If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

A bailey is an enclosed courtyard overlooked by the motte and typically surrounded by a wooden fence called a palisade. It was usually used as a living area by servants of the castle's lord. Also located inside the bailey would be a blacksmith, a miller, and most of the craftsmen typically required during the medieval period. A castle could have more than one bailey, sometimes an inner and an outer, such as at Warkworth Castle, where expansion of the castle led to enclosure of a new bailey with a wall. Alternatively, the multiple baileys could flank the motte, such as at Windsor Castle. The bailey was often directly connected to the ditch surrounding the motte. The bailey was often enclosed inside another wooden palisade and surrounding ditch to add an extra layer of protection. It was connected to the motte by a timber drawbridge, which could be separated from the bailey as a last defence mechanism. There was in many cases another drawbridge at the entrance into the bailey that could similarly be raised for protection. The bailey would typically contain a hall, stables for the horses and cattle, a chapel, and huts for the nobleman's people. There were often shops inside the bailey for local merchants.
Motte and bailey castles later evolved into Norman castles (also called the keep castle) that evolved later into even better Concentric castles.

Normally, when I've seen this bailey, I've been forced to retreat: mele characters can't hack that many orcs- especially with reaching, and mages don't have anywhere near enough juice to clear it yet, nor is there a safe place to heal.
Today though, I had a brand new randart penetrating crossbow from Trog, a pile of bolts, and a brother in arms to keep the orcs busy while I machine gunned them down.
Overall, I like the baileys. They're fair- you can tell right off the bat if they're too tough, and give you a chance to retreat. Sewers though, you can get halfway in before running into a frog or jelly you're too weak to kill, and too far from the exit to escape.
Worst thing I've had happen in a bailey: drank the eight plus stat potions, and then had the next potion turn out to cure mutation. Now I wait until I've test ID-ed the other potions before downing the all the boosters.

asdu wrote:Oh, and speaking of portals and loot therein: I just got into a wizlab (from Vaults:2) with a bunch of golems.
One of them was a freaking electric golem
I had no rElec but with a ton of luck I survived by the skin of my teeth.
The loot? Scrolls The best were 2 enchant weapon III
Basically all I got out of it was the XP from the electric golem and a big scare.
Worst. Portal. Ever. (no offense to whoever made it, but considering it's basically a suicide mission unless you happen to have rElec, its loot could use a little more bling)

Still wondering what the word means, so checking Wikipedia:
