Will you at least try Sif Muna to change something?

Species that are definitely worth trying as a blaster mage: gargoyle, tengu, draconian. Octopode is a challenge, I don't recommend it.

Also, try conjurer. You lose versatility (compared to Wz), but gain more firepower once you get the Battlesphere online (which is ASAP).

That has already been done well over 100 times, my friend. I began the quest with Sif as my guide, "religiously." Vehumet offered far better benefits for this character and my style of play. I can quantify them for you.

  1. no invocations
  2. extended spell ranges
  3. freely given spells of desired quality, regardless of books found
  4. miscast reduction on desired spells
  5. return of spell power

As to number 1: no invocations means more XP to spend elsewhere.

As to number 2: extended range, since this is plane geometry: is an exponential boon. The simplest case also explains my affection for polearms. Take a weapon, range=1, and it can affect all squares adjacent or at its corners. Extend that weapon's range by 1 and it can hit three times as many targets, as depicted in the graphic:

  Code:
. . . . . . .           . . . . . . .
. . . . . . .           . X X X X X .
. . X X X . .           . X X X X X .
. . X @ X . .    vs.    . X X @ X X .
. . X X X . .           . X X X X X .
. . . . . . .           . X X X X X .
. . . . . . .           . . . . . . .

 = 8 targets            = 24 targets
(No, console players, this is not a nightmare attack of orb guardians.)

Granted, this multiple over the alternative shrinks as the initial range increases, but it's still quite hefty, especially on later levels (like Zigs), where you want to affect as many at your LOS as possible.

As to number 3: this needs no explanation. In the early game, getting useful spells can determine whether or not you can even safely continue the game. Can't tell you how many times I finished Orc and Lair finding no spell books to make use of, and was forced to continue in to deeper, more dangerous environs greatly underpowered by spells, Sif's promises notwitstanding. Vehumet is guaranteed to give you the spells you need, if you're playing a character focused on destructive spells.

As to number 4: I don't think it would have even been possible to create a wizard that could spam fire storm, glaciate, (and shatter, though I used it rarely after trying it) without the 33% reduction in failure rate. That's one corpulently fat bonus for this particular character.

Finally, as to number 5: the return of spell power for killing. Some who have watched me have commented upon my willingness to take on large mobs as "risky." But in large part this is done to maximize my return on investment in Vehumet. The more enemies I kill at once, the greater will be the returned MP, which functions as a limited form of channeling, but which costs no XP in evocations. It is not foolproof and limited, and in many cases a balance cannot be achieved, but as the game progresses into the more difficult depths, and the wider area spells come online, this return on investment pays off handsomely.

Imagine running your zigs with the extended range, having all the XP to spare for not raising invocations, and spamming your tornado and glaciate on mobs, completely replenishing your MP every time you take out a crowd, repeat and rinse.

I think it's time you switch to Vehumet. :)

I promise I will :D I was too used to Sif Muna channeling, because i NEVER EVER EVER EVER trained anything that wasn't spells at first. After losing like trillion times i learned that the game was much easier learning a bit of melee and a lot of dodging even on spellcasters, but was too much used to channeling and to large number of books.

Quadratic boon. An exponential boon would keep tripling every time you added 1. </petpeeve>

Is it really a boon for most spells?
Fireball still affects 9 tiles no matter Vehumet or not it.
Bolt of Fire still affects a single line (8 tiles with Vehumet, 7 without).

Think of all those times you were trying to target something and it was just out of reach, darnit. Yeah, it's a boon, especially early-mid-game when you need every advantage to survive. And it's a quadratic boon! :) (That sounds like a great randart name.)

Coda

Executions End

My satiation is now complete. I have feasted on the power to roam dangerous places, and to take on the worst the game has to offer with near-impunity. I have become myself a wizard of this deep elf wizard, bringing another character with lesser beginnings not only to a win, but also to every location in the game, gathering all 15 runes available there. I defeated all challenges, and became not only a master of the elements, but also a master of escape from all harrowing circumstances, and there were many.

I am by no means an expert. It took me a very long time to do (as someone so rudely pointed out as I was playing it), but it was all very thrilling and frightening the first time, as it should be. The parts that were not new (the beginning) were also much harder, this time, too. It is not a streak, even so close on the heels of my first win, but it feels like a streak to me, and that's all that really matters.

As to the dead wizard in between the two wins, the staffer who committed the hidden execution has been fired, and the governor has now officially abolished the death penalty for all deep elf wizards, to remain in perpetuity.

My order of events is certainly questionable, but it worked for me. Pan was very scary at first, because I'd never seen any of the monsters before, so I bailed out early so that I could take on the Abyss. But I bailed through the Abyss (which I'd seen a few times and was more comfortable with), so first I had to escape the Abyss to restock and reequip to take on the Abyss. When I finally got the Abyssal rune (on level 5), I had only the choices of Pan and Hell, so I went back to Pan, eventually becoming acclimated to it, and having some great fun with it. I also took advantage of several Zigs there to beef up the character for his eventual Hell trips.

The big four pan lords were easy by the time I met them. Only Lom gave me any grief, with his tornado. (It ain't no fun when the rabbit's got a gun.) I suppose I was fairly lucky on the frequency of the runes there, but the last one seemed to take a while.

The Hell branches were a piece of cake, pretty much. By that time, my spell choices were solidified, and I had become comfortable using the orb of energy to channel, knowing that an eventual result would bring the annoyance of zero MP. But it was an annoyance, only. The power afforded this wizard by such rapid MP gain cannot be overstated, and this technique allowed him to basically walk all over everything in his path. The Hell lords themselves were no match. The only one that was respectfully tough was Dispater. I could clearly see that fighting him with anything less would be very difficult. But he was not at all difficult for this wizard.

The ascension was the epitome of uneventuality, as if I had left alive no lords of evil to wreak their vengeance.

You can find the notes in the full morgue file, if you're interested in more.

As a side note: the runes are not listed on the screen or in the morgue summary in the order they were acquired. I'm wondering if that's a bug.

Watching the Watchers

It is not only the game itself that I am learning, but also people. The spectator window has been a thing of interest to watch, and each person represented by some alphanumeric avatar who has appeared there has been different, and as idiosyncratic as any other. There are some generalities that I have observed, though.

  • Friendly: greets you, stays a while
  • Hostile: snarks at you, leaves quickly
  • Inscrutable: anon, silent as a spectre (can one even reply when anon?)
  • Jabber: has a heated discussion with another jabber that continuously scrolls as you play
  • Lifeguard: logged-in, but quiet until giving life-saving advice
  • Seeker: believes (incorrectly) that you must be an expert to have an XL27 roaming in dire places, so asks for your specific
  • advice about his or her own character (that you've never played)

But the best spectators transcend generalities to become part of the fabric of the game. Those I thank, many I'm sure I've neglected to remember, but to each of you who has devoted thought and concern for this stranger's benefit I say you are among the best of our human species because you behave this way in an unremarkable, anonymous cloud of digital ephemera, for no one else to see, just because it's nice.

That is awesomeness, plain and simple.

Next Steps

All right, what would be absolutely the most abhorrently difficult combo to play in this game, hands-down? Suggestions?

Re: YASD: Ongoing DEWz Executions

Congrats! This was impressive. I thought that winning this one for 15 runes is against the odds (you had to play extensively on unfamiliar territory, facing unknown dangers), but you seem to be a fast learner (certainly faster than me, I splatted my first 3 tries in extended).

As for challenge, MuCK is certainly the most infamous combo (pairing the worst species with the worst god is apt to give you a horrible result). However, I offer you something different, or rather 2 somethings:

First, in the tournament, there is a "Nemelex's Choice" combo, chosen from those that were won less than 8 times online. (And another one is chosen once the previous one is won 5 times in the tournament). As you can guess, these combos are played rarely because they are not good.

Second, after the tournament there will be the 3rd season of the Sudden Death Challenge series (we hope), organized by WalkerBoh. There you play random combos, made harder by some challenges. It is great fun. You can see the forums of the first two seasons in The Dart Board: viewforum.php?f=23

you're not supposed to abandon Xom for Chei though

:D
An interesting addendum: in the 0.15 tournament, Chei is the only god with no wins (although not for long, Tasonir has 14 runes already).

Re: YASD: Ongoing DEWz Executions

I would not suggest to play the hardest combo. That would make you think (mistakenly) that you are expert and lose interest to crawl. I would suggest playing characters with different play style. Something like MiBe/SpEn/OpTm/FeVM/MuSu/CeHu/GhMo/TrHu/KoAs/HaHu/DrWz/NaVM/FoFi/VSMo/MfIE/OgWz/HEAE/TeFE/DsNe/DDHe/GrEE. I am sure I am missing some and you can add unusual gods to change it even more (for example, SpEn of Kiku/Ashenzari/Chei can result in very different game experience).
