Re: Gods, I love this game

I liked a lot about Diablo 2: gorgeous 2D art, music, classes, fun abilities, cinematics, but the drop system where you need to farm bosses to get legendary equipment to be able to farm those bosses on higher difficulties and more efficiently is pretty fucking awful in my opinion (obviously, thousands of Diablo fans disagree) and I am glad Crawl is nothing like it.

Edit: well, I guess you can say don't need to farm to complete the game on Normal and probably Nightmare, so yeah. But I still don't see why'd you prefer its drop system to Crawl. I'm pretty sure I've gotten mostly crap from killing the bosses once.

Re: Gods, I love this game

The thing about games like Diablo 2 is that if you come to the game as a 'min-maxer', you look at the skills/items on wikis and say "I want to create a build X". With that build in mind, you figure out what skills you need, what items you need and then level/farm/trade to build up that vision. You can play it as a game of discovery and adaptation (especially in the earlier parts), but it's definitely not the optimal approach for that game, so the developers have to tune the difficulty of 'end-game' content to remain challenging to the min-maxers.

Crawl, on the other hand, is a game about scarcity (well, somewhat.) You only ever get access to a subset of available resources in a given game, which means you have to adapt to whatever is available. This is a completely different kind of game and it strongly depends on the scarcity of 'drops' to make it work. The more you dole out, the more you reduce the game to min-maxing within the scope of its full resource set, which is going to have fewer 'optimal solutions' than within paths that are restricted to subsets of the available loot space.

Being frustrated is fair game, and I'm not trying to say otherwise, but no one here is under obligation to respond (or even respond constructively) to anyone else. If you think the thread is going off track due to a misunderstanding of what you wrote, it makes sense to try to clarify what you meant, and maybe that'll prompt responses that are closer to what you wanted.

I mean, you can choose to feel how you want about whatever happens, but if you need every person to respond constructively to every idea you post in every thread you post in in order to be happy, you'll be unhappy more often than not.

I've been shaking my head at the irony of this, and it deserves a reply. I played Diablo a lot, and Diablo II especially. I also frequent a casino locally. I'm going to tell you that Crawl leaves me feeling gutted like the casino does, and like Diablo never did. That's the whole point of my initial complaints about parsimony. The way the loot is structured is having the same result on my senses as a slot machine on a Native American reservation casino does, which is to say, I'm far more often left feeling robbed with no joy than otherwise.

You talk about replayability, but Diablo II is still played online by thousands every single day, and countless more in single-player, and it is nigh on fifteen years old, with only few and infrequent updates. I believe that is because it offers more choices, and more variation. You can play softcore or hardcore. You can play and win with any build. If you find things too easy, you can make it harder by playing ironman or naked, and doing it in hardcore. I'm certainly not saying to make Crawl like Diablo, but philosophically, when I walk away from a game I think it's better to retain a sense of enjoyment rather than an incensed frustration at plain and common bad luck. I don't think such notions should be treated as heresy, that's all.

It sounds like your experiences are really different from mine. I've also played a fair amount of Diablo and Diablo II, and I quit once I realized that I wasn't actually having fun. I was grinding so that I could get the gear/XP I needed to grind bigger things to get even better gear. The whole game was designed around the constant escalation of loot and XP, loot and XP, and once you realize that you also realize there's never a point where you actually stop grinding and use all the stuff you got to play a non-grindy game. Also, while "you can play and win with any build" is probably true on Normal for all but the worst builds, there are a remarkably small number of good long-term builds, and it's very easy to waste a skill point permanently -- unless that changed sometime after 1.10. Overall, the core gameplay mechanic of D2 is finding loot, and so it makes perfect sense for the game to have very structured payout rates.

It's true that Crawl is more like the casino from the perspective that both can leave you with no tangible reward for the time you've spent; Diablo II on Hardcore is the same. Diablo II on Softcore does not have that feature, because there's no possibility of meaningful loss in Diablo II on Softcore. If meaningful loss leaves you feeling gutted, then I would strongly recommend that you avoid both casinos and Crawl.

The reason I compared the Diablo franchise to a casino in contrast to Crawl is that the Diablo franchise is, like a casino, engineered to be a fundamentally empty experience which keeps you engaged -- it offers a minimal level of gameplay based around the hope that something which could reward you will actually reward you. Both are effectively shiny, pleasant Skinner boxes. Crawl is not a Skinner box -- or at least not more so than the majority of video games -- in that the fundamental premise is that you'll have an interesting experience playing the game, and not that playing the game will give you rewards. No matter what happens, the game will end and your character and its loot stop existing. Your avatar will wander through a dungeon that neither it nor you, the player, have seen before, and you will adapt to the vagaries of this unique dungeon. Part of adapting to these vagaries is handling cases where the loot your avatar finds far exceeds your expectations, cases where it falls way below your expectations, and cases where it is fine, but simply different from what you had hoped for. That adaptation is interesting. What's boring to me is how in Diablo II, the guides for each build (and while there are many builds, most people are doing a build, planning out level 80 skill points from level 1) also specify which equipment you should use, usually using top-end uniques and sets that require hours of grinding to acquire -- an almost complete lack of adaptation.

I don't see any way that the loot generation plan you proposed would help Crawl become a better game. Right now the primary reward for defeating a dangerous monster is that the monster will not kill you or endanger you, and the primary reward for defeating a dangerous vault is the experience of doing so. I think that promotes good, non-treadmill gameplay.

That I disagree with your opinion about what contributes to a sense of enjoyment doesn't mean I'm calling your opinions heresy. It means I'm disagreeing with you. You need to be able to tell the difference. When mere disagreement starts talk about heresy, you're going to find yourself getting ignored pretty quickly.

Actually, some of the reasons I enjoyed Crawl and Diablo are similar - building a character, finding randomized loot, defeating plenty of monsters without much of the plot nonsense. Crawl is much less of a treadmill, though, which I greatly appreciate - a bastard sword you find on D:5 will serve you till the endgame and beyond, if enchanted right, and you don't need to farm Donald for one.

Re: Gods, I love this game

To be fair, I do think that Action-RPG gameplay can be very engaging, as it can be exciting to mow down hordes of monsters with your skills. The process of planning out builds can also be very fun, at least while you're still learning the mechanics and discovering new things. They just don't hold my interest in the long run, though some folks, with different neural wiring, seem to enjoy them for longer. Crawl can be exciting too, though I find that if I'm getting too excited in crawl, I'm probably about to do something stupid and get myself killed. Crawl is a game that rewards staying calm and thoughtful, which is essentially the opposite of the desired gameplay experience from an Action-RPG.

Though, this is somewhat tangential to what Aule was discussing. As Lasty mentioned, the big differentiator is that when you 'lose the lottery' in crawl and wind up killed as a result, it can make you feel like you've actually lost something. However, regardless of which game you're playing, you're still investing your time. The big illusion here is the feeling that when you die in crawl, you've somehow 'lost' that time. In reality, the time is spent whether you 'win' or 'lose', so the key is whether you enjoy the experience of getting there. 'Losing is Fun' is not just a phrase to express masochistic bravado; it's a fundamental philosophy for gaming (and perhaps even living) that puts the onus on both developer and player to create an experience that lives up to the motto. As such, any change has to be considered in this light. If a change makes it easier to 'win', will it still be as fun to win? Conversely, will it still be as fun to lose? So, Aule, what exactly will be more fun about having more/better loot? It seems to me that this would ultimately reduce the number of interesting choices, but maybe you think that right now there are too many insurmountable 'dead ends' without better loot to overcome them?

Ditto, but for me, Crawl is actually playing the game that Diablo II feels like you're always grinding your way towards. It's all the fun aspects of a character progression game without the completionist timesink incentives in a classic CRPG or the grinding timesink incentives in an ARPG. Sure, Crawl still eats all your time, but to me it feels like time you spent doing something instead of preparing to do something.

Re: Gods, I love this game

Warning, lots of talk about diablo II mechanics, because I liked diablo II:

Spoiler: show
I really enjoyed diablo II for a long time, and one of my favorite experiences on it was once I finally got a pure lightning sorc build up and running. Bots/Duping made the game a lot better because it was vastly more accessible - runes made for awesome currency in the expansion, but they were nearly impossible to farm yourself. Duping and trading for them was a lot more reasonable. I managed to get some lucky perfect drop that was worth a few high runes, traded it for an Infinity polearm, and was set. Playing in hell was a lot of fun, but doing it as a sorceress was very frustrating because monsters were outright immune to damage types...until you had infinity. The relevant modifiers there being the conviction aura and the -(45-55)% To Enemy Lightning Resistance. Conviction aura took a monster from 105% resistance (immunity) to 80% resistance (if you had an aura with -50% resistance - it varied based on the level of the aura). Yes, the math is right, 105% - 50% = 80%, trust me (resistances in diablo 2 were screwed up). With the right gear, the end game challenges were very appropriate and cool. I'm fairly convinced the resistances on monsters was put in by some data file engineer with little thought who really didn't understand all of the ways that players would end up trying to break the game data. For example, there's monsters who have several different levels throughout the acts which go from 150 to 170 to 190 resistance - which is completely meaningless, as any resist over 145 is exactly the same - unbreakable immunity. For some reason, lightning was the one element who didn't get creatures that did this - almost all lightning immune monsters had 100-120 resistance, which meant it was fairly easy to break immunity. There's some big color coded charts here: http://diablo.gamepedia.com/Immune_Mons ... Immunities

Basically, grind at normal level, get the gear to make nightmare appropriate, grind there, get the gear to make hell appropriate, then dominate hell and do the pandemonium events and beat the hell bosses. It's a good formula and is very popular. But it can go terribly wrong if you tweak the values the wrong way. Players should be able to notice tangible progress after playing for a certain amount of time, things shouldn't take extreme amounts of time to accumulate, etc. Diablo II's economy in general and rewards for legit players were too low, and the game was greatly helped by all the duping and botting that took place. I never did any myself, but I traded for items/runes which I'm certain had different amounts of legality, and that never bothered me. Not having infinity would have made the endgame much less fun. If anything, the biggest 'mistake' on the power curve was the sudden introduction of immune monsters in hell, how uneven immunities were (there's a night and day difference between a mob that's 105% resistant and one that's 145% resistant). Getting up to being able to farm the end of hell was something of a brick wall which most players only got over due to the inflated economy of dupes. Bring on the inflation, imho :)

This is an area most "free to play" mobile games goes too far in - you have to grind a lot to get anywhere, so that you'll pay to skip the grinding instead. Since I don't mind grinding much I'll still play them without paying anything, but it isn't what I'd consider ideal.

Regarding crawl (there's a point in here somewhere) it's nice to deal with scarcity and be unable to grind. It's a nice change from time to time - I also play starcraft which is similarly a game of skill. But there's room for both sorts of games - people are inherently drawn to progress and collecting things, and while that can be abused for greed (mobile games) it can also be done well. Diablo II did it pretty well, imho, although the duped runes helped quite a bit. When I play crawl I do tend to bend the dungeon to my will more often than I really adapt to it, because over time you can rely on a fairly wide range of common-enough items. You might not have them at the start, but you don't need much to get through the start, really.

Re: Gods, I love this game

Now we're getting somewhere. To recapitulate; I suggested the following:

Aule wrote:Look, this is not a game design issue I'm talking about here so much as a simple balance one. Something places a monster. So that something could also place treasure accordingly. If the placed monster is red-text, then maybe that could increase the chance of better loot. Yes, they sometimes carry loot, and so say if it's gray-text, then that's all it has, but white gets a shot at something extra, yellow a better shot at something extra and even better, and red is guaranteed phat lewt. To me, that would be a motivation to engage in more dangerous fights.

dpeg later said this:

dpeg wrote:I do understand what you mean, though, and I've been suggesting that uniques always carry one special item. Don't get too excited: what I want is that Gastranok (always a great sight on a helmet-handicapped species because of **hats**) almost never carries a plain hat -- the slug mage should come with a glowing hat. I am fine if that'd be always just +1 whenever it is plain right now; my motivation is that a player knows a plain hat is mundane, but an enchanted hat could be anything between +1 and an ego item. At least for me, this would make me much more itchy to attack Gastranok earlier. (Similarly for other uniques.) There's a reason I restrict to uniques: these are rare and memorable; I definitely don't want to modify all of Crawl's loot geneation.

which was what I really meant when I wrote, "Something places a monster." I had in mind only uniques and their placement at random in the game, as I mentioned the two uniques I had just dealt with on that orc level, but I did not specify that I meant uniques.

To be clear, then, my proposal to modify Crawl is as follows:

  • Uniques have special treasure generation in addition to that which exists at present.
  • flavor text (dangerousness) determines whether another treasure will drop
  • Gray (harmless) uniques have zero added drops.
  • White (easy) uniques have a 25% chance of additional treasure, randomly selected, weighted toward low-tier items.
  • Yellow (dangerous) uniques have a 50% chance of additional treasure, randomly selected, weighted toward middle-tier items.
  • Red (extremely dangerous) uniques have a 75% chance of additional treasure, weighted toward acquirement-level items, but also including scrolls and potions.

Right now the primary reward for defeating a dangerous monster is that the monster will not kill you or endanger you, and the primary reward for defeating a dangerous vault is the experience of doing so. I think that promotes good, non-treadmill gameplay.

Let me also be clear, here. I do not want Crawl to become a grindy game like Diablo. I totally concur that farming is not fun. The comparisons end here, though, because what I'm proposing cannot be "farmed." There is no farming in Crawl, because everything is placed at random, and nothing respawns. The uniques are going to get killed anyway. The issue is the reward. Like the song says (when paraphrased), "Baby, sometimes XP just ain't enough."

Jarlyk wrote:So, Aule, what exactly will be more fun about having more/better loot? It seems to me that this would ultimately reduce the number of interesting choices, but maybe you think that right now there are too many insurmountable 'dead ends' without better loot to overcome them?

Well, Jarlyk, yes, I think the game is entirely too stingy based on the over-weighted input of those who have mostly mastered the game already. I think just a little more loot would go a long way toward making the game more fun for more people. This is by no means a game-breaking suggestion. How many uniques does one encounter in an average game? How many are considered "extremely dangerous" when encountered? So we're talking about a few extra items, and the real chance of some good ones if you're brave enough. So what that anyone good enough could maximize the new mechanic, because if one is that good, then why should one even bother? Certainly, there is zero potential for scumminess, since no one can influence the placement or frequency of them. It's loot you have to earn, for pete's sake. There's no downside to that, in this circumstance

Just try it and see if you like it. I can't be completely crazy if dpeg admitted to having similar thoughts.

Re: Gods, I love this game

The problem with this suggestion as is, is that it then becomes optimal to dive rapidly to generate a bunch of "red" monsters, then go back up and level until they are easy to kill, then clean up with lots of regular monsters with extra loot.

You typically get something like 2-5 acquirements in a typical 3 rune game, giving one to 50% of 75% of red monsters would increase that to something like 20-50 per game, even presuming you found a way around the diving problem that wasn't terribly spoilery and abusable.

Finally, I don't think the loot levels in the game are too low as-is, perhaps tying *existing* loot generation to existing nasty monsters would be bad, but generating a bunch of *extra* items sounds bad to me.

If it's determined that getting rewards is good in conjunction with killing hard things (a point on which I'm by no means sold on yet)
I would propose the following:

When each level is generated, the floor item which is generated of the highest quality be moved into the inventory of the nastiest monster generated on the level. (Skipping some of the monsters who just shouldn't get anything.)

Wait, what? No, this treasure only generates upon kill. Diving as you describe and returning later would benefit nothing.

I don't think the placements of reds are that frequent, but if they are then a simple adjustment to the net percentage chance can avail to balance that at any time.

Re: Gods, I love this game

I do admit that it's kinda disappointing when Gastranok drops a plain hat, but that's more just a visceral reaction than an actual objection to the mechanics. The difference between finding a plain hat vs. finding a +1 hat is probably not going to decide the outcome of the game significantly. Perhaps the relatively low impact of changing this is actually an argument in its favor, though? If it's just that kind of small, relatively inconsequential boost, I think your proposal is a lot more reasonable than it first appeared.

As for the difficulty overall, though, I don't feel like the game is overly difficult as a result of the available items. Pretty much every death I've had I can directly attribute to tactical mistakes. Sure, strategic mistakes and unlucky equipment/book finds can make tactical situations more dangerous (requiring you to make fewer tactical mistakes), but I've yet to reach a point in the game where I felt like it was actually impossible for me to make further progress with my current situation. As it is right now, when I finally got a 3-rune win, it felt like a major victory, having had to learn a lot to reach that point. I'm still not particularly good at the game, but I feel like I'm still learning and growing as a player, which is only possible because of the level of challenge it provides. It feels like it's at about the right level to keep me interested without being so ridiculous as to make me walk away in frustration (for long.)

Aule wrote:Wait, what? No, this treasure only generates upon kill. Diving as you describe and returning later would benefit nothing.

I'm not sure I was clear enough about this: I object to the idea of actively tying special rewards to killing dangerous uniques beyond what they are carrying and using because 1) it pushes crawl further towards a game where it's optimal to kill everything, as opposed to having escaping a monster be as good as killing it in most situations; and 2) because I don't like the idea of adding more Skinner levers: do this, get a reward, repeat. Frequently having a disconnect between the risk of a fight and the prospect of a reward in Crawl is a good thing, because it keeps the focus on fighting when fighting is worthwhile, not fighting when you want another chance to play loot lottery. As a second related point, it would mean that !berserk, !haste and !might are often ?acquirement, since burning these types of resources make it easy to kill most uniques when they're still flagged as MTHRT_NASTY (red).

Moreover, generating the loot on the death of the monster means you get to circumvent the current loot tradeoff for uniques: fighting the unique while it wields/wears the item you want. Donald with a demon blade of distortion is a scarier prospect than Donald with an unbranded double sword, but when you defeat him you get the excitement of stealing his weapon. Donald with an unbranded double sword that just randomly loot pinatas into a rod of clouds or demon blade of distortion or whatever is just confusing -- monsters use weapons and rods, so why not use those? I would argue it's actually disconnecting risk and reward more than the current state of affairs, where uniques that generate with sweet loot are more dangerous than ones without.

As a side topic, I think parsimony in loot is better than generosity in terms of its effect on the player. When you're wielding a flail of protection in the Lair and you find a lajatang on the ground, that's exciting, but when you find your fifth lajatang and drop it on the floor along with three demon blades, four broad axes, five bardiches, and a stack of unread manuals, it loses some flavor.

And as far as the impact of good loot on ease of play, I'm pretty sure that at most one of my characters has ever died because of bad loot generation, but at least 10% of my online deaths are due to excessively good loot generation. But then, my characters do have rHubris--.

That's weird, in the Crawl I play most encounters are tab fodder, at least from a certain point in the game. Then again, autofight + animationless turn-based mean I don't really get terribly bored by dispatching another horde of yaks. In real-time (hi Diablo) that would be a much bigger problem (not saying it's not a problem at all in Crawl, though).

Re: Gods, I love this game

With casino slot machines, you almost always walk away unsatisfied, especially if you play it for a long time. Sometimes, though, you may hit a jackpot, and that's what keeps you addicted to them. Like this one, for instance. Started out getting books like crazy. Still haven't found all the spells I'd usually want, but certainly they have made it safer and better for advancement. But that's not all. The randarts and unrands have been simply nuts. Was using the Gong shield for a while there, but traded it for the current one. Not only a portal bazaar, but - count 'em - two more untimed bazaars. The FDA (second I've ever found) was just crazy, and take a gander at those gloves, sitting there in TRJ's vault that the rCorr FDA prompted me to take.

Bottom line is this: finding this stuff is fun. I don't really even care as much for winning as I do just being able to play with stuff like this. Those gloves! Not even a "mini" tornado, but a real-life blast.

Re: Gods, I love this game

I'm sorry to rain (?) on your parade, but this character's equipment doesn't look all that great to me. The weapon is mediocre, AC/EV/SH are pretty bad, the resistances are OK except for MR but the resistances are not the most important thing. Maybe it's not the amazing loot that made this character survive? Well, okay, that Faerie DA is neat but honestly, if you could make it far enough to kill Enchantress you probably didn't need it.
  Code:
(You subdued it on level 2 of the Elven Halls)

That's pretty cool, I never noticed that.

Just proves I'm not that hard to please. :)

I didn't notice it until you pointed it out. Was originally a +7 trident of poison flying around the Hall of Blades. Branded it fire, then rebranded it piercing (cry).

The only demon trident so far was exactly one, antimagic branded. But I do have better weapons I could use, should I want to shorten reach. Already have mindelay on poles, though, so the motivation isn't there.

Re: Gods, I love this game

Fwiw an antimagic demon trident is one of the best weapons in the game and would absolutely be better than a +7 trident of piercing. Or in fact most other weapons.

Not on a wizard, I suspect, unless this has changed:

The first part is correct. Antimagic would still be useful to you as a swap - first of all, the brand is so good that it makes many enemies (primarily the low melee damage, strong conjurations type) completely helpless, and as a swap when you run out of MP (and since you would often switch to melee when you run out of MP anyway, it fits).

Why do I always seem to see so little jewelery in dumps? Do people not bother carrying them to swap to? Or did you cut it from the dump?

The wiki is wrong to call anti-magic "nearly useless for any caster character," but I can understand not wanting to futz around with an antimagic weapon, even a very good one, if you are mostly killing stuff with spells. I don't doubt that it could be very useful even for Aule's character, but I understand why one wouldn't bother with it in this case. If you aren't interested in using it, though, definitely re-brand it when you get the chance.

Hmm, running out of MP usually means running, to me, and swapping in critical situations usually makes bad something worse, so I try not to do so. Furthermore, it would be just like me to forget to swap back before quaffing a potion of magic. Nevertheless you raise good points I'd not have thought of, so thanks.

Only cut the chaff from the kill lists. Jewelry has been nothing wonderful, except that ring I just bought. All the randarts in that department have been downright insulting. But I don't complain because I had early wizardry and MP rings drop. Can one get all items lying on the floor in a certain area, or even the whole game, included in the dump file?

What he said, and, thanks. Better go pick it up so I don't forget it in case that scroll reappears.
