DECJ lvl 22. Standing by Mennas!!! Can I escape?

My last CJ died in Orc:4 because it was a glass cannon with no defense. This time I found a book of the warp on lvl 2. Below is my character dump, please advise me on what to max next, et. cetera. I just cleared lair to 8 and Orc to 4. I want to do the sub dungeons in lair next, is that a bad idea? I also found the entrance to hell on Lair:8, is that something I should go in? Thanks.

Already have an Archmagi robe? Nice.

Anyway, you wasted skill points on stealth, IMO. These kinds of casters are so noisy, that stealth really isn't worth anything. It's good that you've gotten CBlink castable so soon, but you should try to learn a level 6 conjuration when you can. Bolt of Fire, Bolt o Ice, Iron Shot, Poison Arrow, etc. Once you learn one of those, it will carry you pretty far and you can focus on that particular school of magic.

As for where you should go, it wouldn't be a bad idea to go into Spider's Nest or Shoals, but keep in mind that you shouldn't go all the way down. You should leave the 5th floor of each of those branches for waaaaayyy later in the game. I would advise you go down a bit in the main dungeon before you head into those branches at all though. Maybe clear down to D:15-16 or something. Hopefully you'll find a book there that can give you a level 6 spell.

IMO a terrible idea to explore Shoals and Spider's early levels, which are terrifying through hindered movement/ranged monsters and confusion/very fast monsters/nets respectively, before doing D to Vaults. Shoals and Snake I could understand for this type of character, but Spider and Shoals are just really bad. Vaults are kind of dangerous these days too, but it's hard to argue that D:12 is harder than the Lair branches. I guess you could do Shoals 1-4 quite safely after D to Vaults, though I would still probably go for early Vaults -> Crypt, personally.
With regard to Hell: if you enjoy losing all your HP in two hits from a reaper while being unable to move because you're being swarmed by dozens of hell beasts which trample you off stairs and by the way are also capable of threeshotting you, while being smitten by Balrugs and fighting a 300 HP demon, knock yourself out.

I don't understand this compulsion among new players to always rush into every branch they see. Lair is the only branch you 'need' to go into as soon as you see. Every other branch can be ignored until you're at D:20, then you can continue ignoring them all after doing a bit of Vaults and hitting Crypt. Once you've seen D:27 you can then grab the 3 runes. Doing Orc:1~3 right after Lair is acceptable though it'll only be for gold and some equipment (not relevant for this character). While Vaults has more 'powerful' enemies at face value, all the Lair sub-branches excluding Snake have terrain that give you headaches, making the 'weaker' (some of them aren't) monsters there a bigger threat.

I think the general compulsion to do everything as soon as it is revealed to you is because that's how many games function (particularly non-roguelikes) and so that impression can just carry over.

OK, so I get to lvl 18, walk into view of "an orange crystal statue," it confuses me and I sit there in a confused state while some blink frogs and an ogre kill me. I took off my amulet of the gourmand and put on my amulet of clarity, but it either didn't kick in in time, or doesn't help in this situation. Is this simply one of those BS moments where you are destined to fail, or did I do something wrong?

This is the furthest I have ever gotten a character. Any advice for next time will help, I am quite heartbroken right now....

Potions of curing will cure confusion. Amulets of clarity will not.

Amulets of clarity _prevent_ confusion, but you need to quaff curing to get rid of the already-exiting confusion.

Well, I think every new player will die at least once at last floor of Lair sub-branches unless they use spoilers. The best way to avoid it would be moving those branches to D20-27.

You'll get over it. If you can do it once, you can do it again much easier next time because you have familiarity now. You're going to be heartbroken another 5 or so times before you win, it's part of the learning experience.

Your right, I started again last night and am getting close to where I was when I died. I finished Lair and went to bed. Either I am getting better or the new Conjurer is way better because I have literally only played three conjurer chars since I installed v .12. One died Orc:4 as a glass cannon with no way to evade. The second one died confused by a statue while getting pummeled by blink frogs and an ogre because I didn't know I could cure confusion, and the third one I am currently playing.

Does anyone think the conjurer is overpowered? Not that I have alot of experience playing anything else. It seems like once I get get dazzling spray online then I am not in much danger of dying for a long time. The little time bomb spell is awesome too. I kind of thought it was useless at first, but now that I have thought up some strategies for it it is a vital part of my arsenal.

It is a strong and fun start, but that doesn't translate to overpowered. There is also little meaning to 'overpowered' in crawl either as different starting kits are intentionally easier than others.

Yeah, I think new Cj is extremely strong - which isn't necessarily a bad thing, because that way new players have an easy route to successful spellcasting characters - IMB in a starting book was something I never expected to happen, and the battlesphere, last time I tried it, was absolutely crazy as a L4 spell. It felt much better than any other of the L4 conjurations, except maybe Sticky Flame (probably it's actually better than even Sticky Flame). Plus, unlike FE, you don't have a problem with monsters that resist fire.

Here is my 3rd attempt at a DECJ. Quick question I have is about my cloak. Does the -3 damage affect spells or just physical attacks? Thanks. Any advice is welcome. I didn't add any to stealth this run because your right, I am always in a noisy battle.

I will just keep using this thread instead of making a new one. Below is my current situation. I have a few questions about defense.

As you can see I just found a mace with rF++ and rC+, combined with another item gives me rF+++ and rC+++. Is that the max defense I can get, or if I get additional items of resistance will it continue to stack? Also, would you advise carrying the mace around for the higher defense, or keep using my staff of conjouring for a bit more offensive firepower?

I have my mottled dragon armor to +4, so I am assuming its total +10 AC now. What does that mean exactly, every time someone attacks me does it drop 10 dmg off the attack, or is it simply put into some formula?

Is there a resist lightning, or is that included in MR, or not at all?

Also, someone told me to go Vaults, and then Crypt. I am in crypt now, how far down do I go, and what from there?

rF and rC both have a maximum of 3 levels. I'd stick with the staff to boost your spells.

Lighting is mitigated by rElec, as you would expect.

10 AC essentially means that when you take damage, the game picks a random number between 0 and 10 and reduces the damage by that much.

The bottom level of Crypt might be harder than the rest, so if you have trouble with it, feel free to retreat. Do all but the last level of Vaults, then finish off the main Dungeon (down to 27). Then start acquiring runes.

I changed the title to reflect my current situation. I went down the stairway after turning on deflect missile and phase shift, which is my standard MO when going down to new levels. Mennas was right by me, I went back up, tried to use a tele scroll, ended up moving a couple spaces from the stairs instead, so I quit the game and went to bed. Didn't want to do anything else stupid as I figure every move is precious at this point. I sure hope I can survive this as this is by far the furthest I have ever gotten in this game and I am really liking Fire Storm.

A couple options I possibly have, but don't want to experiment with them before getting some feedback because I fear that the wrong move will simply get me killed.

Can I put on my tele ring and evoke teleportation under silence? I bumped up my evocations a bit and I think the failure rate is down to about 35%. If that works I am guessing it would take about 5 to 7 turns before I could tele.

I have a potion of speed, can I drink that and run for the escape hatch going up about 10 squares away? I also have a potion of invisibility, will that make any difference?

Use code tags, not quote tags.

The speed potion will let you move exactly as fast as Mennas. Drink it then run until silence runs out and immediately blink. Then leave the floor. It won't be long before he silences again.

You can also use your tele ring.

Usually Mennas wouldn't be a major threat to this character, just having him right next to you is bad. Firestorm cuts right through his EV and SH. Haste will make you as fast as Mennas, so if you don't want to teleport you can just quaff that potion and start walking away, blink to get some distance from Mennas when you can, and then just kill him.

As long as you use the above advice, you should be fine. Then you can laugh at how easily he dies to Fire Storm.

Although, if you do escape him, you should probably just leave the floor for a while, tempting as it might be to nuke him. >_>

Thanks for the help, I definitely feel like a noob, but its better than dying.

I didn't know his silence was a spell that would go away eventually, I thought it was a permanent aura or something. Silence pretty much shuts down anything I can do as a mage.

I wasn't sure if I could use my ring while silenced, so I didn't know if I had any escape options at all.

In the end I ended up drinking a speed potion, then i used my blink scroll, and then destroyed him ridiculously easy with Fire Storm. I think I used 3 fire storms, but it might have been only two.

In then end though, I think I did the right thing to wait and assess the situation and get some help. I don't want to have another dumb death to something like confusion when there is an easy solution.

It will probably be alot easier for me the next time through, the biggest obstacle I deal with so far is everything is unknown to me, and I can see that all of the stuff that I have passed through now isn't that big of deal to me because I think I have a plan to deal with it.

This is why you don't need to be so heartbroken over "this was my best character ever" YASDs - your next one to reach that point won't be that far down the line as you know what you're doing now. They are certainly the most remembered characters though, yes.

I remember when I first met Mennas, with a spellcasting-focused character. I too once thought his silence aura was a permanent thing. :) There's no shame in asking for advice, I think you handled it very well.

I managed to get to lvl 27 of the dungeon, then I went to vaults:5. I was stair stepping with the enemy for quite awhile until a tentacled monstrosity showed up. It wouldn't let me go up the stairs and I got pummelled by a room full of baddies.

I feel pretty good though, in less than half an hour I am lvl 11 again, and have a good idea of what I need to do.

I probably should have walked away from Crypt 5 for a bit, or else used my C. Blink to get away from the stair well (all three stairs were in the same place.) The problem I have with blinking away from the staircase is it real easy to run out of mana. I probably could have lured them away though and then tele back to stairs and been safe.

You barely miss the shadow dragon. The ironbrand convoker misses you. You block the fire giant's attack.

It looks like I also got loose with my keyboard control in the heat of battle as I was supposed to be doing a c.blink away, and it looks like I wasted my last turn doing a physical attack.

For the sake of vault 5 I would learn control teleport (or use ring of teleport control, which is better but not found that easily). With magic mapping scroll I would teleport into the very corner of the vault, approaching staircase from there.

Trying to simply escape constriction on such a squishy, low STR character is suicidal. You should probably have tried blinking away from the stairs ASAP with a random blink, then back to them with cblink when the monstrosity would be far from them, or just keep going towards one of the edges of V:5, although with the new mobs that mark you, that could be worse, I suppose. Hm, I'm not sure how brutal newnewvaults is to casters...

V:5 is always like that: surprise party at the bottom, all stairs together, quadrants full of bad dudes. There are a bunch of strategies for dealing with the ambush, but you need to keep in mind that down there vault guards are the least of your problems. Making a lot of noise near the stairs is often not a good idea. V:5 is one of the hardest levels, there's no shame in dying there. It's also really fun.

You also learned to stay away from tentacled monstrosities with squishy chars.

I find that with almost all characters I'd rather (random) teleport or blink than stairdance. So much stuff will get to hit you when you return to Vaults:5.

Even better than random teleport is to just run to one of the outside corridors. It's like teleport but you know where it's going.

The whole game can be spent preparing for V:5's ambush party: e.g. Torment scrolls and Immolation scrolls on a Ds who healed by killing things and had rF+++ (note: this attracts badasses from the quadrants, you still have to run away). It's inevitable that some noise will be made on entry (vault guards shout) but don't make a bigger racket than shouts. Magic mapping and cTele into the outside corridors (or just run there after breaching the surround, e.g. with a fear scroll) where there are few dangerous monsters.
