This game is pretty easy if you know how to forgo any fun or excitement of this game in just the right ways. (And the reason my stats suck is because I don't do it, since I already don't enjoy playing it.)

By the way, statue form is much better than lichform both AC-, damage- and investment-wise. (Although getting Borgnjor's Revivification/Death's Door is certainly an entirely different topic.)

Re: CiP OpTm of Chei (yep)

Transmuters are hard because unarmed combat is tough/weak in the early game, especially when you're also training magic.

First thing to look into for your character would be getting more fighting/UC. Or you might want to think about getting a ranged attack like iron shot or throwing, or perhaps controlled blink so your movement speed isn't so much of a problem. You might also want to ditch the shield - you don't have a ton of skill investment in it, and it's only a buckler so it isn't that helpful, and it's slowing your attacks, and statue form gives you plenty of defenses anyway.

Of course it's better. But not in Tomb, not in Hells, not in Panda. Even not in Slime Pit.

Done.

Throwing, magic skill is pricey.

Pricey.

Right in general, wrong for Op. Shield not slowing my Op attacks, and it reduce my Op damage output just a bit, while can fully block nasty strike, filled with elemental damage (like from Ugly Thing or Ice Fiend).
For now I can kill Ice Dragon with one hit.

Why do you think necromutation is better than stat form in any of these places?

Re: CiP OpTm of Chei (yep)

Necromutation is good for most mages since it doesn't slow them down. But statform is usually better for unarmed combat, especially with octopodes: you get tons of AC, which you don't get in lichform and which you need as a pode, and there are extra bonuses to unarmed combat when in statform that more than compensate for being slow. With rN+++ in statform, torment is barely threatening.

Your buckler is slightly slowing your attacks; any shield always slows unarmed combat attacks no matter the shield skill. According to the wiki it slows UC by 1 aut, 50% of the time. So you would go from 0.5 time to attack to 0.6 time to attack, 50% of the time, making your attacks take 10% longer on average. It can be worth it with a larger shield, but in your case I think you need more UC/fighting more than you need to upgrade to a shield or large shield.

In general I think you trained too much magic skills, getting everything to 1% or 0% fail. For instance, it's ok to leave statform at like 5% or 10% fail, which lets you focus more on other skills.

You are going to want something to deal with enemies at range. Hellfire is particularly serious when you can't walk up to them (since Chei).

Re: CiP OpTm of Chei (yep)

necromut is entirely undesirable, statform is "okay" for the two races that can't wear armor
it's like saying cat shit is better to eat than dog shit; sure you might be right but
who would seriously eat any kind of shit

nilsbloodaxe wrote:Why do you think necromutation is better than stat form in any of these places?

Because I don't like Torment, you know, usual story - you take a step under Chei, and nasty demon cast Torment, he is at the edge of LOS, and you are at half of your HP already. Don't like such stories.

Necromutation is the only thing, that fully block bad mutations, thats why I love it, besides it immunity to Torment.
Because teleportitis can kill every character, like blink near Isle of Hellions in Panda.
It's such a huge mystery for me just why you all don't love Necromutations, or even hate it.

PS I noted, that I can't drown even in Statue Form. That's a nice, thanks devs.
Song of Slaying becomes less useful at late stage of the game, this is not nice.

PSS I can say I don't remember any dangerous for me uniques, except usual early Sigmund. While running from him, I ran into a dead end, and he almost kill me. Thanks devs! Without him, the game would have lost its charm.

Re: CiP OpTm of Chei (yep)

Getting anything in the line of fire of mutaters, getting out of LoS (?fog, corners, etc.) or simply killing them (since a lot of them can be killed in one turn by a character in extended, think neqoxecs and shining eyes) is also 100% mutation protection that doesn't require you to invest in a level 8 dual-school spell. To see how much necromutation sucks, you can compare it to other level 8 spells (e.g. LCS and chain lightning, which do massive amounts of damage in one cast, which is almost as good at protecting you from torment and mutations as necromutation without being virtually useless or even harmful against other monsters).

You get 90% protection from an amulet. Do you think the difference between being mutated 1 time out of 10 and 0 times out of 10 is significant enough to warrant the massive exp investment you need for necromutation even as a transmuter? Consider that most of the hypothetical 10 times above could have probably been avoided by different positioning, ranged attacks or summons.

Additionally, most bad mutations aren't very harmful anyway. There are a few exceptions, obviously, berserkeritis, delayed scroll reading and teleportitis come to mind, but a large portion are more in the stat loss and shoutitis league.

So, in order for necromutation to be useful vs mutations:
-you need to position yourself incorrectly and/or fail to use summons or ranged attacks, since in the vast majority of cases having mutate cast at you isn't unavoidable
-you need to not be wearing an rMut amulet, or be unlucky enough to be mutated despite wearing one (10%!)
-you need to get an actually harmful mutation (much like your "shield blocked orb of destruction" example doesn't prove that shields are good since it's an isolated incident, the "teleportitis put me into hellion island" example is extremely construed and doesn't even represent 0,1% of bad mutation cases. I am positive that more people have been killed in extended by using lichform and realising too late that they needed a potion or being dispelled)
-even assuming that the above all fails and you get a really bad mutation, you can just quaff !cure mut which is nearly always an available item if you have been consistently following the positioning/summons/ranged attacks bit, and which you can now carry freely around with you for instant use in hell/pan/abyss, since item destruction has been removed

All of this ignores the fact that if you had invested the exp needed to cast necromutation in other skills, the resulting boost to your character's power would probably more than compensate for the bad mutations you prevented by being in lichform (which you could just look at as a complex bad mutation with its most important properties being that takes away a big chunk of your exp and prevents you from quaffing potions).

Re: CiP OpTm of Chei (yep)

Tbh when pressed to make a choice between SF and Nmut as an Op of Chei I dunno what would I pick, as moving at 3.0 speed or whatever speed cheistatue moves at seems kind of bad.

Then again, I don't play Op or Chei characters.

I didn't mean to advocate for SF, personally I'd probably stick to blade hands or something.

DF is probably an alright option now that it doesn't meld all Op rings again. Cheint will help with casting it and it gives you best damage and a ton of HP.

Yes I do. There is nothing worse then to get teleportitis, shoutis, deformed body when these are pierce your rMut.

Additionally, most bad mutations aren't very harmful anyway. There are a few exceptions, obviously, berserkeritis, delayed scroll reading and teleportitis come to mind, but a large portion are more in the stat loss and shoutitis league

They are harmful enough to care of them (also I desagree that berserkeritis 1 or 2 is bad - as a Tm I want to give such mutation, in this run I specially let the moth to berserk me while I was in statform - result was in ~350+ HP).

So, in order for necromutation to be useful vs mutations:
-you need to position yourself incorrectly and/or fail to use summons or ranged attacks, since in the vast majority of cases having mutate cast at you isn't unavoidable

There are places where it is hard to positioning yourself right (Slime Pits (walls burn you even if you have rCorr, and if you haven't..., Abyss).
There are places that quckly kill your summons (Slime Pits).
There are treats, that don't let you to position right (Cacodemon with "irresistable digging bolts of energy").
There are combinations of species\backgroung\god\spell (Tm of Chei in Statue Form e.g.) that fail to position themself in time due to their slowness.
Thee are combination of all four factors.

-you need to not be wearing an rMut amulet, or be unlucky enough to be mutated despite wearing one (10%!)

I have happened the like the first time I got to Slime Pits. Also, mutation was good, another cases wasn't so good.
And you forgot about magic energy contamination as a result of Hell effect, which sucessfully can bring you bad mutations.
I have happened the like the first time I got myself to Hells.

your "shield blocked orb of destruction" example doesn't prove that shields are good since it's an isolated incident

It's an example. Try to fight as an Op vs multiple enemy with, or without shield, you'll see the difference.
Also, hit that bring elemental damage (Ice Fiend), or blockable spell like Iron Shot or LCS is a real danger.

the "teleportitis put me into hellion island" example is extremely construed

Nope. As a Tm, I used Death Door, Controlled Blink and LCS to ged rid of Hellions on isle. Not best method, but the only I had.
Anyway, the more time you spent near Hellion Isle, the more dangerous it is with teleportitis.
Also, I have had teleportitis on this char, and several time it threw my into a vault. It was nothing dangerous in Crypt, but in Panda ot Ziggurat it is a very different matter.

I am positive that more people have been killed in extended by using lichform and realising too late that they needed a potion or being dispelled)

I still don't see how it can be more dangerous then Hydra Form. It's a usual balance the pros and cons, you just need to handle them.
!healing doesn't do much difference in Ziggurats, or near Hellion Isle. )
Firs my 15 run win was VSTm, who can't quaff potion at all.

-even assuming that the above all fails and you get a really bad mutation, you can just quaff !cure mut which is nearly always an available item if you have been consistently following the positioning/summons/ranged attacks bit, and which you can now carry freely around with you for instant use in hell/pan/abyss, since item destruction has been removed

honestly teleporting in a zig (it's all pain) or pan (90% empty space) isnt too bad
really the only reason teleportitis is a pain is it's actually dangerous when you aren't a killing machine like in extended when you'd actually get it if you weren't deliberately screwing yourself (and it ruins autotravel)

PROS OF NECROMUT:
6 ac, 40 mr, rC+, some irrelevant resists
CONS OF NECROMUT:
costs a whole kiloChei of exp to get
no pots
makes you look dumb in tiles
you die to every shadow fiend ever
PROS OF HYDRA FORM:
kills everything, cleaves, never dies
CONS OF HYDRA FORM:
nothing since you never die and it kills everything
Why are we comparing the two
You are right, but what if I alredy got nice set of good mutations? And I don't want to part with them, I'll miss them?

I'm sure you'll miss that +2 str mut that was adding about 3% to your damage yeah

dunno about you but i like having !hw in 1 turn, not 2.5

it's still blade hands

in short why did i even post this
also please stop referring to Pan as "Panda" my fursona is a panda and i am very offended

Smiters/reapers are usual treat. In Tomb 3 scroll of noise do all the work. Step in, use scroll, wait, stairdance.

CBlink alone would be enough.

As a Tm with only LCS as ranged attack? Don't think so.

Ending a form takes 1.5 turns (for whatever reason).

That's a good argument, but it's just mean you should do it a turn before.

In general, I forgot to add it in previous post - Necromutation let your missteps in positioning/avoiding bad mutations be less serious, and that is good.

PS Well, I remembered I used only Controlled Blink. DD, Cblink to hellions, kill 1-2, retreat, repeat.

Yeah, I'm not surprised that you did not notice another 10 mutations.

dunno about you but i like having !hw in 1 turn, not 2.5

And I like to have rTorment.

it's still blade hands

Yeah, and it's still sucks.

also please stop referring to Pan as "Panda" my fursona is a panda and i am very offended

I suppose you'll stay still offended, because Panda is a Panda.
Or you will not look for a reason to be offended, and will not be offended.

There are a few rare cases, when you need full damage potential.
In 99 from 100, shield+unarmed will be OK.
In my humble opinion.

Uh, herp derp, who is bennu, and more then interesting - why my Op should get only ~10 AC? Don't you know that blessed Ozocubu's Armour add AC to undead flesh (Stoneskin to living in Statue Form)?

bennu = tomb monster put in to stop tomb being trivial to people that waste all the exp there on necromut
good point on ozo armor though, you can max out three skills to get the ac you would with two

Necromutation is harmless (you also could handle well and have no problem with it).

no potions, 2.5 turn delay for ddoor/borg (much better spells), DU vulnerability, no regen spell
i see a lot of problems, and torment is really easy to deal with out of zigs anyway
your fault for using a tm of chei and not knowing how to play the game

And yours is you talking pure, undiluted bullshit.
I'm playing Tm with melee, open your eyes.

you literally said you had LCS for some inane reason
if you werent worshipping chei you wouldn't have all these problems anyway (even with chei you have temporal distortion to make it move towards you!!)

Yeah, you know - full three bottle. Given the fact, that it cancell Dmsl first, then contamination, this huge amount let me cure as many as 1.5 cases of contamination. Yay!

um what, it cures all the things
anyway if you dont spend a million turns 5ing around you don't get contaminated in hell
it helps to have regen, ie not be in lichform!

i like shields a lot but using a buckler on an unarmed guy absolutely destroys your damage so i can't argue for this

Absolutely destroys my damage? Did you see my viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11699&p=200044#p200044
I couldn't notice any difference in damage output - Ice dragons are still dying from ONE Tab press.
And I have noticed that I get hit more ofter without, and in crowdfight it lead to fast HP loss.
with 27 all skills, i one shot things with tab too
bucklers block so little that it isnt too big of a deal (and iirc, multiple hits in one turn means your SH means less anyway!)
Just like Necromutation is.

i think this is the one thing youve posted i can wholly agree on, at least necromutation doesn't interrupt my autotravel
oh wait, it does!
What? :o
+MR - good.

not worth a kiloChei of exp
+6 AC (Op) - good.

definitely not worth a kilochei

epx - piece of cake. Tm already have high Transmutations for obvious reason, and they need Necromancy for Death Door.

if i was training for deaths door i'd just use death door, it gives me torment immunity anyway!
also i generally dont get 20~ transmut on my Tm because they don't need it for the best transmutations (BH, hydra form, statue form if you hate yourself)

there is absolutely nothing wrong with a +9 vamp executioner's axe

Oh you got to try Op. Early game is challenging (use all you have, blowgun is really shine in D1-10), but mid-late not that so (if you with Chei of course).

You're so cute.

bennu = tomb monster put in to stop tomb being trivial to people that waste all the exp there on necromut
good point on ozo armor though, you can max out three skills to get the ac you would with two

Oh, you mean Fenix or Phoenix right? I killed them so fast (twice) that didn't notice any harm from them. It was a large crowd, I didn't know about their holy-branded attack, I just deside to kill them first because of their dangerous look.
About Ozocubu's Armour - I don't even need to pump more then usual 4 level in Ice School to get such spell in full power, it's Transmutation\Ice.
I rised it higher because of Condensation Shield, because I want some SH with my rMut lajatang.

no potions, 2.5 turn delay for ddoor/borg (much better spells), DU vulnerability, no regen spell
i see a lot of problems, and torment is really easy to deal with out of zigs anyway

No potions isn't a problem, I can really easily deal with it. DU vulnerability is a meh, the only time I suffered from it was revenant in a Tomb (as a DEWz), I don't remember for sure, but it's look like I make two steps in his LOS, and he cast DU several times.
And you know what? I just end Necromut and killed him.
No regen is a bullshit. Amulet of regen still function, also mutation Regeneration 1/2/3 works fine in necroform.
So the only real drawback is "2.5 turn delay for ddoor".

you literally said you had LCS for some inane reason

Not at this stage of game, when I go to Slime Pits.

if you werent worshipping chei you wouldn't have all these problems anyway (even with chei you have temporal distortion to make it move towards you!!)

And all these problems were sucessfully solved, you know.
Also I have insane melee damage thanks Chei, and could invest less in magic skill.

um what, it cures all the things
anyway if you dont spend a million turns 5ing around you don't get contaminated in hell
it helps to have regen, ie not be in lichform!

Well, I might have made a mistake, but I remember that last time I had to deal with contaminatiom (from art), I needed two potions. Maybe contamination was too strong.
Anyway 3 isn't that much for 4 Hells.
And I have great regen in lichform, Regeneration 2 and amulet of regeneration. And I can - just think about it! - end my lichform, cast regen, wait, cast lichform.
I'm a smart guy, huh?

with 27 all skills, i one shot things with tab too

It has nothing with my char.

bucklers block so little that it isnt too big of a deal (and iirc, multiple hits in one turn means your SH means less anyway!)

Shields block damage, in case Ice Fiend they can block huge damage if you haven't rCold.
It's better to block, than to eat that damage.
AC block damage to, and hamper your melee according to log.
I already can see you want you strip your char, right?

if i was training for deaths door i'd just use death door, it gives me torment immunity anyway!

Yeah, it gives you torment immunity lol. Use DD in Tomb\Hells\Panda every time you see someone who can cast it.
I was just wondering how long you'll last.

also i generally dont get 20~ transmut on my Tm because they don't need it for the best transmutations (BH, hydra form, statue form if you hate yourself)

And I do get 20+ Transmutations, because best transmutations are Statue Form and necromutations (or if I hate myself Hydra Form, BH).

please get better taste

Physician heal thyself.

ive never died to it either because i don't use lichform, but it's more of a threat than torment if you're really as bad at positioning as you make it sound

And I always use lichform, and can see no harm from it. )
Something here does not add up.
And I never said i'm bad at positioning.

My mother was almost raped please do not bring rape into this conversation it is very inconsiderate of you

Both my grandfather was wounded (a few times) in Great Patriotic War, and were almost killed.
27 million were killed.
Just once I was robbed, I was severely beaten. So any reference to kicks, punch, slap, strike, blow (oh, blowguns), beat.
So, we restrict usage of these words too?
Or you just stop to swing "rights"?

Honestly, in your initial chardump i would say blurry vision is a much bigger problem than all 10 of those good muts combined do good, and you did it to yourself.

I can make it, don't worry.

and some people like dungeon crawl: stone soup
does that mean it's good because they like it (no)

So no argumets? What a pity.

blade hands is the second best melee damage in the game after dragon form except it doesn't ruin your defenses what are you talking about (dform is still better on Op though)

BH is a SHIT (dog, bull, cow - choose) when we talk about Op.
In truth, I begin to doubt that you are aware of the fact we are talking about Op.

Just to stop these nonsensical talks about BH vs SF.

tasonir wrote:I did not set a god, so no stat boost. It can be somewhat art as much as science when you're setting up a character for fsim - there's a lot of little things you can set, assumptions you make, etc. For example, a lot of people in this thread thought you shouldn't jump straight to 27/27 skill, but if you're really only interested in extended, it could be justified. But most characters die before extended, so...

One of the biggest benefits of statue form in extended is going to be the torment resistance, anyways, which also doesn't show up here. I did think that it showed the defensive trade offs quite well, though. Statue form never takes more than 30 damage, with an average hit of only 8 damage, but gets hit twice as much as blade hands. This is without a shield, by the way, which is something else you could benefit from in statue form.

Here's with chei stats. I set piety to 200, aka max, aka 6 stars. Not sure why you'd want 5 stars, when everything else is maxed! still no shield, though, I'm lazy. What to do with stat gains was another question I had; I didn't really feel like running it three times so I just put 3 stats into each, my final stats were 28str/33int/34dex.

Edit: A shield lowers your aveffdam to 91.5, but I'm not screenshotting it again. Not sure how to copy and paste from the mac tiles game log :P

In my opinion, it's only worthwhile to pick up decks if you're trying to be friends with Nemelex Xobeh. I suppose there's some value in using one up quickly to train Evocations, but the risks of a bad draw are high enough that I'd rather use wands or focus my XP to do that.

Using a deck does nothing to "train evocations quickly" (Unless you're on auto-training, but gaming auto-training is dumb, just use manual training instead)

There are still some cards that can give you some beneficial effects, I found that evoking from a plain deck of defense with a TrBe before a tough fight was better than throwing small rocks at dire elephants.

What's with all this talk of Dispel undead being dangerous in necroform. Dispel undead needs line of sight, therefore, just like malmutation, it simply never happens to anyone unless you purposely let it happen.

While necromut is clearly overvalued by some, flat out ignoring the fact that it makes torment take 0% instead of 50% of your hps is pretty disingenuous. Torment immunity is THE reason to take necromut, mutation immunity is just icing on the cake.

This thread does illustrate the value of the foe list on this forum...
