Help a MuCK

Anyone have any ideas how to ascend a MuCK without clarity now? Is it just pure luck in not getting confused-to-death? I've had various gods wrath easier to survive than chain confusion. I know the 'chaos' is part of the CK...but losing hours of play with zero escape options is getting frustrating. Surely someone out there knows something I don't that'll help here. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Help a MuCK

That depends on how much you're willing to scum. If you enjoy xomscumming (it's fun!), I recommend the following:
Blade wrote:Blade's complete MuCK guide:
1. Tab through D:1 and D:2. It doesn't really matter what skills you train until you find an evocable, at which point you should switch to evocations. May as well train polearms until then.
2. Go up to D:1 downstairs. Press 5 again and again.
WHEN the whole level becomes dangerous -> hang out on d:2 instead
3. Repeat this process basically as far as you feel like it down to about d:6 and temple and so forth. The temple or cleared sewer/ossuaries are probably the best places to hang out, since no monsters spawn there.
WHEN Xom gives you a rod, start using it to kill dudes far more dangerous than you could normally handle.
WHEN you are satisfied with your gifts (I usually like having around 3 rods--at least one that summons creatures--and whatever other junk he gives me), go to step 4.
4. Proceed with the game as normal, training mainly evocations until 20 or so and then melee skills and defenses
5. Don't die. If you've done steps 1-4 right, you probably won't have to worry about this for a while, because the right rods will take out basically everything before you have to worry about it.

Handling situations that pop up:
IF a dangerous monster spawns nearby -> go downstairs immediately, go up to different staircase, keep going (unless you have a cool rod and can just take it out. This happens also)
IF Xom teleports you -> return directly to downstairs and keep going. This happens all the time and usually doesn't matter.
IF Xom summons monsters around you (usually imps, not very bad at all) -> go downstairs
IF Xom attacks you directly -> usually you don't die. If you do... ah, well. MuCKs are pretty expendable. Return to step 1.
IF Xom abysses you... honestly, this is usually your biggest threat. If you have a couple of rods, a bit of luck, and are at least xl10, you can survive. Otherwise, return to step 1.
IF Xom confuses you, hope not to die. A lot easier in 0.16 than earlier in Crawl, because confusion doesn't last as long.
IF you get bored, realize why pressing 5 over and over is actually fun and keep going.

Bored Xom is surprisingly docile most of the time, especially when there are no monsters around. Like I said above, abyssing is the biggest threat, and a few other random things. It takes a good few tries to get going and to get used to MuCK patterns, but through the wonders of xomscumming I have 15-runed a MuCK (+zig!), streaked 2 MuCKs, and won 3 overall, so it has been far more reliable than it has any right to be.

To add more confusion-specific stuff: it's really a matter of preparing as much in advance as possible. Stay in safe situations. Don't get surrounded. Just basically use normal safety measures, but more so. Distortion unwield can help. Decks used to be usable; I don't think they are in current Crawl. Summons can help mitigate the risk in advance, especially if you have rods or other evocables. Confusion is pretty reasonable to handle if you've scummed a lot; much less so if you're going through the dungeon like normal.

Good luck! I love MuCKs, as frustrating as they can get. You can do some fun things with them.

Abandon Xom for Ash.

Dont go to spider unless way overleveled.

Do wear Mr+ items.

As for orc wizards; well since your werent guarantueed clarity when encountering orc wizard first that risk has not sufficiently changed.

Re: Help a MuCK

Well...4 tries at muck farming...and 4 trips to the abyss. Final trip at least let me see Lugonu's altar before I was chased down by a pack of flying skulls...so I switched. None of the 4 CK's were gifted a rod. But the one who's still alive (with 2 runes now) did manage to buy one with the 1500 gold Xom dropped on me. Still a long ways to go, but at least I've gathered twice as many runes as my previous MuCKs.

Why no distortion weapon? They're good when you want something gone fast.

Re: Help a MuCK

Haven't found a demon whip yet. It'll happen.

Ok, it didn't happen. Died in Vault 1 to Norris' smites.
5th attempt at farming ended with a trip to the abyss again. I'm thinking maybe the likelihood of Abyssing from Xom has been increased? Or his gifts have been decreased? Or I'm just incredibly unlucky at 100% abyss in 5 tries.

Switching to Gozag...got me abyssed.
Ho hum

Next farming attempt: Xom flat out killed me. 40 pts of damage to my 29hp self.
Next farming attempt: Abyssed...in sight of an exit and an anti-magic morningstar. Farming continues. Still zero evocables gifted from Xom (save a stone of tremors that allowed me to even train evocation on D5)-3 balls of lighting conjured on top of me. All 3 would have insta-exploded, but I only got to see 2 of them.
Hasted berserked ogre. Confused after shafting into an orc horde.
Next farming attempt: 10 arrows of flame, 11 silver bolts, 13 bolts of frost, meat ration, beef jerky, plain leather armour, 15 poison arrows, came up stairs in contact with 3 harpies. Dead.
Next: artifact robe. +0 corrode rc++ rf+, relec, dex+3 (gotta figure out how to be a caster =/), scroll enchant armour, summoned shadows between farming session. Dead.
Last farming attempt: 39 gold, 31 gold, cursed +0 spear, plain robe, +0 gloves, disc of storms, 3 javelins of returning, wand of iceblast, fan of gales, +0 long sword, 1030 gold, meat ration, 13 bullets of flame, upstairs next to a fire dragon. Dead.

Maybe MuCK is gonna be my white whale.

Re: Help a MuCK

Heh. Yeah, MuCK farming is definitely not a one-and-done deal. It probably reflects poorly on how much weight I place on individual characters, but I went through several hundred MuCKs doing various farming experiments before I got around to winning one. If you're actively trying to win each game, it definitely shouldn't take hundreds, but it may take a bit.

It's hard to say for sure, but yes, abyssing rates may(?) have increased. My most successful MuCK games have generally involved 1-2 abyssings per game; if Xom has given you enough wands/rods by then, you have a decent shot in abyss.

Re: Help a MuCK

Managed to squeak a win on my 230th MuCK. Not my lowest score, but pretty damn close. 3 rods of innacuracy, a shadow and a cloud (Love the cloud) made short work of most things. The eveningstars (anti-magic & frost) handled the rest.

Never again will I play a MuCK =/.

Thanks all for the advice and well-wishing.
Only a MuAS left for...greatermummy I guess? Win every class as a mummy...whatever.

Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell’s heart I stab at thee; for hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool! and since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee, thou damned whale! Thus, I give up the spear!
