Dungeon Crawl Variants

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

Dungeon Crawl Variants

Not sure if it's right to post it here but OH HEY WHATEVER

Are there any notable Dungeon Crawl variants/branches/spinoffs/whatevers that I could look at? I'm willing to try pretty much anything, but what I am particulary interested in is something that makes DC more "oldschool" while preserving the new content - you see, every time a new version comes out I have a bit of mixed feelings - on one hand, awesome new gods/mobs/spells/etc., on the other, they frequently remove interesting gameplay mechanics that I love, such as say, old corrosion, old drain, item destruction, weight limits, etc.

So, are there any crawl variants that I should take a look at?

Re: Dungeon Crawl Variants

There is a "crawl nostalgia" somewhere : a version based on 0.15 or 0.14 but including the removed races/classes, and some of the mechanics.
I think it was playable on webtiles somewhere, but can't find it anymore :/

I'm not sure if this is just bait but whatever, check out nostalgia. Looks like the nostalgia downloads in this thread still work: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=11654&hilit=nostalgia
I don't think it's exactly what you're looking for, though.

Re: Dungeon Crawl Variants

Unlike many of the roguelikes that spun off from a classic, DCSS hasn't seen many (if any) fully fledged it's-its-own-game spin offs. As far as I'm aware Linley's Crawl didn't have many forks either, bar DCSS. It strikes me as odd that Crawl has managed to stay exclusive in a totally inclusive environment, but there's probably a reason for that.

Anyway, that's a longwinded... something. Check out Nostalgia (you will remember how lame many of those features were :D )
If you are offended by something I've posted, just PM me. It probably wasn't intentional.

There's this: Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (Extra Hearty Edition), but it seems to be dead.

I don't know if pizza tornado exists or is just a tavern/irc in-joke.

At one time, crawl-lite existed and had some good ideas.

Zot Defense and Sprint are around.

Re: Nostalgia: no, not quite it. Doesn't restore as much features as I'd like and most of what it does restore is less "somewhat unbalanced but fun" that it needs to be and more "hilariously unbalanced and stupid".

Re: DCSS(EHE): Now this is much more like it! Thank you very much! Unfortunately, as you said, this does seem to be dead.

Re: Bloax: Still barely holding on the glorious trainwreck that my life is.

He's not alone, though. I liked a lot of the old things.

I still think Crawl is a really good game, but I liked a game that was challenging in different ways and not designed so much around dealing/preventing damage. I recognize the consensus is very much the other way.

I enjoyed HexCrawl a while back, but that's like 8 versions ago now.
The above post is for entertainment purposes only. If you think anything I ever say is backed by fact, or if you cite things I've said in any argument ever, you are insane.

Re: Dungeon Crawl Variants

Why not with every new release also make an ingame alternative, Like DCSS Nostaliga with stuff that hopefully dont take much programming, like including all races that were removed over the last few years (Djinnis, LavaOrc´s, Sludge Elfs, MD´s, Gnome´s and beyond and).
Then again, I´m a computer idiot and might just not realize how much coding that would require.

You might as well ask someone "Why not duct-tape a potato to your ceiling?" Because it would serve no purpose other than wasting their time.

It varies between "not a lot, but more than you might think" and "you literally have to re-code whatever it is from scratch." Things very recently removed are often still present in the code, at least partially, but often there's a bit more work required than simply re-enabling them -- you'll probably have conflicts versus any changes made since the removal, and you'll have to resolve those. Stuff more than a few years old will exist only as git history, and will have bit-rotted to the point of being useless; handling a merge would be as much or more work than just completely redoing it.

I might as well put my faith in some of the Forks happening now.

Re: Dungeon Crawl Variants

There the DCSS:CA edition: https://github.com/jeremygurr/dcssca

It's totally caught up with the latest DCSS trunk changes, in addition to having and maintaining a number of significant variations of its own. It has a number of fun features such as summons that last as long as you have magic points left, double capacity inventory without needing any extra keystrokes, return of a highly altered Djinni species, addition of several new mutations, etc.

You can build and run it locally, or play it on: https://crawl.project357.org/

Re: Dungeon Crawl Variants

Man, I tried git several times and it worked perfectly, just the way I wanted, until a new patch came and messed it all up time and again. I could never get past that.

I played around with Sandmans DCSS fork as well as DCSS Light. I must say DCSS Circus Animals sounds very interesting. Wish there was an exe file but oh well.
Tried an online game but the lagg was way too heavy.

Thx for the tip though :)

Re: Dungeon Crawl Variants

I set up an experimental web tiles version that DCSS:CA can be tried on, for those too far from CPO for it to perform well. Of course, if it gets too popular, this one won't perform well either. But it's worth a try.
