novelty characters

I once made a character with old tukima's as an ogre with okawaru and lots of gifted GSCs, with haste.

The GSC army was quite robust, but even with haste they were too slow to be very helpful.

Any other fun/good/bad/new/old novelty character ideas?

Re: novelty characters

I've recently been on a kick for pretty bad but sort of good in a strange way characters, and played:

Staff of earth minotaur. It hurt that I happened to find a really good Lajatang right before finding the staff of earth, but rules are rules man. This one can be annoying if you can't find a staff of earth - I got lucky and actually found it fairly easily.
DDNe ^ Chei - no vampiric weapons, no racial recharging wands, only use vampiric draining/heal wounds for healing. You can recharge your wand with a scroll.

Also I'm not entirely sure if it should count, but ogre transmuter who uses unarmed sort of applies. Probably never as good as a GSC, but statue form + unarmed works very well with them if you just pretend GSC's don't exist.

I'm still looking for more novelty ideas. I may end up doing a haunt mummy if I can manage to stand early game mummy, after people talking about it as summon butterflies++. I haven't used haunt before, but from what I understand of it, the sickness sounds really annoying, has that changed? Can I do haunt as a primary offensive on a non-mummy race? Or if you have any other novelty builds, let me know.

Re: novelty characters

I have played a lot of different ogres, but never a transmuter. I used to love sludge elves, they made great transmuters and weren't merfolk (which I hate) so it makes me super sad that they're gone. but yeah never ogre transmuters. enhancer staves as your main source of damage is certainly novelty. I would imagine a staff of air might work better, but I suppose for whatever reason you chose earth before the game started.

Re: novelty characters

I played an OgTm of Ru who sacrificed both Armour and Dodging. Fortunately it found hydra/statue form later so it was playable even late game.

Re: novelty characters

Pickled - I don't know how novel these are:
1. HO or DD of Zin, leveling Invoc ~2:1 to your main weapon skill. Spamming Recite stays fun the whole game. I salted Dissolution!
2. It relies on chance or a lot of mutated meat, but breathe poison gas is outrageously strong. A Naga only needs one level of the spit poison mutation for it. Xom would probably give it to you, but I read you're holding a grudge against him :)
3. Someone posted a TeBe win recently. It never occurred to me to throw away the great casting abilites of a Tengu, but they do have two aux attacks. You might start as TeFi for the shield.
4. I tried Berder's Spriggan blaster caster, which worked well with very high Spellcasting.
5. OpFi with Gozag for jewellery shops worked great for me on my first try. It only took Tasonir about five tries :)

Tasonir - There was a post recently characterising Haunt as something you use to tie up enemies while you kill them with something else. The Haunt summon list is so weak.

Sustain abilities ring does nothing on a demigod now.

Awwwww you're right. And looking at the code changes, they capped sustain abilities at 1 level last year :( I'll edit out my suggestion.

Yeah, that's what I'll play around with. I'm not limiting myself to only haunt, if it can't kill fast enough I'll use other summons. I'm fairly sure I've never once successfully cast Call dragons, with my normal hate of summoners. Have one going fairly well so far, early dagger of venom was pretty nice. I was killing things effectively with it before getting the +5 ring of slaying, but of course the ring of slaying was a rather nice addition. Having rF to get my mummy back to neutral was good, and a regen amulet on top is making me start to feel actually viable ;)

I'm carrying the +3 flail for anything poison resistant/immune, although I haven't skilled maces at all. I'm somewhat torn on what weapon to enchant, and for now am I waiting, although I should probably not be sitting on enchant weapon scrolls for so long. I picked sif so I should be able to find haunt fairly quickly. Kiku would probably get it to me sooner but I kind of wanted to do more summoning than necromancy, and the channelling is nice.

Re: novelty characters

ebarrett recommended to me SpFE as a fun combo. It's a fantastic character with a playstyle that fits the "trickster archetype," in his words. You can dash around while inner/sticky/conjure flaming to set up great explosions. I recommend not going too far into conjurations, even though such a build would be strong, and trying to keep a scrappy, pesky pixie in mind. Be resourceful and kill things with whatever tools you can scrounge up.

SpFE played this way is not only fun and challenging, but fairly powerful. In a single, whimsically suboptimal attempt (I worshipped Vehumet specifically for Dazzling Spray and then switched to Jiyva...) I managed to splat on Zot:5 in 39000 turns. I wasn't trying to go particularly fast but kept a willingness to flee downstairs in line with how I envisioned a trickster spriggan ought to play. The character is without a doubt the most fun I've had in a non-winning game.

Re: novelty characters

From the terrible character ideas thread: Troll of Gozag. I haven't actually tried it yet, but I suspect that it would be possible to stay fed on the condition that you call shops as much as possible and generally always take food shops when available. I may be wrong about this. But by my estimates, for a simple three rune game, a melee troll (no spell/evocations hunger) takes around 100 rations to win, and there's generally around 50-80 rations generated, so if you called around 5-7 food shops, you could probably make it.

Conduct rules: Must take Gozag upon finding the altar, cannot skip temple, fully explore all floors up to d:9 or until you find the temple. The last one is somewhat questionable as leaving some unexplored space on an early floor is more likely to not be an altar, diving to the temple might actually hurt you more than not diving; you could use "Cannot enter lair, orc or D:10 until you have Gozag" instead.

I was half asleep, and I think I managed to get a troll that only trained armor (wearing a robe) and wielding a dagger with 0 short blades + under 5.0 fighting to Lair 5. I looked at the morgue a month ago and had no idea how I did it. Oh yeah, and I got abyss'd twice and died on shoals 5. Seriously, what RNG streak did I get there?

Speaking of transmuters, what about KoTm of Dith? Doesn't seem common but sounds alright. Could work on a Spriggan as well if not better.

Thank you, this sounds very fun! I would suggest trying this on a Tengu, that way you can impersonate Woody Woodpecker or the Road Runner as you play. And perhaps an even better start than FE is AM, for the book of debilitation :)

What would make Dith especially good for KoTm or SpTm? After my latest game with a VpMo of Dith I decided that I'll only take Dith from now on when I'm going to have either a strong ranged attack or conjurations, because that's when Shadow Mimic shines.

Re: novelty characters

Lately i've been trying to make hill orc of beogh warlord gangs with shields and swords they just look so cool like a Roman army! It takes forever now since they changed weapon pickup, used to be easy..Additionally I want them to have glowing weapons so i scum orc for orcs with daggers-scimitars of any brand, then level them in lair and ditch them if they get an arbalest. Best I got atm is 4 warlords with sword and shield after lair branches 1 even has double sword of speed :) Now to find a few gda's to gift so i can take them to Hell and back.

I tried a few times to get a Vampire of Gozag off the ground, and it was terrible. You barely make money fast enough to call food shops if you take damage and need to rest. If you survive, you spend all your gold on food shops and don't get any value out of Gozag. Maybe Su or Ne ally armies would keep you out harm's away and allow you to spend money on something other than food. Troll of Gozag might starve before the first shop without lucky early food finds.

My Invo-focused Zin run was with HO. A DD pumping Invo with +3 aptitude would have lots of MP for HW wand recharging. I think that could work without Necromancy or vampiric weapons?

It would be very very very hard. Having only /hw and recharging as your sole healing method is a slow death of 1000 cuts, and you have to be very very good at avoiding fights to get out with the orb alive before running out of Max mp. ( recall that invo is half as useful for max mp as spellcasting, and only the larger of the two values its used. ) I wouldn't reccomend it for anyone who likes sanity.

Yeah tbh the real issue is hellfire and hell effects i tried, but even when you could easily give them rn+++ they didnt stand a chance in hell. maybe pan would be a survivable option, unfortunatly they can't go there. Still its a cool thing totry and make work!

Why do you have to pretend GSCs don't exist? I thought statue form gives a 50% increase to all damage, which should be great on a GSC.

It does give +50% of course, and the slow effect, but unarmed is slowed as well. I slightly prefer to have unarmed slowed because that's still a .75 turn attack, where GSC would be 1.05 speed attack, but that isn't going to be a big deal.

I should probably fsim this, because now I'm curious which does more damage. As crazy as this may sound, I feel like unarmed might actually come out ahead on my kind of transmuter. With Chei, I had 45 str, which is +15 damage in statue form, +27 from skill, +6 base? So 48 total damage before fighting, and a GSC is 22 + 50% for 33 damage, but then gets an increase from maces which unarmed has no equivalent to. Is 27 maces skill +100% damage, or is that the max and it rolls 50% on average? First option would put GSC ahead, second and they're about tied. Is there a strength value for which unarmed is better? It'd probably be very high, but ogres of chei can get up there...

Re: novelty characters

I thought of making an evocations-focussed character with the intention of going to Dis and using the staff of Dispater for maximum hellfire damage - Makhleb is the obvious god choice because you can regain the HP you spend casting hellfire.

Furthest I ever got with it was getting killed in Dis.

Don't forget that a GSC can have a good enchantment, a desirable brand, and also M&F are much easier to train to min delay for ogres, than unarmed.

You're right, earth elementalist is a better start than transmuter, if you plan on using GSC.

Mine's only level 12 so far but seems to be going alright...Had some really bad RNG trolling going on, as I was gutsy and had decent food supply early on, so I tried calling an armor shop before any food shops, and it got placed way down on d:12 (I was around d:8 I think). So I went down to look, it was a terrible shop (no dragon armors or anything useful at all really), called a food shop....Vaults:1. Thanks. But it wasn't all bad news as I did find a FDA in a labyrinth so that is covered, and calling a second food shop landed it in d:13, so I think I'll live.

Re: novelty characters

Well in the interests of transparency I've managed to get both the mummy summoner and the troll of gozag killed off, although there's nothing wrong with the builds themselves, just my playing of them :) Poor troll tried to take on an orc warlord in a mostly fair fight (I did curare the warlord, but I only lured it around one corner and some of his friends did also follow around the bend). Not the best idea. This was made somewhat worse by me being only level 12 as I didn't have the food to finish lair, and was trying to finish off orc before going down to that d:13 food shop. A more normal branch order might have helped, but ultimately it's my fault for charging a warlord and friends.

Re: novelty characters

I notice from the character file above that you have the Akashic Record... which means that you must have scroll-identified a high-level book. Why would you do that? Surely you wouldn't learn any high-level spells on a Troll of Gozag with 4 int.

Tasonir - There was a post recently characterising Haunt as something you use to tie up enemies while you kill them with something else. The Haunt summon list is so weak.

TeBe is too easy. Try DEBe :P

I should probably fsim this, because now I'm curious which does more damage. As crazy as this may sound, I feel like unarmed might actually come out ahead on my kind of transmuter. With Chei, I had 45 str, which is +15 damage in statue form, +27 from skill, +6 base?

I ran some fSims Why do you have to pretend GSCs don't exist? I thought statue form gives a 50% increase to all damage, which should be great on a GSC.on this a while back and for an average HuMo that puts all point into dex, formless UC is VERY slightly worse than a +9 tripple sword of speed assuming 27 fighting and 27 UC and 27 LB. with statue form and 45 STR UC DEFINATLY does more dmge than GSC, probably even more than a ridiculus GSC like +15, str+12, HW, vs demons.

Novelty characters: get 27 UC and use a quick blade as a 2h so you have a faster weapon to throw more offhand punches.
play a vampire kinda like makabat, only with Qazlal. Kite and kill things with clouds.
