Lethally poisoned and no curing. What do I do?

This makes the second time this run that a black mamba has been right there when I turned a corner. I hate those bastards so much. Anyway, I have six health and I chugged my last curing potion earlier so I don't know what I can do to wait this out.

Also, anyone know why I just reached ** with Ashenzari despite amulet of faith + 8 dungeon floors?

Edit: Whoops, wrong board. Hopefully you guys won't judge me too much for posting here. lol

Re: Lethally poisoned and no curing. What do I do?

Off the top of my head....

There's an odd interaction with slowing, but even if something is possible, I imagine it could only help with 6 -> 0, but the counter says you'll be poisoned down to -1.

You could read the unidentified scroll and hope to acquire a wand of healing.

You can quaff haste and try to find a potion in unexplored territory. Use the scrolls of blinking to move even faster; maybe save it for when you find the potion. Use a teleport scroll to move away from where you are now, if there is no nearby unexplored territory.

(query: I'm assuming haste will give you more actions before you die; I'm not actually sure that's how it works)

Re: Lethally poisoned and no curing. What do I do?

This is why I always carry ambrosia until I'm nicely packed with curing...

Dr = no bound body armour slot. Also it looks like you have an empty offhand. So your piety gain is bound to be considerably slower than if you were fully bound.

edit: I may be hallucinating on the whole unfitting armour dealio, that could have no impact on your piety. It's late.

The estimate seems none too accurate ... I think I had a -2 character live at some point not long ago.

Re: Lethally poisoned and no curing. What do I do?

Lig pots could be good to carry if you are low on healing stuff. Personally I would zap the slowing wand at yourself and then read the unknown scroll. exploring at practically no HP is super dangerous and you probably wouldn't reach the end of los before poison does its work.

If this was my game, I'd try to read that scroll and hope it's acquirement and hope it gives me Wand of Heal Wounds.

Otherwise, you're dead. Good luck with a new character.

Re: Lethally poisoned and no curing. What do I do?

I had this experience where I survived a lethal poisoning after slowing myself with a wand. I'm still not sure though if that had anything to do with surviving. It was possibly just an inaccurate lethality estimate.

But definitely read the unidentified scroll first. If it happens to be summoning and you summon some orcs, read duvessa's hint from the thread I linked.

Use the scrolls of blink to try to get somewhere you haven't explored yet. Hope for a potion in range. Chance is slim.

Doesn't breadswinging still work? Slow yourself if possible, then swing a ration? I'm not sure it'd be enough to overcome 6 -> -1, but worth a shot.

I...

I have no idea what this is, but please, please enlighten me. I feel like my life is really missing something vital not knowing about something as beautifully named as "breadswinging" in the context of lifesaving techniques.

Attacking while wielding bread is slow. You don't die until the end of your turn. The hope is to do it at the last moment and prolong your life enough to regenerate an extra 2 HP.

One is possible, particularly if your scheduled death is just before you were about to gain your next HP. In any case,I'm pretty sure the OP's MaxHP isn't enough to get a regeneration rate large enough to regenerate 2 HP.

Beautiful, beautiful mechanics abuse. This sort of thing is why I love roguelikes.

Does breadswinging even work? The whole reason we breadswing is because you regen more per turn; your per AUT regen rate doesn't change. Poison works by auts, not turns, I assume??

I had assumed poison works by auts as well, and that you were just looking to prolong your last turn; I hadn't even considered the possibility that it works by turns, in which case you could hope to get significantly more regeneration. I don't know which way it goes.

I think poison works by turns so it's not weird for spriggans and nagas?

wait...but it would be weird for spriggans and nagas if it worked by turns, as opposed to auts, right?

Re: Lethally poisoned and no curing. What do I do?

ITT: Everyone's heard of the concepts but no one is really sure if it still works that way/ever worked that way/how crawl manages 'time' (which is fake time).

Sadly, I'm included in this group, and don't know if it actually still works. I think it does.

Anyways, the overview of breadswinging, since Clownie asked:

Regeneration of health is based on how many auts your last action took, so if you do a slow action, you'll regenerate more per turn, and can win the game in fewer turns. It's thus ideal to do this when you are speedrunning, but players complain about it because it's a lot more tedious than simply pressing 5 to rest. I don't know if this changes the way poison works, because poison damage should also work on an auts-passed-by-last-action, but I haven't ever looked at that code. It's possible people are taking a speedrunning-save-turns trick and trying to apply it to poison, which doesn't work? Or that it mostly doesn't work but could work on just the final turn only, as Hurkyl mentioned.

Funny side fact: While taking a 15 aut action such as breadswinging always resulted in getting 150% regeneration compared to a 10 aut action, this was NOT the case with walking. If the action you took was walking, then you regenerated 10 aut worth, even if you were a naga. I'm not sure about spriggans (did they get 6aut or 10 of regen?). This was orginally done to prevent nagas from suffering 14 auts of hunger on each step (the hunger/regen were handled together), and I believe it also applied to Chei (a 20 aut chei step regened 10 aut health). This has been removed, you now regen 20 aut per chei step. So if you really want to survive lethal poison, just go chei, and instead of resting, walk. This is why chei gives the "slows and strengthens your metabolism" to protect against hunger/poison.

In the wake of njvack's comment, I realize there are two ways "works by turns" could be taken to mean. Described for a simplified version of poison, they are:

  • Posion does N damage every turn
  • Poison does N*T damage every turn that lasts for T auts

I have assumed the latter.

Ah, I see...that's exactly how I imagine that poison would work, too - it at least seems to be the most 'fair' way for all races, regardless of speed.

Fairly sure this is the case. And it is also the case for clouds. The longer you're in a cloud, the more it will hurt you.

Is that why you can't change armour or memorize spells while poisoned? 15 turn action would be better...(put on a CPA)...10 turns to memorize a level 9.

Actually, the way I understand this, the length of your action measured in auts would not really influence the overall damage - IF poison damage is calculated the way we/I assume (N damage per aut, multiplied by T auts per action, with the resulting damage N*T being applied at the end of your turn).

So you would receive poison damage equal to 15 auts after 1 action that lasted for 15 auts (e.g. put on a CPA), or poison damage equal to 10 auts after an action that lasted 10 auts (e.g. memorizing your level 9 spell). Hence, you would receive the same amount of overall damage - unless health regeneration works differently (e.g. in turns, not considering the actual auts - but that would make longer actions worse for your overall regeneration, which would be very counter-intuitive as well).

Being unable to change armour or learn spells seems to me like a protection for the player, so that he does not get killed while performing a very lengthy action (if he did not yet realize he is lethally poisoned) - but this is of course just an assumption.

Mechanically, I understand changing armor is a "multi-turn" action; it doesn't take one long turn, but instead some number of consecutive shorter turns, so this wouldn't work to extend your lifespan when lethally poisoned.
