Playing a felid has been an exercise in drudgery. This species should not be considered a "specialty" or "difficult" species and treated differently simply because it is listed as one of an equal number and list of choices in the beginning. Something needs to be done to rectify the inequality, or it should be eliminated.

At one point, he was XL27, and still unable to cast a single level 9 spell, despite extreme skill investments. Ridiculous. He had several things going for him, not the least of which were a raft of lovely mutations that he carried all the way to Zot, where he was immediately malmutated by OoFs and ancient liches and had to destroy all his by mutations quaffing the cure for the bad ones, which is a completely retarded mechanic that the vocals keep championing senselessly.

I had hoped to do another 15-runer, but it was clear that even in statue form (a game-changer, for sure) it would be impossible.

Overmatched on Zot:5, I decided to tele around, apported the orb, and ran. Died twice on the ascent, but made it to the surface without having to fight much of anything. Lame victory for a lame species. This episode has really soured my view on the game.

On the bright side, I must be getting better, because this win took only 35 attempts (but if you add up all the felid deaths, I'm sure it is twice that number, so no celebration just yet).

Re: YAVP: FeWz

I'm sorry, but you can't consider Conj 18 / Fire 17 as extreme skill investment... And note that none of the level 9 spells are mandatory to win the game : they're also suboptimal in a 3-runes game.

What about Op, Mu ? All races aren't equal, and that's great because :
  • It's hard to manage a good balance between species
  • It allows challenges for good players
  • They induce you into ptrying different playstyles
  • Nobody forces you to play Felids

Congratulations for your win though. You can consider your only 35 attemps as a moral victory :D

Op was fun to play. Fe is not.

The old adage of "all work and no play" applies to Crawl as equally as to Jack. Something to bear in mind as the game develops.

The only thing I'd fix about felids is the loss of exp level when losing an extra life. Otherwise they're fine.

Congrats!

Re: YAVP: FeWz

Well the 0.8 aut move, combined with the excessively low HP, means optimal felid play is mostly extremely boring kiting. Mummies and octopodes have no such option, so their optimal play isn't so tedious.

It could be argued that centaurs have the same problem, but at least their HP means they don't have to kite, they just have the option. Still, that doesn't mean it's not optimal to tediously kite stuff.

So I think the OP has a point that felids have a design flaw.

However, felids don't have any special -Wiz intrinsically, nor do they have especially bad int or stat growth, and their fire and conjuration apts aren't bad, so the inability to cast level 9 spells in zot really has nothing to do with felids. In fact, since felids can't train armour skill, I'd think they're slightly ahead of most characters in that regard, since they have that much more XP to throw around.

The mutation system is what it is. I don't personally find it bad, I kind of like the fleeting nature of mutations, however I wouldn't mind if malmutate were removed from orbs of fire. Sorry if you find my point of view senseless, I just haven't seen a proposed mutation system that I like better.

All of this. The spell skilling here seems a little weird to me, although I can imagine a course of play where it made sense at the time. I don't know that I'd bother with Transmutations / Statue Form, and I'd certainly repurpose some of that UC and Fire for more Dodging.

I agree that Fe encourages pretty unfun/degenerate play, but I also agree that if you don't like it, then barring self-imposed challenges ("but I HAVE to make greatplayer / get a top 5 finish in this tournament/ etc.") you can completely avoid it. This means I don't see much need for removal.

Last second edit: I think the real disadvantage Fe have as conjurers is considerably weaker spellpower because of the lack of access to enhancers. Their aptitudes are also pretty middling.

Re: YAVP: FeWz

Well, if 'you don't have to play it' was enough, we'd still have djinn, lava orcs, mountain dwarves, etc...

And the 'no weapons, no armor' limitations are unique to felids, so they're taking up design space if they're grossly against the design philosophy of the game. I'd rather have a fun, non-degenerate race with no weapons and armor. We know low HP races can be perfectly viable (see gr, vs), we know the other limited equipment race has its fans, and doesn't seem to encourage any degenerate play, so I really don't think felids are really OK as is.

It seems like the entire design of the race was based around the idea that you'd be kiting a lot. Kiting is the ultimate in tedious play.

Re: YAVP: FeWz

I dunno, I don't kite much as a Fe, maybe later in the game, but at least through orc and the lair they're quite fine with just adequate dodging training (25-30 EV takes you pretty far into the game)

They're also pretty good at stabbing things.

I'd argue that they're not significantly more fragile than spriggans who are faster, and who can also use polearms and aren't as good at long range destructive spells, making spriggans even more kite-y than felids.

I'll agree completely that Felids are a really tough race to play.
But overall, I think the only change that I'd like to see made to them is the return of the jump ability.
Maybe make that a species exclusive ability.

It goes without saying that my opinions here are as they pertain to my thoughts and ideas. I have never pretended otherwise. I am not now and will never be a "good player," "optimal player," "great player," or any other such title, nor do I have any interest in them. I play the games I play to find enjoyment in my own way, period.

So here's the rundown:

After killing 156 characters I had my first win, the first DEWz, with 5 runes. I followed that up with a 15 rune win with another DEWz just because I wanted to experience all the game has to offer. Oddly, it only took me two more tries to do that. Why DE first? One shouldn't even have to ask such a thing.

Next was a series of various and sundry experiments personally and in tournaments that disabused me firmly of any notion that I had any real grasp on the game. Magipi almost never spoke to me again after my dismal showing in the 0.15 tournament, and my participation in the CDSC was beneath laughable.

When I finally settled down to play for real again, I went with my original thought of trying an OpWz. So after murdering 52 of those, I finally won, again being able to enjoy all the game's offerings in a 15-rune extended run, as is only right. This character was a real treat to play. I enjoyed almost every one of those games, and had a lot of fun with it.

Next up was FeWz, because I love cats. Anyone who heard about this game's list of species choices and knows me would have guessed that I'd immediately select a felid to play first, because I am a cat person through and through. I was expecting to be entertained as I had been before, but it just never materialized, and the disappointment only grew. Cheating death seems almost pointless as a benefit, even when it clearly does benefit, though not really, often.

Long story short: I have to play so many games with a character to win one that I feel that I get to know them a little bit during the process. The way that they affect my sense of fun is all I came here to report. Should the opinions of some random joker who is experiencing a character for the first time be welcome by any, then that is who they are for, plain and simple.

So now it's on to FoWz. My numbers show previous Fo games as Am and Cj, but I have little recollection of them, and they were probably quite brief. My first FoWz game is going well. It's a pleasure to examine and wield weapons and armor again, and it'll be good training for me to play without using translocations. So far so good, but I ended up shafting myself often early and before I knew it I was deep on D:7 at XL4, yet I survived. Now XL10 and in the process of clearing D:5, already the possessor of a lovely randart trident and randart buckler. Visions of Pandemonium sugar plums dancing in my head.

That is just too sad for words. Cats are among the most sublime creatures, and those who do not yet know it are simply brutes.

Felids are pretty annoying to play with their extremely low hp and evasion based defenses. Finding the Amulet of Vitality on my FeCK made the game much more bearable (and Xom gave robust 3 in the end, which was also nice).

FeBe rocks (as all Be). I played one, died in Dis:7 with 5 runes. And that was without wands.

What I don't get is that people play Fe and don't train stealth. Stealth really helps you survive, no matter what the background.
