Abyss, =*Tele

Is ring of *tele the best item for Abyss? It frequently teleports you into a new area with (almost always) no monsters around, for free.
That's a silly name!

Yes, as long as you have some food and perferably non-zero evocations it's completely insane. If you don't see what you need (items you want, stairs, runevault, exit) then immediately activate it, and explore while waiting for the teleport. If you see something you do want, activate it to cancel the teleport (with low evo, might need to read a scroll if the find warrants it) and take off the ring, get the item, and repeat.

Yes. I had bad case of teleportitis once. There's nothing like being teleported away from the gate leading out of the abyss when you're standing right on it.

I don't see any reason why this is exclusive to the Abyss; as long as you take it off when exploring levels with known dangerous vaults (Elf:3, Lair:8, all rune floors), ring of *tele is a net positive. Free teleports at the cost of randomly teleporting you places you were going to go anyways. It's one of those good-but-ultra-annoying items, like weapons of distortion. Of course, at the point in the game where you can randomly teleport around the dungeon without worries, you hope to have better rings and plenty of scrolls of tele... making it most useful to corner cases like Ru worshipers who sacrifice scrolls.

Re: Abyss, =*Tele

The difference is that randomly teleporting in the Abyss is a lot better than teleporting in the Dungeon. It's not good to randomly teleport in the dungeon unless you need to teleport. If you need to then yes a ring of free teleports is good but that's not what they were talking about.

Re: Abyss, =*Tele

As movement only reveals a handful of tiles and tele potentially many more I assume it will reduce time spent in the Abyss.

Re: Abyss, =*Tele

well, and additionally because of how monster gen works in abyss, the worst place to be is almost always where you currently are, so teleports are almost always beneficial in abyss
(this is pretty obviously not true in normal parts of crawl)
