and use more silent spells if possible, dive to lvl 3, teleport early

staff of fire would be perfectly ok, but survivability has priority now imo. so thats just an option for later on if you wanna continue

crystal ball can be simply evoked from inventory. you can for example map it to letter V, then make a macro (ctrl-d) VV to evoke it with one keypress

at first youll wanna go for dodging + fighting 20 at least. your hp is way too low

then look for the lowest lvl spells from your books which help your survivability but dont cost XP yet
that'd be ozocubos armor (book of frost, lvl 3), apportation to get abyssal rune without starting an endless fight, aura of abjuration (book of summonings) should also be cheap with your int/wiz ring and is good versus lich and draconian summoners. in extended its good versus pan lords, including the uniques and in tomb.

unfortunately thats it with cheap spells mostly. control undead has its uses but mostly in tomb/crypt

controlled blink/disjunction is definitely doable to get online before or in pan with your int, but if you dont get more consumables that wont be easy so maybe you shouldnt go extended this time.
its super strong sure,almost like unlimited blinking scrolls, which allows you to channel mp out of LOS. and escape/get into superior position (dont use it when youre almost dead, but to position yourself safely before you start nuking)

dispersal and disjunction are good in zot and on orbrun, and to remove melee enemies from close range. if you are tight on XP, just dispersal will do (lvl6)

Thank you for all the advice!! I'm afraid I'm not so quick at this defensive aspect of casters yet.

There weren't all that many amnesia scrolls around. Used the four I had, went to upper Zig looking for more (nope! just cMut potions), finally found two more on a draconian in the Orb chambers of Z:5... :!:

Did Crypt in between there, but it was the most incredibly underwhelming Crypt I've seen in a long time. Or maybe it's partly that I can Fire Storm everything... :lol: Not much resistance, but not many items either. A Manual of Summonings; tossed that on and put a fraction of training into raising Aura of Abjuration. Which I also keep forgetting I have, as I tend to automatically AOE amd Bolt the heck out of stuff. :o

Took Iron Shot because I wanted to have something non-fire, particularly for OOFs.
Picked up Dispersal (forgot to use it on a couple occasions, bleh), took a while to remember to get the O. Armor but finally did. Mostly so easy getting by with nuking stuff from orbit (the fire spells and Poison Arrow still rock).

Felt like Controlled Blink takes a whole lot of Translocations training. I have Transloc at 7 and it's still at 83% fail. It is a level 8 spell, but how could I cast Crystal Spear (if I wanted to spend the slots/low range) at 4% fail with NO Earth magic and then, this... In my head I know it should take quite a bit more Transloc logically but... I'm a little surprised at that.

Gained Clarity in Zig (potion), but still pretty short of potions overall. Could try Abyss but still no brilliant rN items (one ring, one dagger both on slots I hate to give up). My gut feels a touch too squishy about that zone.

Sleepy weekend so am going slow. Leaning toward finishing this one off. Will see.

Yes, went for the early (easy) escape. Took out a pan lord with firestorm/OOD and ran before a couple others could get close.

I enjoyed this character and felt it was sort of a waste of the amulet to end so soon but... Some of the other stuff could have been more ideal (rN items, spellset familiarity, and just more class-appropriate other artifacts). All in all happy to say I at least won with a conjurer on the short run for now. Maybe more to try later. 8-)

Mostly rehash, but quick impressions from this one:

EV rocks. Deep elves train it so much faster than Fighting, and I rarely felt like I needed heavy Armor at all - even without O's Armor spell. Of course, this is easier to say when nuking almost everything scary before it closes.

Fire Storm devastates the 3-rune game if you can get it. But relied on some pretty powerful Int artifacts to get it going carefree early enough.

Freezing Cloud is a pretty cool way to block OOFs' ranged fire (thank you wiki) -- although you may need to pick carefully to get enough punchy spells to also be able to shoot back through the clouds yourself. I had one good battle where the high-level summons whopped an OOF while I sat back behind a freezing cloud further down the corridor. Iron Shot also worked quite well in the end, although it took a few shots even with Battlesphere usually.

I still am wobbly about elf defenses. I really like artifact bucklers. But it takes focus to catch when to use the big defensive spells, if you are used to blasting away.

Again, Poison Arrow is really lethal against pretty much anything living in the 3-rune game. My new favorite Poison spell after the early game. I stopped using Bolt of Fire against giants completely. :o

This dungeon needed more shopping. (Shop/item drops are still so random sometimes?) This elf is going to have one really plush retirement!
