Re: CSDC S3 Week 2 - TeEE

Clarification on the bonuses, since someone brought it up in ##crawl. The skill requirement is for your BASE skill, not your skill if it's adjusted by any other means.

For example: if you decide to worship Ash, you cannot go above skill 10.0 before adding Ash's skill boost. So your skill might be 13.7 with Ash's skill boost, but that is okay as long as the unadjusted skill is less than or equal to 10.0. The same goes for using Oka's heroism.

Similarly if you cross-train a weapon, the additional cross-training boost does NOT count toward the 10.0 skill. If you are unclear what your base skill is, you can hit _ in-game to see the unadjusted levels for your skills.

I'll use whatever the RNG throws at me to survive.

Edit: Well, it worked for awhile, but I managed only 1 point.

Bah. Blork was on D4, guarding all three stairs into D4 (no hatches). I lured him off to one side by stairjumping, descend to the furthest D4 entry to make a run for it... and make it to the next room!

Next room over? Ogre, Pikel, and co. No escape options, no good items to help in a pinch, no resists, nothing but flimsy tengu death.

Re: CSDC S3 Week 2 - TeEE

A spiny frog on Lair:5 caught me while I was trying to escape from another group of monsters and lethally poisoned me in one hit. Having no !curing or really much of anything else at all, I committed seppuku. http://dobrazupa.org/morgue/magicpoints/morgue-magicpoints-20141018-234011.txt

  Code:
11557 magicpoints the Basher (level 11, -4/82 HPs)
Began as a Tengu Earth Elementalist on Oct 18, 2014.
Was a High Priest of Okawaru.
Engulfed by their own flame (12 damage)
... on level 5 of the Lair of Beasts.
The game lasted 01:59:52 (11491 turns).

That was an excruciating attempt. That Te found barely any potions or scrolls at all, and what little I had was rapidly burning away to merely scrape by. I thought my AC would be pretty decent for Lair, but I was still taking a beating from everything and running away constantly. Maybe it was the low Str dragging down attempts at meleeing? I didn't have much to do besides melee though, as I didn't find a book until a minor magic shortly before dying.

Did you know that TeEE is not a very good combo?

Re: CSDC S3 Week 2 - TeEE

Weird combo. Tried it offline to see if there is a good strategy: first TeEE trained Fighting until finding a weapon and then died with Mace and M&F 2 after instantly waking up 2 Adders after turning a corner, second TeEE trained Earth and then Conjurations, died to a single Adder after missing 2 Stone Arrows and then missing several times with dagger. Some luck is needed to survive an early Adder and I see no reliable strategy :(

I ran another offline character in wizmode to see exact value of spell power. TeEE starts with spell power 8 for Sandblast (stone-wielded damage is 2d6.67, no stones damage is 1d10), got to spell power 9 (2d7 and 1d10.25) at XL 2 and spell power 11 (took Int boost) at XL 3 (2d7.67 and 1d10.75). Spell power for Stone Arrow was 6, damage 3d5.75 (but no triple AC reduction of course). So yes, casting Stone Arrow at Adders was my mistake. It looks like it is a bad idea to train Earth Magic for spell power at all unless player is going to stay focused on Conjurations as the difference between 2d6.67 (XL1) and 2d7.67 (XL3) is pretty small and this is the extreme case when all XP goes into Earth Magic (trainining it from 2.1 to 3.0).

Splattery splat! I decided to branch into fire as soon as possible, because I have good experience with TeCj 》firestorm. Book of Tempests on D5 made it super easy, later I found hat of alchemist in the shop and took robe of the archimagi from orcish wizard. And ring of wizardry came in handy! Vehumet, fireball, option to get nearly all resistances and good spellpower even with 10 skill was cool. But then I decided to blast that pesky invisible sky beast with hill giant adjacent to me. Due to energy random (i suppose) it came closer that I think to. I blasted myself for a good amount of damage and got hit with GSC for 30+ in the same turn :(

I lost 57% HP during a single turn... It is less than expected (I thought I would die instantly but I needed those 3 points) and now I am still standing adjacent to it without scrolls of blinking. I tried moving but the hydra followed me and there is no room to run away so I cannot take advantage of Te speed.
Ok, I don't have scrolls of blinking but I do have Blink 1 mutation (10% failure rate).

To clarify the bonuses for this week, it looks like the scoring functions actually allow skill <= 10.9. So as long as your skill doesn't reach 11.0, you will qualify for the bonus.

When is the tier II bonus taken in account ?

I just got the Swamp rune with no skill above 9.9, but Kramell keeps telling me I only have 5 points... (T1, god, branch x2, unique)... Should I get a second one befoe my skills reach 11 ?

Edit : Kramin told me about CSZO missing milestones, no problem !

Before you stated this, I fucked up keeping track, got to 10.5, remembered the restriction at the point where I could have gone and done what was necessary, but instead made a deliberate choice to do something else because I thought I was disqualified (the initial post said "10.0"). This saddens me.

Re: CSDC S3 Week 2 - TeEE

I managed to screw it up twice-over. I went from below 10 to 10.2 by killing a Sky Beast, realized that the milestones wouldn't support checking 10.0 versus 10.9 and said I would play as though I was going for the bonus anyway, in case it still counted, and switched all my training to another skill. A little while later, I got the "you reached skill level 11!" message, and discovered that I'd somehow later turned the skill back on by accident.

At that point I decided why not just skip Lair and go for the one-time bonus, but after clearing Dungeon I got killed in Orc while playing on autopilot. Turns out when Fannar walks into sight, it's better to notice it and react than give him a bunch of free turns while you aren't wearing your rC+ ring.

My morgue file does not contain messages about getting gossamer/decaying runes and tier 2 bonus is not listed. I am sure I had no skills above 10.0 when I got first rune. Could you please investigate what happened? I do have some lua scripts in my rc file and sometimes I get a message "Your game ended unexpectedly" after saving.

This is probably due to the same bug that mopl encountered, it is fixed now but for a brief period there was a crawl trunk bug which made it not record rune milestones. I had a look at your log/tv to confirm and you should have the bonus. I'll tell moose so he can fix the scoreboard.

@WalkerBoh: I would actually suggest you run it on stable rather than trunk if you do it again.

Challenging build early on, but very appropriate Tier I & II with Kiku, and endgame is quite OK
