YAFVP: DEFE of Veh, thanks for all the help!

So I lied about quitting crawl.

Cleared Shoals, Spider, Vaults 1-4, currently cleared Depths 2. This is the furthest I've been with a character. Having a pretty easy time of it so I don't anticipate problems in Depths 3-5, but after that I'm dreading Vaults 5 since my resistances are pretty weak and I'm going to run out of places to collect easy XP soon.

I have a +2 robe of MR in stash. Not sure if mottled dragon armor is better.

Skilling advice appreciated. Thanks guys.

I am not a professional. That being said:

IMO spellcasting is going to have to be higher if you want to lose that hunger and make regular use of your level 6 and above spells. You've got a truckload of food and gourmand, but you may find that won't be enough when you get into the more unnatural areas and you have to use those spells regularly. Or when you want to wear a better amulet.

Also, wield that war axe, or at least put it on switch. Screw the noise; you're blasting things anyway, and you've got some necromancy trained to take advantage of the pain brand. But mainly, that +3 int will do wonders, and being able to hack things to bits when they're close will save some MP for the rest. To put it on switch, using '=', assign it to letter 'a' and assign your staff to letter 'b', and then you can swap them for each other just by pressing the apostrophe key ( ' ).

The main idea of spellcasting skill is to get spell slots for new spells and, to a lesser degree, more MP and some spell power. Spell hunger is usually not a problem, so SPC 14 should be alright at the moment unless you need a new spell.

I just want to add that you can get spell slots for fire storm in a different way:

  • push SPC
  • gain new levels, you will soon be at XL 23
  • forget unimportant spells (like flame tongue) either by reading amnesia or by destroying an appropriate book

I usually like to do as much Crypt and Elf as I can before I venture into Vault:5. I haven't found myself in a position where I'd rather go do slime before it too, but it's something I'd consider as well if I were worried about things. But, basically, I like to set myself up with enough XP that Vaults:5 isn't a huge deal. And, well... while I've certainly Fire Stormed my way through it, the noise is a huge disadvantage.

I mean, Fire Storm is, of course, a great spell, but it's not necessary for a 3-rune game. Bolt of fire is a perfectly good spell and can carry you just fine. If you do want to get Fire Storm going, I would advise first getting your defenses into a better position. Honestly, I'd recommend doing that anyway. I'd be raising Dex when the option arose, and I'd also spend any enchant armor scrolls I had on those robes and cloak. Don't bother with armor skill- the archmagi brand is fantastic. Ditch the amulet of gourmand and wear the Brooch of Shielding for the extra AC and EV- warding and N+ are a nice bonus. More dodging isn't a bad idea.

If you drop Flame Tongue and gain a couple more levels, you wouldn't have to train more spellcasting to learn Fire Storm. (Sticky Flame won't be too useful for much longer either, so that'd help.) I personally might put a couple more levels into it around this point, but defenses first. Your resistances are actually really good compared to a lot of games I've had recently, especially with Brooch of Shielding.

Spell hunger isn't that big a deal, IMO. Be mindful of it, but don't train spellcasting up to obscene levels chasing hungerless spells when there's better things to train. Staff of power is always a thing, which I love having on my Veh-bies because they don't have god-channeling like Sif-bies.

I'd be extra careful using a crystal ball of energy with that low of Evocations. If you want to make more consistent use of it, I'd consider raising Evo after raising defenses. But, I'd probably rather use Sublim and a staff of power (if you have one in your game somewhere, anyway) until the defenses are improved- especially since you'd have to wear that amulet of clarity instead of the Brooch.

Well, actually my suggestion was to get the Slime rune, and forget Vaults:5.

I also don't think there is a situation when "Vaults:5 isn't a huge deal". Its danger level is comparable to Zot:5.

Hah, you have rodney's ring. Good thing it wasn't his amulet or he'd make your life miserable.

Mottled dragon armour is nice if you have the enchant armour scrolls to enchant it up. Or if you feel that what your character is lacking is a good AC score and you need to fix that. But it does have the big problem that it will delay Your Str might be a little low for it, though; steam dragon armour might be a better choice if any hides exist.

I've even been liking troll leather armour as of late, but that's not everyone's cup of tea.

Your MR is indeed a little low for defending against dangerous enchantments, although that's probably not a big thing to worry about in Vaults:5. Definitely fix that if you try to tackle Elf.

If you do want to get Fire Storm going, I would advise first getting your defenses into a better position.

Notice two things:
  • He's already really close to being able to cast Firestorm. He might even be able to do it now with wizardry
  • He already has moderate fighting and high dodging
Sure, it's probably worth dumping enough exp into armour to get one more AC point, or maybe even two, but other than that I believe focusing skill training on anything but Fire storm right now is a mistake in his current situation. Maybe that's less clear if he switches to MDA right now.

Actually, this is the point where the OP should train 3.7 levels of armour skill to get one more point of AC. It is cheaper than training one more level of dodging or fire magic or conjurations, for example.

Vaults 5 requires even more MR than Elf does: Ancient Lich has Paralysis/Banishment, Vault Sentinel has Mark, Deep Elf Sorcerer has Banishment. I would definitely put on ring of MR instead of magical power.

Thanks for the help!

I forgot to mention: there's a Robe of Augmentation (http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Robe_of_Augmentation) sitting in a shop for around 1200GP, which I can easily afford. I've been enjoying the Archmagi brand so I've been putting off getting it. But it will give me an extra +2 to AC vs a normal robe, and the +4 to dex will give me more EV, and the +4 to Int will put firestorm into the castable region pretty much immediately. I'll ditch sticky flame and flame tongue and grab Firestorm, per various folk's advice.

Aule: Getting enough SPC to make Bolt of Fire hungerless for spamming without Gourmand is tempting - based on my Augmented Int, I'll need to push SPC from 14 (current) to 17, which really isn't a whole lot in the midgame for a DE with +3 apts. Will consider that after improving my defenses.

Magipi, I have neither rCorr nor stasis nor rMut, and shaky MR even with that ring. I feel like slime pits would be too risky with this gearing. I concur that Vaults 5 is also risky for a newbie playing a noisy caster. But, not sure what other options there are for finding the gear for Slime. I don't want to risk Elf 3 with a squishy. Maybe try crypts if I don't get lucky with the rest of Depths.

Nemora, thanks for the advice. I'm going to put my few level ups in Dex. Couldn't find any staffs of power. Thanks for tips on CBoE, I concur. Tried the CBoE a couple of times and was underwhelmed, seems like it either helps you win a situation you're already confident of winning, or it makes a normal situation into a life-threatening one - talk about worse than useless - I think it's mainly for folks trying for high scores with low turn counts.

Sprucery, thanks for the tip about 3.7 Armor = +1 AC. I had no idea that it had an effect on robes, because I was disregarding the low base AC. But, Base AC: robes=2, helmet, boots, cloak, gloves=4, total 6. So, 6 * 25.7/22 = 7.01. Yup, that's it, 3.7 is the magic number. I'll remember that. Next increment is 6 * 29.4/22 = 8.02, so I'd need 7.4 armor to get +2 AC. Probably not gonna do that with the DE's -2 apt.

Sandman, thanks for the advice, will start wearing the MR ring and ditch magical power since my Sublimation is going pretty well. I'll keep Rodney's ring on the other slot and swap in the Amulet of Warding. I might swap to the Axe to get another MR+ when facing dangerous spellcasters, but I think the staff is a better tradeoff normally for smacking and fire-enhancing and fire resist.

Forgot to mention, I also have a necronomicon. My current necro skill is at 8. There's a couple of life-saving spells in there, but I suspect it's irrelevant unless I want to do extended?

Well, if you can afford getting Borg. Revivification before extended because you are happy with offense/defense, go for it. Some players prefer Death's Door but it is dual school spell so is unlikely to be castable before extended.

Hungerlessness should never be a priority, if you run out of food from spellcasting hunger, it means you've either sat around for far too long not doing anything productive, or you're trying to cast high level spells way before you need them, and haven't spent enough on defensive skills. Spellcasting is a good skill, it's just that hungerless casting isn't why you should train it.

Nemora, thanks for the advice. I'm going to put my few level ups in Dex. Couldn't find any staffs of power. Thanks for tips on CBoE, I concur. Tried the CBoE a couple of times and was underwhelmed, seems like it either helps you win a situation you're already confident of winning, or it makes a normal situation into a life-threatening one - talk about worse than useless - I think it's mainly for folks trying for high scores with low turn counts.
It is useful only very very very late in the game, at the point at which it's useful and you've invested the XP to make it work, you probably don't need it.

I might swap to the Axe to get another MR+ when facing dangerous spellcasters, but I think the staff is a better tradeoff normally for smacking and fire-enhancing and fire resist.

Siegurt's comments seem to ring true. I'll skip the robe of augmentation, stick with archmagi (there's a +2 set I can get for pretty cheap in Orc), get 3.7 in armor skill, forget about SPC until there's a spell that I really need, and push forward with getting Firestorm castable in the absence of new gear/book developments.

I think it is easier to calculate the magic number by 22/6=3.66

Actually, I would recommend getting a bit more spellcasting on this guy.

First of all, spellcasting (with +3 apt no less) is at 14, which is so low compared to conjurations/fire of ~20 that I bet you'd actually get better power and success per experience input by raising spellcasting some more. I'd say get it to 16 or 17.

Second, having max hunger on LCS while BoF and haste also have #### means that with a bit of bad luck or minor lapse in attention, you could find yourself at "Near Starving" in a tough fight, which is way more likely to kill you than running out of permafood and is thus a reasonable concern.

And hungerless (or near-hungerless) level 6 spells, while not a priority, are a convenience that DE's aptitudes can usually afford on a level 20+ character.

Other than the "don't train spellcasting" thing though I agree with Nemora and Siegurt.

I do want to add that on the HECj I've been playing, I used Fire Storm and cleared V:5 without more than a couple small hitches, but I did enough other stuff that I was XL 27 first, and I was using a combination of Fire Storm and Tornado.

I did have to stair dance a little (that's normal), and there was one moment where a dragon pushed me off the stairs and a vault guard locked it down while I was low mana. But since I'd already cleared most of the level, the random tele was not horribly dangerous.

So it worked out fine, but I made sure to be prepared first, and Tornado helped make the fact that I was drawing the entire level to my location not so terrible.

However, I wouldn't have gone for two 9 level spells of different schools if I wasn't trying to build my first zig-clearing character. It's definitely a huge XP investment.

Let's see. The next level of fire magic would cost 1387 skill points. The next two levels of spellcasting would cost 625+685=1310 skill points. So yes, it is better to train spellcasting to 16. Then one level of fire magic. Then one more level of spellcasting (744). Then one level of fire magic and conjurations each (1513). Then one level of spellcasting (804). Then... OK I'm going too far ;)

Optimising skill training is great fun, isn't it?

Well, that's why I didn't wizmode test or crunch numbers or anything, but it isn't hard to estimate roughly just from experience with the game. One level of spell casting is half as good as one level of conjurations *or* fire since it is a two-school spell we are talking about, and in addition you help out other stuff like deflect missiles and LCS. And if you have some spells with pretty high hunger on them still, it isn't a bad idea to reduce that, not so much due to permafood concerns (unless you've had some remarkably strange luck with drops) but because getting low on satiation while still in a combat situation is pretty easy if you aren't really OCD about watching your hunger, which is about as much fun as optimizing skill training.

With conjurations and fire around 20 and taking the above into account, I figured that, if I were playing this character, I'd invest a few more levels in spellcasting before going for more conjurations or fire.

I try not to worry about what's "optimal," strictly speaking (which would involve switching skills around constantly to a ridiculous degree) and yes, it would not be unreasonable for this character to increase fire/conjurations next time fisheye wants more damage. — That is, if this character dies (knock on wood) it is extremely unlikely that the death could be even tenuously attributable to how, exactly, skills were trained at this juncture.

Nonetheless taking spellcasting as high as 17 before training more fire/conj is better than vice versa, and since fisheye was advised otherwise in this thread, I offered a contrary perspective.

Yes, I think that was a good catch. Often people don't notice that sometimes it indeed is worthwhile to train spellcasting for spellpower.

And yes, personally I do enjoy "optimising" skill training to a ridiculous degree ;)

Actually what I said was "Spellcasting is a good skill, it's just that hungerless casting isn't why you should train it." Not "Don't train spellcasting"

"It's as cheap if not cheaper than training spell skills for getting more spell power" is an good reason to train spellcasting. Even "It's cheap to knock the hunger cost down to a more managable level" isn't a bad reason.

The story so far...

Cleared depths, cleared Crypt (luckily, no ancient liches), picked up Discord as my crowd control spell, did Elf 1-2 for kicks, got MR to ++++. and then decided to go to Slime with no rCorr or rMut since acid no longer eats equipment in 0.15+. Had a surprisingly easy time of slime despite lack of resists since nothing survived in LOS beyond 3 turns. TRJ died in 3 casts of firestorm. Grabbed the slimy rune, descended in Zot. Discord vs draconian warbands = hilarious.

Now I'm about to go down the stairs to my first Zot:5. What should I do?

Yes, this advice could perhaps be condensed to "KIll dudes *carefullly* grab the orb, ascend"

The "dudes" in question are primarily: dragons, draconians, Ancient liches, orbs of fire, orb guardians, electricity golems, Killer Klowns, and moths of wrath.

In order of "things that you should kill asap"
1. Moths of wrath
2. Ancient Liches
3. Orbs of fire
4. Electricity golems
5. Dragons (Only because they're ranged)
6. Orb guardians
7. Killer clowns
8. Draconians


"Ascend" can perhaps be expanded to "go upstairs, find the fastest way to each up stair case and go there, ignore stuff that wants to fight you, unless you can't. rest on upstaircases by preference, wands of digging are a good thing to use to make your trip quicker."

0.16-a0-248 crashed when I escaped with the orb... with a "range check error 27/27", I'm guessing it couldn't handle being at Dungeon Level 0. Luckily the save file was still there so I downgraded to stable v0.15 just for the win.

I've actually backed up the save file to verify that bug. I'm going to get the latest devel to see if it is still happening, if so I'll file a ticket. EDIT: Just checked again, the bug is not present on 0.16-a0-306, so we're all good.
