Anyone who studies animal behavior will tell you that it is a joke of a theory-it's very old(late 40s!), debunked science based on extremely flawed methodology(heavily based on the behavior of captive packs consisting of unrelated individuals, an error reflecting the once prevailing view that wild pack formation occurred in winter among independent wolves).
To be clear, dominance hierarchy do exist, but they vary wildly from animal to animal and the "alpha male" model does not accurately model even a single species, much less all mammals(and especially not humans).
Maybe we are talking about different things. I mean something like
Ethology is a rapidly growing field. Since the dawn of the 21st century, many aspects of animal communication, emotions, culture, learning and sexuality that the scientific community long thought it understood have been re-examined, and new conclusions reached. New fields, such as neuroethology, have developed.

It is not related to those old studies at all.
Edit. I spent much time on reading different articles about ethology several years ago, it was quite interesting and I got conclusion that we are still governed by the same instincts as ancient people. Not much has changed.
