I mean, what's not fun and exciting about that? Just read the message history, and you'll soon see the thrill. I knew I should have increased the lines of the message log in my rc file! Sorry that you missed the beginning of that edge-of-your-seat action.

Now, to be perfectly clear, let this thread be the start of something subversive, even by the standards of subversive reprobates. Let this be a showcase of those games that truly make you ask yourself if you are mentally deranged just for enjoying the masochism of it, or the rude futility of it, or the incomprehensible randomness of it. The ones that really challenge your sense of what is fun, and make you wonder whether you are just sick.

Like the day when you just could not kill a single, lone fucking bat to save your one and only life.

Pathetic.

This is not the best example, either. I can still see a ray of light in this one. I did not read-id the immo scroll mid-battle. But other than that it could have been perfection.

Re: Gods, I love this game

You are gonna hate me but I can't help myself:

You are too injured to fight recklessly!

You shouldn't tab against the first enemy on a FeWz, even if it is a bat. You could have probably eliminated about 30% of that bat's hits against you if you backed away, and only attacked when it was next to you.

Of course, I often tab against bats when the area around is clear, even on D1, if I'm not trying to streak or something. But on a FeWz I don't think I'd do that, even in casual play, cause well, 7 HP. Well, okay I wouldn't play a FeWz casually, in the first place, but that's just me.

Anyway, the story is pretty funny though, and I have had some games where hilarious deaths happened right off the bat. (Forgive the pun :) )

Well, you really only see half the battle, there. I wasn't exaggerating that. The point where the cockroach trapped the bat in the hallway between us resulted in kitty taking many hits along the way, and the final act of desperation you quoted was just the foregone conclusion. Seriously, that whole encounter was such an egregiously offensive series of rolls that it defies comprehension. No amount of prudence can defeat such profound bad luck.

I'm happy the humor was found. :)

Well, if no one ever died to a bat, bats should be removed.

Read that entire message log, it's gold. To be fair, I didn't use beastly appendage, I didn't think I'd need it, but I did at least try a poison spit, which missed. Also: this is the character that ended my longest streak, with 4 wins. I'm not entirely sure how much health I had when I started the fight, naga max hp is 18, but I had fought some things before this, they were completely killed, then the hobgoblin approached me. I'd say I had something like 12/18 hp or so, and then the fight started. It was definitely over 60% because that's my autofight threshold, and I was able to tab until after he hit me twice. To be fair I picked Naga Transmuter because I wasn't really trying to extend the streak, but this was just harsh.

Re: Gods, I love this game

Okay, I think this definitely qualifies, also, even though my character is still alive after it. This is the dump after completing D:4. XL8 after completion. And he died, once, so really XL9. Some kind of gnoll fortress on D:4 whose denizens just let themselves out. Gotta love it.

"Here: a hobgoblin, wielding a club, wearing a plate armour and wearing a tourmaline ring"

The indestructible hobgoblin. Totally ridiculous.

If I lost a life early on with a Fe, I'd probably just lose interest and suicide.

I've done that a number of times. Live, Die, Repeat.

The hobgoblin's tourmaline ring was MR.

Re: Gods, I love this game

Here's another one. Been playing formicids since my last win, and they are some buff beasts. They should be abbreviated MoFo, really. There's no reason I shouldn't have won with the first one, and died quite stupidly. Since then almost every death was preventable (fucking bats), and almost every one has been over XL10, so it's no an inherent weakness in this species. The current (7th) one is being played even more cautiously, now XL13, and with 13 levels completely explored and most of Orc:4 covered, plus a sewer, he's got... nothing. Trying to take Orc 4 with Minor magic and a couple wands is stupid hard. Throw Fannar and Nessos in there for good times, and it's a real party. No fucking scrolls anywhere, for anything. Used a couple rc and id, but that's it. No books that are usable, but two highlevels (joy). Vehumet and the dungeon have conspired to maximum parsimony, and there is absolutely nothing fun about playing this way. And then I hear you're making it even harder, because you're just sick is the best I can tell.

Look at the kill list. Minor magic and a couple wands. Ridiculous. Insanely hard is no fun if there is no reward. Basic game science.

Just got the fire from Veh, but unusable immediately, and lightning bolt was a desperation move because it's pretty useless for the most part, draining an entire MP pool for one kill, basically. I was also offered many other spells that spell doom rather than assistance, but I'm used to that.

Just place some appropriate books, like you do weapons and armor, as you go deeper. Is it really so essential to make it next to impossible to move forward? Anyway, I left orc:4 and headed for lair. Things are looking up. I found another scroll of identify, doubling my bounty of scrolls in one swoop. Rock and roll, man.

Re: Gods, I love this game

Lightning Bolt is really good if you crank up the spellpower on it. Low power LB feels like the worst thing ever, yeah, but it's true for a lot of spells (especially the ones with miss chance). Vehumet actually makes it worse, sort of, since he gives you wizardry so you can cast LBolt with really crappy spellpower.

Edit: well, LBolt is also really loud which should be a concern for you since you can't tele or hastewalk from danger.

Re: Gods, I love this game

Personally, I prefer to finish Lair before doing Orc:4. Things can get pretty out of hand there if you're not careful, though that's true for most branch ends (and most other places in the game, for that matter.) With your current setup, Lair should be pretty straightforward; you've got Mephitic Cloud for blink frogs/yaks and you've got Lightning Bolt, which can sometimes double-zap kill hydras with a single well-placed cast.

I really wouldn't say that crawl is insanely hard. It takes a while to learn what tools you have at your disposal, but mostly it's a game about patience and careful play. I only think of it as hard because I 'lose' so often as a consequence of stupid mistakes. There's no reward for losing, but losing can still be fun. True, crawl is a game that can be 'won', but all paths return to the same screen in the end, which is just the beginning.

Danger like as in sun demon? Fire bolt was working well, and so I went back to claim the books that were likely to be found in the orc shops (it had almost been cleared already), and the last high priest's sun demon just would not timeout, wasting me as I attempted to ascend the stairs a mile away from when I ran, also badly malmutated by his neqoxec. Fucking horse shit. I never have this kind of trouble in orc. Amazing what privation can do to the whole experience.

Yes, a sun demon is extremely dangerous. I would probably try to maybe brilliance up and go for the priest if I saw him summon one, because you can't really walk away from a faster thing, especially not from one with such a powerful attack. Additionally, you could try to make a killhole next to the vault before encounter and try to bait the summon-y dudes into it.

Nice gloves these were. RIP.

Thank you, but I think the kill list above shows my facility with the spells in that book. As I noted to Sar, I usually don't have issues in orc.

I really wouldn't say that crawl is insanely hard.

I didn't say that, either. I said that when the random nothingness manifests repeatedly, it makes it so. This kind of behavior should not be allowed to occur, IMO. It's bad enough having so many choices that can be fatal, and far worse that with plain bad luck even good choices are not sufficient for survival.

I know patience. I played my first species over 150 times sequentially before finally winning with it. And loot is supposed to be commensurate with difficulty. It's like a law of gaming, that's all I'm saying.

I disagree with that. The idea of roguelikes, in a nutshell, is replayability from permadeath + randomness. While design could intentionally prevent bad luck ("random nothingness"), that'd clamp one side of variance and cause several bad effects: (a) loss of randomness, (b) loss of replayability (more bad play that gets unpunished by character death, since such variance reduction would inevitably affect not *just* random nothingness), (c) even worse distinction between player levels.
As we say in the design statement, given our inability to meet all desiderata, we accept lost games. I guess any roguelike game will be lost if you roll badly throughout. There's nothing to be done about, we're not apologetic. The point is that different players will perform differently, given some (or a lot of) bad luck.

And loot is supposed to be commensurate with difficulty. It's like a law of gaming, that's all I'm saying.
I also disagree with that. Due to the random nature, we're fine with swings in both direction: you can stumble upon perfectly fine items just on the floor. Then again, we accept challenges without compensation, too -- e.g. from vaults or branch ends (for vaults, some care is necessary if they're purely optional).
A different way to look at it: if some monster/unique/vault/branch (end) underperforms, i.e. kills relatively few characters, then it might be pseudo-content and we're unhappy with it. In other words, non-trivial deaths are actually necessary to make sure the game is working properly.

In my (probably very private) opinion, Crawl is actually way too lenient in many places. However, given its baroque size, it does not seem very advisable to ramp up difficulty sharply. It's a slow process in any case.

I've only had a few times where I felt like I was screwed over by rng and they were on D:1 (usually involving a super early Gnoll and no escape options), which I think is fine. If I have no choice but to die, at least it's a quick death.

I have not played all roguelikes by any stretch, but those I have played (and any other game, pretty much) have scaled treasure classes that provide a baseline expectation of majority level-appropriate loot. After playing hundreds of Crawl games, I don't see how the wildly random fluctuations of the monolithic model used here makes the game more replayable. To me, it makes it only more frustrating. Of what possible use is finding a Necronomicon on D:1?

Look, this is not a game design issue I'm talking about here so much as a simple balance one. Something places a monster. So that something could also place treasure accordingly. If the placed monster is red-text, then maybe that could increase the chance of better loot. Yes, they sometimes carry loot, and so say if it's gray-text, then that's all it has, but white gets a shot at something extra, yellow a better shot at something extra and even better, and red is guaranteed phat lewt. To me, that would be a motivation to engage in more dangerous fights. (I do it anyway for the challenge, but the no-rewards part is leaving me rather unsatisfied, and my desire to replay diminishes greatly.

I don't know what the answer is, but radical alteration of the design philosophy is not it, and not what I am suggesting. I'm only suggesting that consideration be given to the fun aspect of replayability. I've played thousands of games in other individual titles, and I still play those games, which are nowhere near as stringently sadistic as this game. Not even on the same planet. This is merely a genuine perspective from a real player. Take it FWIW.

The paraphrase is this: All work and no play will make crawl a dull game.

But golden dragon armor can, not to say that it is anywhere near equivalent to a Necronomicon. But it's happened to me when playing a mummy.

D:1 GDA is better than D:1 Necronomicon since it is extremely useful at least to a subset of characters, while the Necronomicon would be literally useless to anyone for a very long time.

There are other reasons to engage in a dangerous fight besides just loot. XP is a big one, of course. Fighting something because otherwise it'll kill you first is another. So is killing it because it's between you and a rune or the Orb. But if none of those are compelling reasons to engage in a dangerous fight, I have to ask: why are you bothering?

Re: Gods, I love this game

I think the difficulty of crawl is OK. If crawl were much more difficult then a lot of builds would become less viable. Optimal play is not necessary with a strong character, but becomes more important if you have a weaker character. If optimal play were required with a strong character, then weaker characters would be unwinnable, which would be bad since it would decrease variety of gameplay.

In other words, if you think crawl isn't hard enough, just play an OpTm^Sif (or ^Xom, if you're truly badass). If you think it's too hard, play a MiFi^Ash.

Re: Gods, I love this game

While I agree that randomness is crucial for replayability value, it's no coincidence that I prefer the conjurer background over the other spellcasting backgrounds. The biggest reason for it is its starting book, which provides a straightforward gradual increase in offensive power in a timeframe that is usually short enough to stay well ahead of the difficulty curve. That's not the case with the others. But I guess that is by design.

I've had some wizards who had to muddle through the Lair without finding a single helpful book. It might be "doable", but it is a challenge. But I guess that is by design as well.

I've sometimes wished that if you roll a Fire Elementalist you'd have some guarantee of getting the Bolt of Fire some time during midgame before you are forced to tackle the first rune vaults, and maybe even Fire Storm somewhere along the way. I can see why a Conjurer or a Wizard wouldn't get such a guarantee and should do with whatever the dungeon gives, or doesn't give. With Vehumet, you're likely to be offered some kind of a bolt but by then an elementalist has likely invested heavily in a different school and training another one from scratch takes a big investment in skill points that would be better spent somewhere else, like Dodging or Fighting.

I'd change Vehumet so that it'd always offer the one level 6ish spell based on the starting background at some point along the way, and also include the big spell in her final list. I'd say the randomness is high enough even with that kind of an olive branch for the player.

Besides, the items one finds may affect the preferred spell set anyway. I had a fireblaster wannabe who found a piece of armour with rC+++ and was happy to jump on Vehumet's ice magic offerings. So it's not like this kind of change to eliminate some of the variance would make Crawl too unpredictable.

Anyway, I like Crawl enough as it is. You can have some effect on the variance by the choice of your character combination. And sometimes I roll a challenging combo just for the fun of it even though I know it'll probably end poorly. But personally I'd still like little changes like these to give some predictability.

Here's an idea: why not give slight crosstraining from Fighting (all physical skills) and Spellcasting (all magical skills), something like 0.2 per level difference. So 15 Spellcasting and 3 Fire= +2.4.
Three wins: Gargoyle Earth Elementalist of Ash, Ogre Fighter of Ru, Deep Dwarf Fighter of Makhleb (0.16 bugbuild :( )

One point in Spellcasting is already worth 0.25 points in every school. The base formula for how skills affect spell power or success (before int, brilliance, wizardry, etc is applied) is ((Spellcasting / 2) + (2 * [average_spell_schools]). So increasing spellcasting by one point is equivalent to increasing the average of the spell schools by 0.25 points, which can be achieved by increasing each individual spell school by 0.25 points.

Umm, what, exactly, is wrong with this idea that everyone is ignoring so well? I see some talk about game difficulty since my considered reply to dpeg, but difficulty was never a complaint in the instant case (true story), and I see others enjoying their own asshattery, and some others also enjoying it, but not a peep about the actual content of my post.

And no, duvessa, your quote counts as asshattery, as always, because "What possible use is a Necronomicon on D:6?" has the same goddamned meaning in reference to the character file posted, which also found a Grand Grimoire on D:8. Also your previous irrelevant, presumptuous and arrogant ad hominem attack certainly counts as aggravated asshattery. And a counsellor thanked you for it! Such a classy place.

That's really what I love most about this game.

Re: Gods, I love this game

Aule:
1) power creep. Crawl has lots of fights (too many of them!), most of them not hard, even if the game thinks they are. Your proposal adds many items.
2) reward for killing exists: it is xp (and here I mean skills rather than XL)
3) loot (i.e. potentially good items) in Crawl comes from vaults (or the floor)

You can change any of these, but it's a lot of work, and I don't really see the gain.

I do understand what you mean, though, and I've been suggesting that uniques always carry one special item. Don't get too excited: what I want is that Gastranok (always a great sight on a helmet-handicapped species because of **hats**) almost never carries a plain hat -- the slug mage should come with a glowing hat. I am fine if that'd be always just +1 whenever it is plain right now; my motivation is that a player knows a plain hat is mundane, but an enchanted hat could be anything between +1 and an ego item. At least for me, this would make me much more itchy to attack Gastranok earlier. (Similarly for other uniques.) There's a reason I restrict to uniques: these are rare and memorable; I definitely don't want to modify all of Crawl's loot geneation.

Spells are loot, and guaranteeing a end-game level spell based on background is like guaranteeing and end-game level weapon based on starting weapon. In both cases, if you pick gifting gods sooner or later you'll probably get something like what you want, and sometimes you'll just stumble over it, but generally there's going to be some tension between what you want and what you have available. That's good. It means you sometimes have to make tough choices: do you waste some of the XP you invested in long blades (or fire magic) to take advantage of that broad axe of elec (or bolt of cold or iron shot or refridgeration), or do you keep the extra XP and make do with what you've got for now?

Also, FWIW, rC+++ is nice for Refridgeration and maybe Freezing Cloud, but it's also nice for allowing you to wear rings of fire and get amazing spellpower on your fire spells.

No one is obligated to respond to any one proposal, so it's not particularly reasonable to get salty when you don't get the feedback you want.

In this case, the proposal seemed to me to be an expression of a preference for a strikingly different loot design philosophy, one that resembles casino games like Diablo, in a CYC thread about being screwed by randomness. It struck me as venting rather than a serious proposal, so I didn't see any need to respond.

I can understand that design choice. But I think the difference between the 9th level spells and an end game weapon is the amount of skill points required to make it usable. By the time Vehumet offers you the last 3 it's hard to justify picking one outside you main spell school in a regular game. So it's just a missed opportunity. Also the 9th level spells are expensive enough, even if aligned, so many people skip those regardless. That's one argument for at least offering "the one" among the last three.

I can see why the 6th level one would still be random. The 6th level spells are usually always within reach whenever you stumble upon them.

True. With fire blasters my standard midgame gear seems to be rC robe and =fire as they are relatively common and it's quick to swap the resistance just by removing a ring or putting it back. The character I was talking about was offered Refridgreration and having rC+++ with it makes all the difference. It also allows you to self-target Freezing Cloud with little drawback in case you get surrounded.

Excuse me, but I got salty with those who got salty, period. And the bandwagon took off from there, playing its looney tune.

On another note, I do find the lack of a "tier 2" spellbook to a common problem when I play casters. I've gotten far enough (usually into lair) that I want some level 4-6 blasty spells, but don't yet have any to memorize. This is especially bad on wizards, as most elementalists get at least one reasonably powered mid-range spell.

I don't think the solution is any change to crawl, however, but to your playstyle. Wizard is a background that forces adaptation. I don't like this - so I play conjurors. Your starting book could get you through to level 20 with IMB + battlesphere alone. It's not an ideal spellset, but it'll last if you really need it to. Different backgrounds play differently, which is a good thing. My suggestion is to just stop playing wizards :)

While finding a decent weapon is a lot more reliable than that perfect spellbook, this is another reason I like unarmed combat. You start with your final weapon :)

Instead of hoping you get some good spells as a wizard, you could also just start out as a hybrid and use the wizard book for support. That's how I did my OgWz.

Talk about asshattery aside, this sounds an awful lot like you're demanding that people start discussing your idea. That's what I'm referring to.

Aule wrote:And no, duvessa, your quote counts as asshattery, as always, because "What possible use is a Necronomicon on D:6?" has the same goddamned meaning in reference to the character file posted, which also found a Grand Grimoire on D:8. Also your previous irrelevant, presumptuous and arrogant ad hominem attack certainly counts as aggravated asshattery. And a counsellor thanked you for it! Such a classy place.

That's really what I love most about this game.

The thing you sarcastically love most about this game is a voluntary online community related to it?

Also it wasn't particularly ad hominem, since your point was that good choices lead to victory, and duvessa's point was that your bad choices led to your death. Which would be discussing your point and not you. Mincing words, also not irrelevant.

Not that I'm one to talk- I make bad choices in Crawl and die all the time. But they were my choices, damn it!

Being myself a voluntary part of that online community, I say, yes, the behavior of that community is something I care about, thanks. If toxicity is the desired mode of interaction for the community as a whole, then let it be made clear, but I don't believe it is. There are a number of people that represent the community well, and becomingly, and I have enjoyed their benefaction immensely, mostly expressing such appreciation privately to them. So you're not taking in the whole story, here.

There is a reasonable expectation that the discussion prompted by my comments will pertain to the actual content of those comments, rather than being based on an erroneous interpretation of the comments. I know I'm speaking English, and I know I'm doing it well, so when the topic goes completely in a direction away from my comments, when those comments are the impetus for response, well, you can see how that may be frustrating, I am sure.

Lasty wrote:In this case, the proposal seemed to me to be an expression of a preference for a strikingly different loot design philosophy, one that resembles casino games like Diablo...

I've been shaking my head at the irony of this, and it deserves a reply. I played Diablo a lot, and Diablo II especially. I also frequent a casino locally. I'm going to tell you that Crawl leaves me feeling gutted like the casino does, and like Diablo never did. That's the whole point of my initial complaints about parsimony. The way the loot is structured is having the same result on my senses as a slot machine on a Native American reservation casino does, which is to say, I'm far more often left feeling robbed with no joy than otherwise.

You talk about replayability, but Diablo II is still played online by thousands every single day, and countless more in single-player, and it is nigh on fifteen years old, with only few and infrequent updates. I believe that is because it offers more choices, and more variation. You can play softcore or hardcore. You can play and win with any build. If you find things too easy, you can make it harder by playing ironman or naked, and doing it in hardcore. I'm certainly not saying to make Crawl like Diablo, but philosophically, when I walk away from a game I think it's better to retain a sense of enjoyment rather than an incensed frustration at plain and common bad luck. I don't think such notions should be treated as heresy, that's all.
