CSDC Season 4 Results and Standings (updated)

Competition Information
Spoiler: show
CSDC is a competition that aims to fill a Crawl niche not currently filled by the biannual version release tournaments. The idea is for players to compete by trying to do as well as possible in a game of Crawl with one attempt only; if you die, that challenge is over (thus "sudden death", though you may - will - also die suddenly). This competition is a lower time commitment event that aims to challenges players, while simultaneously encouraging unusual characters and play styles that you might not normally consider.

In order to signup, you can just post in this thread, or send me a PM. There is no limit to the number of people allowed to sign up.
*IMPORTANT*: If the username you use for Crawl games is different from your forum name, please also include the username you plan to play games with. Only games played on that username will be counted for CSDC games.

Competition Rules:
*Note: Rules and format subject to change until the competition starts. Check back here for updates.
  Code:
   Format
1   Each challenge consists of playing a randomly chosen Crawl race/class combo (e.g. DsTm). A new race/class combo will be announced on Monday morning (EST) each week of the competition. All players have 2 weeks to finish a game using that combo.
2   You get ONE attempt to play each combo. The goal is to advance as far as possible (and win!) in each game, scoring points by reaching various in-game milestones. See "Scoring" below for details on earning points.
3   Each challenge has an optional bonus challenge in addition to the race/class combo. Each bonus will have two tiers; the second tier is more difficult and worth more points.
4   Additionally each challenge includes a list of four gods. A bonus point can be earned upon reaching ****** piety with one of the listed gods (but only if it is the first god worshipped that game).
5   The season consists of 7 challenges total (i.e., 7 different combos). The final week will have additional bonus challenges for extra points.
6   One redo per week is allowed if player XL < 5 (i.e., no redo once you hit XL 5). The highest score of the two games counts towards your score.
7   Each player's lowest weekly score will be dropped at the end of the challenges (does not affect miscellaneous points).
8   The player with the highest cumulative score champion (after dropping each player's lowest score).
Tiebreakers are (in order): Highest dropped score, most points from all weekly (not one-time) bonuses, highest in-game challenge score.

   Restrictions
1   All games must be played online in TRUNK. Any logged server is allowable (CAO, CSZO, CLAN, CBRO, CDO, CKR).
2   Playing the same race/class combo simultaneously on more than one server is not allowed. However, it is okay to practice each combo offline or using an alternate account; only the first game played each week on your designated account will be counted towards your score.
3   Each race and class will be selected no more than one time during the competition (no repeat races or classes).

Scoring:
  Code:
Weekly points (can be earned once per challenge):
1   Kill a unique:                                           +1 pt
2   Enter a multi-level branch of the Dungeon:               +1 pt
3   Reach the end of any multi-level branch (includes D):    +1 pt
4   Champion a listed god (from weekly list):                +1 pt
5   Collect a rune:                                          +1 pt
6   Collect 3 or more runes in a game:                       +1 pt
7   Win a game                                               +1 pt
8   Complete a Tier I bonus:                                 +1 pt
9   Complete a Tier II bonus*:                               +2 pts

*Note, you score Tier II points in addition to Tier I, for a total of 3 possible points from bonuses.
*Each week is worth a maximum of 10 points. Week 7 will have additional bonuses, for a total of 20 points.

One-time points (can be earned only once per season):
1   Win a game with 15 runes:                                +3 pts
2   Win a game in under 50,000 turns:                        +3 pts
3   Enter Zot at XL 20 or lower:                             +3 pts
4   Collect the Orb within 100 turns of entering Zot:5       +5 pts
5   Win a game without entering Lair:                        +7 pts
6   Win a game with zero melee weapon usage:                 +3 pts
6   Season high score:                                       +3 pts
7   Season min turn count win:                               +3 pts

*   Maximum of 30 one-time points possible during the season.

*   Total score is the sum of a player's weekly and one-time points, minus the lowest weekly score.
*   Maximum of 100 total points possible during the season (73 weekly + 27 one-time).

Changes from Season 3:
  Code:
*   Swapping gods is permitted after getting six stars of a listed god's piety. You can still only get the bonus once.
*   Eliminated divisions
*   Added a +3 one-time bonus for a purely non-melee character. (You can still wield any weapon, but are not allowed to hit with unarmed or any melee weapon class. Bread-swinging and beating things to death with ammo-less slings is still permitted.)

Sure, sign me up. I know I won't be much competition to many of the players here, but maybe knowing it's for a competition will make me play more carefully.

Re: Crawl "Sudden Death" tournament Season 4, redneck editio

My crawl name is (also) tedric, and I almost exclusively play on CBRO.

Can we get some clarity on the "no-melee" challenge? I assume you will look at the action count tables and exclude anyone who has a non-zero listing for Sbl/Lbl/M&F/Axe/Stave/Polearm -- which would mean it's OK to wield melee weapons as resistance sticks, and to use rods and enhancer staves, as long as you don't hit anything (even plants!) with them. Does "unarmed combat" count, or is the intent to exclude only wielded items? What if you "clumsily bash" something with a launcher or other item not normally meant for melee?

6 Season high score (in-game, per division): +3 pts
7 Season min turn count win (per division): +3 pts

If seasons are gone, these bonus point descriptions should be reworked.

Haven't played crawl in a while, but I'll give it a go.

I had my irc bot, Kramell, set up last time to track csdc points and stuff on irc (channel ##csdc on freenode). Not sure if I'll have time but I might be able to help you out if you're interested. I imagine manually adding up everyones scores could get pretty tedious pretty fast.

I think WalkerBoh used queries on the ##crawl bot, Sequell, when he was adding up scores for the early CSDCs. I can help with that f your'e not familiar with Sequell, since it would be a lot quicker than reading through the log files of all the games.

Sure, I'll try to give this a go -- though I can't promise how much I play the latter half of the tournament, what with /dev/null/nethack.

Unarmed is a nogo. Launcher, bread ration, etc. bashing is fine so that you can actually kill firewood. It's still fine even if you manage to stack up 15 slaying and use it as your primary damage source, since clearly you have made adequate sacrifices to RNGesus. Wielding a statstick is fine. Wielding an enhancer staff is fine, but using it's melee isn't.

I'm prepared to be lenient if you accidentally hit something 5 times with your staff of air or whatever.

I think it might help, but I've never used IRC; is there a web interface to sequell somewhere? And yeah, a bit of help formatting those queries would be immensely helpful. Edit: found web interface.

Is the +3 non-melee character bonus per week, or just once in season 4? Also chequers is right above about the descriptions needing to be edited, but it's because divisions are gone, not seasons :)

You should be able to play on CPO. These are the servers tracked by the Sequell bot btw (it's easy to get information on games played on them):
  Code:
USA: {cao}, {cszo}, {cbro}; EU: {cdo}, {cue}, {cxc}; KR: {cwz}; JP: {lld}; AU: {cpo}

If you're interested, come check out the channel ##crawl-aus on freenode IRC too :D

byrel: my crawl name is simply "Kramin" btw, I should have specified before sorry :?

I considered broadening it to allow 0.16 as well, but... I feel like it's a pretty big power difference for evocations and necromancers, plus there are a couple speedrunning nerfs in trunk (notably -ctele) which would make the couple competitive one-time points only achievable in 0.16.

Any input?

I think 0.16 is the all-time worst version of Crawl (shadow traps, you know), so that wouldn't help :D

I prefer 0.15, but I guess there's no way to include that. Playing Trunk is OK.

I'm in. Slight recommendation:

6 One redo per week is allowed if player XL < 5 (i.e., no redo once you hit XL 5). The highest score of the two games counts towards your score.

6 One redo per week is allowed if player XL < 10 (i.e., no redo once you hit XL 10). Your score is the average of the two scores.

I don't see the need to punish the player for the first game. The whole point of the redo is to help mitigate really bad luck, not to effectively halve someone's score if they win the game after getting screwed by a D:1 adder.

Eh, just a suggestion, don't care much either way. Just would probably make the beginning a bit more suspenseful.
