YAVP: DgFi, 15 runes

Another one of these. It's just too easy compared to a casting playstyle.

This time the RNG was quite generous:

- plenty of shops
- plenty of acquirement scrolls
- enough Cure Mutations (curing mutations is always a problem with Demigods)

Playing without god hurts. Congrats, in my opinion it's always something special to win a 15-runer with a demigod.

Well, every character is too easy with mutation-scumming.
  Code:
2574 | D:4      | Gained mutation: You are partially covered in rugged brown scales (AC +1, +3% HP). [potion of mutation]
2574 | D:4      | Gained mutation: You tend to lose your temper in combat. [potion of mutation]
2574 | D:4      | Gained mutation: Your vision is a little blurry. [potion of mutation]
  2575 | D:4      | Quit the game

Next game
  Code:
1930 | D:3      | Gained mutation: Your spells are a little easier to cast, but a little less powerful. [potion of mutation]
1930 | D:3      | Gained mutation: You have large cloven feet. [potion of mutation]
1930 | D:3      | Gained mutation: You can translocate small distances at will. [potion of mutation]
...
138215 | D:$      | Escaped with the Orb!

Re: YAVP: DgFi, 15 runes

So by your estimation, what happened in the first 2,000 turns negates any successes of the following 136,000 turns? That seems, well, rather negative. And the phrase, "mutation scumming;" how awesomely derisive is that? How many times did this occur? Once?

It's a win, it's 15 runes, and it's online. There's no fault to be found here. IMO, if you're going to pick on this, then also hold those who create a new account for a better win rate to the same standard of "scumminess." But there's quite enough judgmentalism in this world. It really has no place in a game environment.

I am not blaming OP for the mutation scumming and the win is a good achievement. I just disagree with phrase "too easy".

Re: YAVP: DgFi, 15 runes

I want to apologize for snapping earlier. I was still smarting from the snide comment of a random spectator in my game last night, who came in, commented about the length of time I have played my current game, and left. This is no excuse for my tone, but I am sorry for it all the same. Judgmental views about judgmental views are just as much a double standard as any other. To each their own.

Off topic: I'd like to explain why somebody could have made this comment about your playing time.

Crawl is a tough game. For most players it takes a long time to win their first game, so the players are usually very proud afterwards.

The point is: "You need a challenge or it gets boring" (Tolias). A nearby challenge for new crawl-winners is to get a 15-runer. But what to aim for afterwards? There are a lot of possible challenges, I just want to mention four popular ideas:

  • win with every species, class, god...
  • get species/class/combo highscores - this usually implies turncount speedrunning
  • real time speedrunning
  • go for streaks
So this "random spectator" seems to like real time speedrunning. So maybe he just wanted to tell you that he is - in this point - superior to you. Don't worry! Maybe he's a great real time speedrunner with (from my personal point of view) ridiculous high turncount, or he is a great real time speedrunner and never got a streak - or whatever.

Re: YAVP: DgFi, 15 runes

<offtopic> Even if a great player who wins 15 runes in 30 minutes and 5k turns tells me that I am playing too slowly I wouldn't care. Some players enjoy playing the whole game. I love to use autoexplore for every level, I love to do Elf and Crypt, I love to think long and hard which jewelry to put on, which spells to learn, which spells I would like to find to make the character more powerful, how to optimize EV/AC, compare with previous characters etc. Probably those players who try to win ASAP don't enjoy playing crawl but only enjoy winning it. Sometimes they even start whining that crawl is too long :) </offtopic>
