Who's afraid of the big bad ancient lich?

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

Who's afraid of the big bad ancient lich?

Not me. I've only ever died to one once, and they only seem to be no. 182 on the akrasiac killers list

I tend to find that by the time I get to them, I can easily melee them / throwing net + stab them / OOD them.

Any thoughts?

maybe people don't die to them a lot because they are afraid of them

I know - I'm just being facetious - I do tend to get the heebie-jeebies whenever I see one. Just trying to generate a bit of debate about late game monster difficulty vs early game.

Orbs of fire are an easy peasy cakewalk, they're only 199 on that list

And Cerebov is number 458, with a kill rate of just 0.01%! That makes gnolls 525 times more dangerous!

(I am just kidding, by the way...)

But gnolls are overwhelmingly more dangerous. Gnolls appear on D:1 and D:2, where you have few or no identified consumables and a weak character. Cerebov only appears once, in a specific level in a specific place that you have no reason to visit unless you want 15 runes, and by the time it does make sense to visit that level you are certainly strong enough that there is no excuse for dying to Cerebov.

True - this is the point I was making with regard to ancient liches - by the time you're ready to take them on, they're easy. At the same time, I think the early game stats are skewed by relatively inexperienced players who don't know what they're doing, and possibly by experienced players who do know what they are doing, but are just playing loosely as they haven't invested much time in the game by that point, and may be just trying out a fun combo or a throwaway character.

It would be interesting to repeat the death rate statistics for the subset of games played by experienced players on a streak, and within this subset, take the ratio of people entering a particular level to the number of people dying on it. Any sequell gurus out there who can do that?

Most players on a streak play a LOT more "loosely" after early game than during it

I do that even when not on a streak, except when I am startscumming

Plus gnolls come in packs, hmm, now i want to see roving bands of cereboves... cerebovi? What is the plural here?

You make the late game great by building a wall between the late game and the early game. And you make the early game monsters build it.
