Bows on a Deep Dwarf (as secondary attack)
I'm running a Deep Dwarf Fighter of Makhleb, and it's going great so far. I got very lucky with gear and have most of my resistances filled out and am at 30AR/3EV in some Crystal Plate Mail at mid-Lair. I'm fighting with axes, and have nothing spectacular (+0 Antimagic Broad Axe), but have +8 slaying and am at min-delay so things are dying nicely. Mainly, I just need a decent ranged backup for things like Hydras. I was going to go crossbows, with the +1 aptitude and just to try them for the first time, but then I came across a +9 Short Bow { Freeze, Int+3 }.
People are down on short bows, but +9 with +8 slaying seems good as an alternate attack, but I'm wondering if it's worth it with a -3 aptitude. Alternately, I could just use evocables for ranged situations, as I already found 2 Lamps of Fire, and it's so easy to pump Evo on DDs.
