CiP: MiBe needs some advice

After a rocky start, things started going smoothly for this MiBe. I am about to head into the Vault and I am starting to train Traps and Doors. After that I figure Dodging and Evocation for my rods is in order.

I'm just trying for my first win, not going to be going into the extended game. I have a few questions about my gear.

1. My rings. +6/+4 slaying, Ring of Evasion +6 or a Ring of Regeneration. Which combination would be best for this character?

2. I've been using all my Enchant Armour/Weapon scrolls on my Storm Dragon Armour and my Exec Axe. I'm not sure if this is the logical thing to do, and that is my only Exec axe. All my other gives have been Broad axes or War axes.

3. Are the Bracers of Archery I'm wearing doing more harm than good for me? I'm only wearing them because they are +2.

Any answers to the above questions would be appreciated, or if you notice something else let me know! Dump is below.

Re: CiP: MiBe needs some advice

I would definitely ditch the regeneration ring for the ring of slaying. Boosting the executioner's axe is fine. Flame isn't my favorite brand, but it's a damn fine axe for a three rune run. I don't know what to tell you about the bracers of archery. I don't know how negatively it effects melee.

Re: CiP: MiBe needs some advice

I wouldn't enchant the axe further (maybe one more EW1) as you will want scrolls for the inevitable antimagic executioner's axe. I wouldn't have enchanted the storm dragon armour but given that you have, might as well keep going. enchant the cloak of preservation first, though.

Slaying + evasion as default rings.

the bracers are like -1/-1 slaying in melee, and +5/+3 ranged. Probably still worth using. Speaking of +2 items, use the +2 wizard hat over the intelligence hat unless you're getting int drained.

I'd do more dungeon (to 18-20) and maybe even some or all of Swamp before entering vaults.

Re: CiP: MiBe needs some advice

Storm Dragon Armour is basically plate armour with a little less EV penalty. Generally people prefer an rF plate armour or FDA because OOF is that scary. This just means you'll have to find some other means of getting to rF++ when fighting OOF - generic rings of rF will be fine.

Re: CiP: MiBe needs some advice

Thanks for the replys. I will drop the regen ring in favor of the slaying ring.

I will save my enchant scrolls from now on, but in all of orc there was only one runed plate. I will head down and check it out. Also there is a +2 cloak of preservation for sale in Orc. Is it worth picking up for ~500 gold?

I was really hoping for a anti magic exec axe but this playthrough has been filled with hydras so I guess the fire brand is best for now.

Ive never been to swamp. Is it manageable for this Be right now? I don't know what to expect or what I might need.

Yes, but don't fight in water and don't do more than the first four levels.

Yes, cloak of preservation is great. Especially for MiBe.

Re: CiP: MiBe needs some advice

swamp is full of hydras, swamp drakes with confusing breath(clarity or rPois helps), swamp dragons, and slime creatures. And water, so planning your encounters and retreats is important.

I'd buy the +2 cloak since you still want plenty of enchant scrolls for the storm dragon armour (or plate if it's better) and maybe boots/hat depending what you find.

I'd buy +0 cloak of preservation too. And maybe even -2. It's the best cloak in the game for me unless I am with Jiyva. The only item that replaces 2 amulets.

I'd rather have an rF cloak instead of preservation. It's a luxury item - good if you can get it, but there are other things that can replace it even if you do have it.

Depends on play style I guess. I will choose rF+ over rF++ for the sake of conservation. rF+ can be on 5 armour slots/weapon/2 rings, conservation can be on cloak/amulet only. Having it on cloak means I can use a rMut/Gourmand/Faith amulet.

Re: CiP: MiBe needs some advice

I would probably choose a cloak of preservation over a cloak of rF+ because rF is relatively common and item destruction is annoying.

Cloak of preservation is the best item in the game. Yes, even over boots of running.

Re: CiP: MiBe needs some advice

Well there are situations where I would use a MR cloak over preservation because MR doesn't work like rF (and I did on some characters).
Having good EV really helps with conserving consumables though, as most destroying attacks can be dodged.

Re: CiP: MiBe needs some advice

It is somewhat a moot point at this stage because the Cloaks of Preservation (+0 and +2) that are available to me are the only cloaks with egos I have found so far. I would definitely use something more useful if I had found it. I haven't found any resistances either, only a artefact flail with rN and rPoison and a ring of protection from cold.

There have been 3-4 fire drakes or dragons that I've killed so far, but none of them were kind enough to leave a hide behind when I butchered them. I am guessing I will have to hunt some resistances down eventually. Maybe Elf after Swamp and Vaults? Abusing Trog's hand to keep me from being Abyssed, but that won't be for a while yet.

For my progression I guess Swamp 1-4 -> D:20 -> Vault 7? Won't have a chance to play until later on tonight, just making plans and figuring things out.

Fire Drakes never leave hides, they are not dragons.

Elf is after D:27. Swamp isn't necessary until D:27, but a flaming axe MiBe with rPois (or Clarity or flight or several !curing) won't have as much problems.

I'd do
D:20 -> Spider:4 -> Vault:Crypt -> Crypt:5 -> Vault:7

Personally I don't feel like Swamp 1-4 are worth bothering with and just end up diving down to Swamp 5 for the rune once I'm ready for Zot, but ymmv.

I got an unID-ed +1 cloak of preservation on D:6 recently for 23 gold. I can't remember another purchase that gave me that much bang for my buck.
