Coulnd't hope for a better early game weapon. Found by my axe-wielding GhWn^Kiku with melee tendencies - nicely filling out missing resistances, and I have M+F cross-training to be able to use it.

Not very. I got one from Crazy Yiuf's hut once.

For a Spriggan.

On the good side, it was something like +5, and it had +Invis.

On the bad side, a Spriggan with a hammer.

After splatting a few DEFE in a row I decide to try an OgBe and come across

+0 Maxwell's Etheric Cage (RegenMp, *Contam, rElec, MP+4)

Never seen if before, but the RegenMp looks like something I woudnt mind trying if only I could wear headgear :( . Seems like the best stuff drops for the characters that cannot use it.

Yeah, raising some armor skill isn't a bad idea with that, just like any other decent body armor. The +2str and -2dex is nothing to make a big deal about, you're probably talking about less than 1 damage of change anyway. I certainly wouldn't change any plans regarding what weapon to use.

Spells would be a bit harder, and it's always a good idea to train a weapon skill, but I wouldn't abandon any plans to use spells over this.

If I found that thing early on a character who was low on STR, I'd take more STR on levelups until I had around 10-12, and that's probably the only change I'd make. I guess if you're currently depending on conjurations for killing stuff you might want to put off wearing it for a bit, but it doesn't sound like that from your description.

Oh, and obviously you want some source of rC to offset the penalty.

I would use this even if i could not offset the cold vulnerability. And also I'd start training armour ofc even if it isn't tengu's kinda thing. It has +blink to get away from, if cold using melee opponents get too close. So keep blinking and shoot everything with xbow. I wouldn't switch to bows although I don't know how much investment you have in crossbows or how many bolts you do have. If you have under 30 then reconsider. Unenchanted shortbow's damage starts to get underpowered VERY quickly, so some decent melee weapon is a better idea than bows (if you got one).

Just a minor investment in Evo will make that +blink better. Just watch out for Fannar and centaurs with freezing ammo/brand.

If you get killed by a wand of cold, that's just awful luck.

Edit: Jesus christ this was an AIR ELEMENTALIST who gets -2 STR from this thing.. I think your STR will lead into some nasty attack penalties. AC upgrade is so significant that I'd probably still do it but you'd better hear the guys who are excellent with numbers. Any numbermen there online? Help the guy.

I was originally planning to transition into XBows so I was raising STR anyway. I just went AA for earlygame purposes.

Anyway; I went down a staircase; found myself in a pack of Orcs including 2 Priests; got insta-confused by a Wizard before I could go back up said stairs and chainsmited to death. [Tengu's low HP not helping]

Holy crap.

Found this bad boy on an Acquirement Scroll in the first floor of lair. I'm going sword and board fighter with one-handed long blades, so this is pretty much the perfect weapon. I quaffed benemut and got clarity, so the single negative feature isn't even relevant to me.

This is proving to be my favorite character in a long time. DsGl^Qazlal, picked up the Shield of the Gong as well. I've got Powered by Death and Mana Shield, so I'm an enormous tank just slashing at everything coming at me.

That is one of the few -slay items I would consider wearing in some situations, like if you had a slay +4 or more ring...

Had both of these on a recent HuGl of Ash

the cursed ring "Naech" {Int+4 Slay+5 Stlth+}
the ring of Winter {+Blink rF++ MR+}

Ran into Satyr in shaoals. Got all kinds of messed up. Put to sleep and a sea snake did 58 damage to me and killed me. :( Very sad night.

It is not as disappointing as +3 boots (-cast, MR+, Int+3) which my pure caster MuVM found before Lair. It preferred to use no boots.

I really need MR and I cannot use blink in danger due to -scroll anyway.

Well I don't know that particular situation but you could probably have leap or haste away.
But with a char who has already enough resist like that I probably wouldn't use it unless having semi infinite source of haste

I don't have haste as spell and I am trying to save scrolls of recharging for wand of teleport because I cannot read scrolls when in danger.

I'm playing a mage-based Naga who already found an Elec Whip; so it's not that good for me; but if you found this on an Orc; or any melee really; it would be great. Berzerkitis isn't great but it's not exactly bad on the types who'd want this.

Also the axe of Extinguishment giving rC++ and Flame Branded. Most inappropriate name.

The hand axe is not great unless you use it for resists and sInv.
