Remove Paralysis

(Yes, ALL paralysis, ALL sources).

Reasons:
  • There is nothing fun or interesting about dying because something with a 10-20% chance of inflicting a hex on you pretty much instantly killed you because of landing that hex.
  • Slow is enough of a penalty on berserk without a 10% chance of paralysis.
    • It's such a low and random chance it feels like "hax" when you die because of it.
  • Paralyzing enemies with wand or needles (especially needles on hell lords) is just broken completely. Turning the worst threat in the game into a harmless statue is a bit too broken.

Breakdown:
  • Just remove the status effect, period.
  • Remove Giant Eyeballs.
  • All enemies with the Spell (Paralyze) get it replaced with one or more of: {Confuse, Slow, Agony, Banish} Specifically:
    • Grinder: Slow, Agony.
    • Orc Sorcerer: Banish.
    • Vampire Knight: Confuse, Agony.
    • Great Orb of Eyes: Slow.
    • Rupert: Slow.
    • Sphinx: Slow.
    • Ereshkigal: Slow, Confuse.
    • Norris: Slow.
    • Erolcha/Ogre Mage/Wizard/Lich/Antique Lich: Any {Confuse, Slow, Agony, Banish} (Random).
  • Paralysis Needles are removed completely, for now confuse, sleep and slow needles are made more common to compensate.
  • Wands of Paralysis are removed completely, Confuse wands made more common.
  • Berserk cannot paralyze you after, if more severe than slow option is necessary, make it cause sleep (long term inactivity until something hits you).
  • Chaos Clouds cannot cause Paralysis.
  • Zin's Paralysis effect replaced with Sleep or Slow.
  • Ru's Paralysis replaced with Confuse or Slow.
  • Charms Paralysis miscast is replaced with Sleep.
  • Wasps and Hornets just cause Slowing, not paralysis.

It's definitely the player's fault if you decide to fight with an orc sorceror in plain sight with only MR+ and die from being paralyzed. I've been paralyzed a few times from orc sorcerors and not been killed from it, so it's not an instant death button if you manage your enemies.

If you die because you got paralyzed from berserk you'd probably die if you got slowed (since that implies there was a enemy dangerous enough to kill you next to you.)

Paralyzing any Lord with needles takes paralysis needles, which are rare and not guaranteed unless you follow Oka/Trog, and even then you'll probably get a single digit number, a huge amount of throwing skill (at least in the range of 20), and a well-enchanted blowgun (at least +4).

Even then, removing paralysis needles doesn't solve them being trivialized by needles, confusion needles are equally effective (Cerebov falls into the lava! You hear a sizzling sound.) The most powerful use of blowgun isn't paralyzing Lords, but disabling the fiends/sentinels that accompany them so they're non-threats (which can be done with confusion needles.) Even taking that into consideration, frenzy needles are also pretty effective against most Lords since a lot of them rely on their spells rather than melee for being a threat. If you want to prevent Lords from being trivialized by needles, the answer is to make them immune to needles.

Paralyzing regular enemies with needles is less of an issue since they're not guaranteed.

I disagree. It is fun and interesting to try to avoid getting paralyzed. Also, paralysis is not nearly always fatal. In fact, I don't usually die when I get paralyzed. Early Grinder is the biggest threat in this regard.

Maybe this is just an attempt at starting a myth or something, but it definitely isn't true (and is trivially falsifiable in wizmode).

This is from a recent realtime speedrun with several spectators, played on CXC. Well, the player didn't take the time to switch to ring of MR or to react more carefully. Strange ending at least, as the exit was maybe about 20 tiles away.

Paralysis is an excellent status effect, I've posted about this in the past but am too lazy to go find my posts now. Grinder is very bad, but the other enemies with paralysis are well-done, imo. Anyway other than Grinder every single paralysis death I have is clearly my fault.

Paralysis wands in the hands of enemies are very bad because paralysis is something you must preemptively play around, which you cannot do against wands. Additionally, putting paralysis on random enemies is very bad.

I don't mean to be that guy, but if I'm not mistaken, this is on the won't do list, and I definitely agree with it being there.

I personally think the turning to stone effect(drawing a blank on the name right now) is much more interesting, but paralysis is interesting in its own way(albeit frustrating).

I the way its currently being used is flawed and could use some serious improvement, but it fills a niche and accomplishes damaging the player without dealing damage to them directly(which is something the devs have expressed a lot of interest in encouraging). While I do agree that it has some flaws and can be frustrating, there is simply no other spell or effect that I know of that fits the bill of what paralysis wants to do, and that is the stun the player and steal moves away from them and limiting their maneuverability.

Say what you will, its a spell that has lead to a lot of interesting situations, and as frustrating as it is to die to it without having a chance to respond, I never once felt like I didn't deserve it for messing with an enemy I know could do that to me.

One possible way to improve paralysis though might be to make it a more common effect but reduce the duration to 3-4 turns to accomplish the same goal without causing as many infuriating deaths.
To all new players: Ignore all strategy guides posted on the wiki, ask questions in the Advice forum, players with lots of posts normally have the best advice.

Ok I got less lazy.

Petrification is not paralysis. In fact petrification is more like slow than it is like paralysis. Banishment is like paralysis except the things people complain about with paralysis are actually much more of a problem with banishment, even before you get into the problems with abyss.

(Now that we know that the original complaint was largely about post-berserk paralysis: that particular case isn't actually a good use of paralysis, so removing it would be fine.)

Part of the problem is that, with Stasis no longer existing, there are no quick solutions to paralyzing enemies. In most cases you can (and should) plan ahead and wear MR or fight in a way that they don't have LOS, but the chance for a Pan Lord to summon giant eyeballs and next turn get a 7-turn irresistable paralysis seems extremely unfair (if also extremely rare). The only way to avoid this would be to dig a killhole for every single panlord so that their summons won't be in LOS of you, or to have some sort of one-turn panic button like Zin's sanctuary or Lugonu's self-banish.

At the very least I would remove giant eyeballs' smite-targeted MR-ignoring paralysis, or remove them from the summon eyeballs spell.

I don't like panlords with paralysis (or new liches with paralysis) because you can't really play around the possibility they might have it (since it's so rare that they do) the same way you can with things like ogre mages (where it's much less rare). Paralysis is a very good status effect but it must be given to enemies very carefully.

It seems like there's a pretty general agreement that enemies with a very very low chance to have the ability to paralyze you (e.g. Pan Lords, enemies with a wand of paralysis) are bad and those cases should be removed. The arguments in flavor of paralysis all seem to revolve around the player being able to recognize it as a potential threat ahead of time and prepare for the possibility, and not suddenly finding yourself unexpectedly paralyzed by an enemy that normally can't do that.

There in general is an issue with random spellset creatures in that sometimes they are just plain broken.

Anecdotally, I had a Pan Lord with Haste (Self), Symbol of Torment and Glaciate that killed me in 3-4 turns during the orbrun. No way I could have prepared for that, even if I lnew the spells ahead of time, since it was during the orbrun, even Blinking away was impossible. Significantly worse than Lom Lobon.

On the flipside...I've had pan lords that did nothing but spam Summon Butterflies and Blink around like a Red Imp magician.

Can be WORST THING IN THE GAME, or completely harmless. it's just random.

Zin need not cause paralysis. He should still be able to cause a permanent effect equivalent to it, though. Instakills are fun.
