Could we chalk up Deep Elf Priests' smiting to some specific god? I'd say Vehumet, but it could be any other different deity. It might even be a random god from a subset, making elves polytheist.

The difference is as simple as a message change, and would add a tiny bit of flavor without impacting gameplay.

I can conceive the counter-argument that "vehumet/insertanothergodhere doesn't smite", but well, Orc High Priests can summon demons and a player character orc jesus can't (well, I think it's still possible, but wholly unrelated).

Because entirely removing one (or two, not sure) monsters from the deep elf repertoire instead of changing the appearance of "their god" in a couple of messages to an actual deity name or, you know, not doing anything at all and keeping things as they are, IS AN ENTIRELY PROPORTIONATE RESPONSE.

Yes. They worship the spooky nameless god, GOD_NAMELESS. (Likewise mummies & draconians, if you were wondering.)

Of course, when Mnoleg is moved to guard the Pan entrance in Elf (in 0.17), the elves will be rethemed to worship him, instead. (And killing Mnoleg will disable their divine powers.) But no rush...

...Honestly though; since their only offered abilities (malign offering and hellfire) would be like a weaker version of drain life (more healing to summons, but only one target) and more reliable 'greater destruction' respectively and don't really have a design space unique to themselves; best it could ever be as a player god is abilities for RandGods.

I agree that being more specific with enemy priest messages would be an improvement, though I think using one of the temple gods is the wrong approach. Something like "The deep elf priest invokes the aid of its nameless/mysterious/ancient/whatever god against you" would clarify that these guys have the aid of a specific deity, different from those that the player can worship, and prevents awkward questions like "why does Vehumet smite for them but not me?" There doesn't need to be a name or any further explanation; the player can fill those gaps himself.
