proposal: make a town outside the dungeon

Don't you think that ascending with the orb is a bit anticlimatic?

What if we add a road leading from the dungeon trough a forest to town and there people would meet you at the gate and cheer for your success? This would add so much flavour!

Oh and before you have the orb, you could 1) visit some shops in the town or 2) they wouldn't let you in and say "come back when you've got the orb!"

I like that there is no pre-dungeon, it makes the dungeon feel distinctly isolated from the outside world.

It also means you get straight to the game with little faff.

Out of curiosity, are there any roguelikes out there that do something like this (-> don't end when you beat the main objective of the game, and have a peaceful post-game only destination)?

Rogue Legacy has a village. There isn't much to do, but beating the castle does return you to it.

I think IVAN has a town you can visit instead of going right down into the dungeon.

I forget what's in the town, I think you can stand in the way of banana harvesters and steal bananas?

Crowd of peasants gather to cheer you. You cast firestorm...

I do like towns in RPGs. It's nice to have a place where everything isn't trying to kill you. I like that you propose it as an area outside the main game though.

In the New Attnam, you can kill the governor and bring a Revolution. However, I'm not actually sure what all the slaves will do.

In the Attnam, you can try to kill the High Priest Petrus and become the new high priest, but I tried it only once - he is pretty tough for such an old man. :D

It's been a long time since I played Angband but I seem to remember that I got killed pretty regularly by the townspeople - particularly when at low level, and I was always at low level in Angband.

Right let's give a town full of people to the maniac that just walked into a dungeon to kill and eat most if not all things that were killable and/or edible in it.
Surely that'll work out just dandy.

Re: proposal: make a town outside the dungeon

I just have this image of this dirty disheveled half-mad extremely powerful and dangerous adventurer who has just spent weeks underground eating whatever they could find and kill, with no-one to socialize with (other than an occasional voice in their head and some other madmen) emerging from a dank hole in the ground (where everything inside was trying to kill them) carrying a globe and talking about how it's an all-powerful artifact.

Yeah, I'm sure the townspeople probably would welcome the dirty, gibbering, well-armed, violent, paranoid, obsessed, crazy man with open arms.

Re: proposal: make a town outside the dungeon

We should also consider that the type of person/merfolk/etc. who would be willing to go into Crawl's dungeon with very few supplies is probably not very well adjusted nor socially and financially secure in the first place.

"Adventurer" is a euphemism. Basically I think of the person who enters the dungeon as 1.) an extremely unhappy petty thief/apprentice/student runaway fleeing from some crime/abuse/etc. situation; or 2.) a deserter who signed up in a militia to get some basic gear then fled; or 3.) literally a fool (in case of wanderer that's "canon"). In any case your protagonist is extremely desperate and more than a little unhinged. Even before you committed unspeakable acts and worshiped false idols in a foolish quest for a fairy tale object, it is doubtful that any self-respecting townsfolk would want anything to do with you. That's *why* you are going on this insane, desperate quest for glory in the first place! Either you are completely delusional, or you have no other options. Or both.

The town should be full of townsfolk that swarm around you and occasionally attack or steal your items. You can grind for trivial amounts of gold by killing them as they spawn. There should also be guaranteed shops of every type that will buy floor trash.

This sounds pretty much identical to Angband.

Instead, how about a town full of townsfolk who don't know you and ignore you. They lead independent lives and are unconcerned by yours. There are shops that sell floor trash. A feeling of anomie is pervasive.
