Damn smite...

I've been playing for about a week now. I'm not really new to roguelike games so I'm not having too much of a tough time. I've finally managed to kill Sigmund every time I come across him. Well really, any uniques. But my biggest fear are the damn Orc Priests.

You could see a giant frog, 3 orc priests, an orc wizard and an orc.

I was worshipping the Orc god but I JUST got ahold of him and didn't have enough time to raise the piety. Then I ran into an Orc Warrior and his gang. I took out a few of them then I seen the wizard and priests crawl into the scene... I was already pretty hurt. Activated my scroll of teleport and started to run. Got hit with a spell. Then. The smite. T .T These guys have been the bane of my existence. It's gotten to the point where I get scared when I see an orc, cause I'm worried there's a priest behind him. Sometimes. They go smite happy on me. Sometimes they try and melee me. Any tips on what I can do to avoid these guys? They've taken out my wizards, my summoners, hell even my troll berserker fell victim to them. I guess it's my fault since I get careless sometimes and then they show up. But my morgue is littered with the "blasted by an orc priest." I just got over the sigmund hurdle too. :(

This the appropriate response to orcs in the early game. Try to lure them away and kill them one at a time so that if there is a priest there aren't 5 orcs in the way when you charge it.

I believe Trog's Hand helps you resist smites, if you're playing a berserker.

Re: Damn smite...

You probably never have a problem killing one orc. Or even two at a time. But after you've killed that one or two, you see a couple more, so you kill them. Oh, and here's one more, kill him. And just about then the priest comes around the corner, and you are smite smite dead.

So the key is to kill one orc, or that one plus one buddy, and then back off. Don't advance, retreat and rest up. Go upstairs if you need to. Then come back, move up till you've got just one orc, and pull him away from his gang, and kill him all by himself. Always keep a cleared space so you can go upstairs if you need to.

Then, when only the orc priest is dead, he'll be easy enough to kill, when you start from full hp and mp.

My problem is they roll in packs, behind doors, or around corners. Most of the time I find myself retreating across an entire level just to avoid getting smited and hit with the glowing orcish mace.
Example:
Image

This wasn't so bad. It was only 1 warrior orc and 45 normal orcs... > .> I just led them into a hallway and let the imps have a field day. But. In my earlier post, I had ran up. Led an orc warrior into a hallway, and after killing him they showed up and just ranged me to death. What exactly will pull an enemy away without dragging the entire group with them? I've managed to do it was LOS, but in the open area they came from, it was a no go.

Re: Damn smite...

Orc priests smite less frequently when they are in hand to hand combat, so if you can get some alone time with the little rotter, you can put him down pretty easily.

I didn't wanna make a new thread for this but... Is it common to find steam dragon armor on D1?

Not common, but good D:1 finds are certainly not unusual.

Orc priests have low MR, so they're also vulnerable to wands. Your polymorph wand might have saved you.

But orcs cast pain sometimes, and the magic resistance from Trog's Hand helps against that. Pain needs line of sight, and it can hit invisible orc wizards that are between you and the priest.

So if you aren't standing next to a priest (so it will hit you instead of smiting), try to stand where it has a clear path to you so it might cast pain that you can resist. If there are orcs or statues in the way, all it has left is smite.

Re: Damn smite...

Well. I decided to make a Felid Crusader and I'm currently living off of the berserk spell. I've found 4 spell books so far. And I've been able to melee a hill giant to death. And I've been VERY wary of orc priests thus far. What level should I be to venture into the lair? I still haven't went into the orc mines. Though I should but equipment is useless to me aside from the rings and amulets. I managed to nab an amulet of resist mutation early on. And bought an amulet of anger or some mess like that.

@minmay. I've figured out that a combination of stealth and magic dart seems to work wonders. Even when the enemy orcs shout. They just sit around like jackasses and the one that got hit comes running.

Ah ok. That makes sense. Since nothing is going to be branding flaming swords or daggers of venom.

And btw.

Use your invisibility potion. Killer bees can't see invisible, right? You can just run away. And/or use your teleport scroll. Bees have a little trouble hitting things with your EV, so you'll probably live until it goes off.

I just threw down on my swift and led them to a staircase with only one open square. Trained up on some mephetic cloud and had fun. :D
Also, I dunno if it's a bug or what but a lot of the times when I've used invisibility potions, the enemies still chased me down.

Ahhhh. That makes sense now. Oh and Rupert... I ran into him and he had a +2 +1 triple sword of slicing... I dunno what I'm gonna do without mephetic cloud later on. It was only thanks to that spell that I even killed him.
Also:Image

Hehe. :) Wonder if he's any good like this.
Actually. Just pitted him against a wyvern. It didn't touch him and he melee'd it to death. XD

Rupert makes a generally awesome zombie minion, even though he doesn't go berserk any more :)

But we're getting way off-topic now...
